Abstract

Antifeeding activity of soursop leaf extract (Annona muricata L.) and its effect on nutrition indices and the microscopic structure of peritrophic membrane of the fifth-instar larvae of Spodoptera litura F. were studied. Antifeeding test was conducted by choice method. Discs of caisin leaf were dipped into the ether fraction of soursop leaf extract with concentrations of 0; 0.63; 2.50; and 10.00%. Nutrition indices and peritrophic membrane structure were observed by giving fifth-instar larvae one of the five diets, every group of diet was added to various concentrations of the ether fraction of soursop leaf extract, containing either 0; 0.63; 1.25; 2.50; and 5.00%. The result showed that soursop leaf extract had antifeeding activity at tested concentration 2.50%. Relative consumption rate (RCR), relative growth rate (RGR), and efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) were significantly lower in the case of treated larvae than that of the controls. However the efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), approximate digestibility (AD), and peritrophic membrane structure treated with soursop leaf extract were not significantly affected as compared to those in controls.

Abstract

Effectiveness of Pseudomonas fluorescens against groundnut bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum). The experiment was conducted to study effectiveness of Pseudomonas fluorescens (PF) soil drenching application against groundnut bacterial wilt disease (Ralstonia solanacearum) suppression. Results showed that PF applications gave significant effect to reduce wilt incidence. The lowest wilt incidence (7.17%) was obtained by three times periodically soil drenching of the growing plant (1 day before planting, 15 days after planting and 30 days after planting) with PF (107 cfu/ml) suspensions. PF applications showed no significant effect on plant height which ranging from 13,07 cm - 15,60 cm. In addition, PF applications showed wet root and pod weight ranging from 0,35 g – 0,83 g and 7,13 g – 9,13 g, respectively which significantly different compared with untreated PF application.

Abstract

Effect of trap design and sex pheromone on the capture of male Spodoptera exigua. This research was to know the effectiveness of two traps and three kinds of pheromone in attracting and catching the male insects of Spodoptera exigua Hubner in shallot field. Two traps were wing trap and bottle trap, whereas pheromones were standard [Z9E12-14Ac + Z9-14OH (10:1)), Ugratas® and virgin females. Traps that were loaded with a kind of pheromone, were placed randomly in shallot field, about 7 meters apart. The numbers of male insects that attracted and caught were recorded in three days for 12 days. The result showed that more male insects were caught in bottle traps than wing traps, and more males attracted in Ugratas than other pheromones.

Abstract

Identification of surfactin in Pseudomonas fluorescens ST1 which effectively suppres soybean bacterial pustule. Identification of surfactin in Pseudomonas fluorescens ST1 filtrate was conducted in Plant Pest and Disease Laboratory, Bogor Agriculture University. The 48 hours cultured suspension of P. fluorescens ST1 with 108 CFU/ml density was centrifuged to obtain the supernatant. The supernatant was analyzed for its surfactin content by High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Colum ODS-5 and eluen acetonitril and acetat acid. The result showed that surfactin was producted by P. fluorescens ST1 and this bioactive substance could suppres the bacterial pustule on soybean.

Abstract

The population density of Aphis sp., their predators, competitors, and symbionts in longbean field treated with insecticide. This study was aimed to determine the effect of profenofos insecticide application on 1) the population density of Aphis sp., their predators (coccinellids and syrphids), competitor (Empoasca sp.) and symbionts (ants), and 2) the interactions between the aphid and the predator, the aphid and the symbiont, and the aphid and the competitor in the longbean field. The experiment was arranged in completely randomized design with three levels of profenofos treatments (P1= profenofos sprayed weekly, P2= profenofos sprayed biweekly, and K= unsprayed). Each treatment was replicated six times. Population density (insect number/longbean hill) was observed three times a week, totaling 16 observations during the growing season. The result showed that profenofos spray decreased the population density of Aphis sp. Profenofos treatment also suppressed coccinellid, syrphid, Empoasca sp., and ant population. However, the insecticide did not affect the correlation either between Aphis sp. and ant, between Aphis sp. and Empoasca sp., between ant and Empoasca sp., between ant and coccinellids/syrphids, or between Empoasca sp. and coccinellids/syrphids. It was clear from this study that profenofos strengthened the interaction between Aphis sp. and coccinellids. Aphis sp.—syrphid interaction was weekened by biweekly spray of profenofos, but was replenished by weekly spray of the insecticide.

Abstract

The research was aimed to investigate: (1) distribution and population of Chromolaena odorata (siam weed) in different land-uses (paddy field, untreated land, houseyard, roadside and river/irigation side) in Bandar Lampung, South Lampung, Tanggamus, and East Lampung; (2) effect of C. odorata extract on in-vitro growth of Phytophthora palmivora, (3) effect of C. odorata extract on development of fruit rot symptom caused by P. palmivora on cocoa pod in the laboratory and in the field. Collecting of P. palmivora isolates and recording distribution and population of C. odorata were conducted in several locations known as endemic areas of cocoa pod rot disease. The effect of C. odorata extract on the growth of P. palmivora on agar media and cocoa pods was determine in the Laboratory of Plant Disease, Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung. Field experiment was performed in a cocoa plantation in Kemiling, Bandar Lampung. The results showed that C. odorata weed can be found in all of the land-uses surveyed, but the highest population was found in the untreated land-use. The tips (young leaves and stems) extract of C. odorata showed a greater inhibition effect on the growth of P. palmivora compared to the root extract. The tips extract showed the best inhibition in-vitro growth of P. palmivora at 40% concentration level, inhibited symptom development on cocoa pods in the laboratory at 50% concentration level, and on cocoa pods in the field at 60% concentration level.

