Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry
Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry or known as PJD, is an English-language scientific periodicals published by the Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran thrice a year on every March, July and November. The submission process of manuscript is open throughout the year. All submitted manuscripts will go through the double-blind peer review and editorial review before being granted with acceptance for publication. Designed as a medium of information and scientific knowledge, Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry publishes numerous research articles, in the area of Oral Biology, Dental Material Science and Technology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pedodontics, Dental Public Health and Community Dentistry, Conservative Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Medicine, Dental Radiology, as well as with their development through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. Initially published as Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry (PJD) magazine ISSN 1979-0201(print) on 2007 in form of printed issues. In 2017, the magazine had its online published version under the same with ISSN 2549-6212 (online) in accordance with the policy of LIPI. Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry has been using Open Journal System requiring all writers to register in advance before they are allowed to upload the manuscript they write online. Afterwards, the editors, peer reviewers, and writers can monitor the manuscript processing. Several other changes are informed in the Journal History.

This research is aimed at observing whether there are differences in the measurement results between dental arch length and arch length measured manually and by using computer software, i.e. Corel Draw 12, in study model cast as well as the measurement speed in both techniques. The method used in this research is the descriptive comparative method. The measurement is performed to 52 study model cast samples with the