Abstract

Diversity and phylogeny of fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) in South Kalimantan based on morphology and molecular (RAPD-PCR and DNA sequencing). Seven species of fruit fly was known by morphological identification. The fruit flies were found from  trapping with methyl eugenol and fruit collecting at all study sites in South Kalimantan. The results showed that as much as 17  plants were infected by fruit fly. Dendrogram based on morphological identification analyzed by using UPGMA with MEGA 4 program consisted in a group consisting of 5 sub-groups. Bactrocera carambolae and Bactrocera papayae of morphology were still a closely related fruit fly at 0.935. Whereas, based on RAPD result analized by UPGMA using 20 character of DNA based, showed that out of seven species consisted 2 groups, 1st group were B. umbrosa,  B. occipitalis and sub-group of B. latifrons. The second group consists of sub-groups B.carambolae, B. papaya, sub-group B. albistrigata and B. cucurbitae. The results of dendrogram from sequencing DNA fruit fly analysis comprised one of group and three sub-groups. The first sub-groups were B. papayae, B. carambolae, B. occipitalis, B.latifrons. The second subgroup were B. cucurbitae and B. umbrosa. While B. albistrigata separate but still one group with another fruit flies. The results of DNA sequencing showed that there were a homology of the seven species of the fruit fly i.e at 83 base pair / bp (C), 101 bp (T), 265 bp (G), 420 bp (A), 432 bp (T), 600 bp (A ). The length of the base pair for B. occipitalis, B. cucurbitae, B. albistrigata, B. carambolae, B. papayae, B. latifrons were respectively 615, 898, 570.969, 898 and 615 bp. The results of morphological analysis and RAPD methods showed difference in the distribution of groups and sub-groups. But based on morphologycal and DNA identification seven species of fruit flies found were all same as the genebank.

Abstract

The study of host range and population dynamic of B. tabaci in red chili pepper fiel dswas conducted in Sub-district of Pakem, District of Sleman, Province of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta during dry season of May-October 2009. The study of host plants of B. tabaci from the red chili pepper fields revealed that there were 27 species of host plants belong to 22 genera of 13 families including crops and weeds. The host plants belong to families of Araceae, Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Capparidaceae, Convolvulaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lamiaceae, Oxalidaceae, Papilionaceae, Rubiaceae, Solanaceae and Sterculiaceae. The host plant families of Asteraceae and Euphorbiaceae had the most abundant population of B. tabaci. Geminivirus-like symptoms were found in the weeds of A. conyzoides and A. boehmerioides. Population of B. tabaci adults correlated with abundance of host plant species found in the red chili pepper fields. The population of B. tabaci in red chili pepper fields was affected by natural enemy population. Population dynamic of the parasitoid Eretmocerus sp. correlated with population dynamic of the parasitized nymph of B. tabaci. Parasitoid Eretmocerus sp. was potentially good in controlling population of B. tabaci nymph in red chili pepper fields.

Abstract

Diversity of parasitoid and predator arthropod in oil palm and paddy field at Cindali, Bogor Regency. Biodiversity can be defined as the diversity of living things in various places to the riches on earth. Insects as one of the components of biodiversity have an important role in the food web as herbivores, carnivores (parasitoids and predators), and detritivores. The research aimed to study the diversity of parasitoids and predators at two sampling locations. Sampling was carried out at the oil palm plantation PTPN VIII Cindali, Ranca Bungur, Bogor and at the paddy fields that adjacent to the plantation. This research was conducted in December 2014 until July 2015. This research takes 3 plots in oil palm plantations and 3 plots in paddy field. Each plot consists of 5 subplots, one of each was 18 x 18 m. Sampling was carried out following the paddy age, since 2 week after plantation until paddy harvested and repeated every 2 weeks. This research use three methods, i.e. insect nets, pitfall trap and yellow pan trap. The results showed that the diversity of parasitoids and predators on both planting locations was high. In the oil palm plantations the total number of insect parasitoids and predators was 184 morphospecies from 10 orders and 57 families, while in the paddy fields was 183 morphospecies from 10 orders and 60 families. Telenomus podisi parasitoids and predators Anoplolepis gracilipes is morphospecies with the highest abundance.

Abstract

ABSTRACTAbundance and Species Diversity of Predatory Spiders for Insect Pests Inhabiting Ratoon Paddy in Tidal Lowland. Ratoon paddy productivity is lower than the main crop. Increasing productivity of the ratoon paddy is to protect the paddy from pests and diseases. This study aimed to analyze the abundance and species diversity of predatory spiders of rice pests on ratoon paddy in tidal lowland. Ratoon paddy field observed was from the main crop that has been harvested and cut 20 cm height. Paddy area observed was 2 ha field planted using Ciherang and Inpara varieties. Spiders inhabiting canopy were sampled using insect nets but soil dwelling spiders were trapped using pitfall traps. The result showed that spider species inhabiting canopy of ratoon paddy were Pardosa pseudoannulata, Lycosa chaperi, Araneus inustus, Cylosa insulana, Atypena adelinae, Erigone bifurca, Erigonidium graminicola, Oxyopes javanus, Argyrodes miniaceus, and Marpisa magister. Spider species found soil dwelling were 11 species, namely Pardosa pseudoannulata, Pardosa sumatrana, Pardosa mackenziei, Pardosa oakleyi, Hogna rizali, Araneus inustus, Cylosa insulana, T. vermiformis, Runcinia albostriata, Coleosoma octomaculatum, and Marpisa magister. Abundance, species number, species diversity for soil dwelling spiders were higher than those for canopy inhabiting spiders. However, the abundance, species number, species diversity for the soil dwelling spiders tended to be higher on the ratoon paddy 3, 4, and 5 week old than those on 1, 2, and 6 week old. From the result, we concluded that abundance, species number, species diversity of spiders found in the ratoon paddy were higher or tended similar to those on the main crop.
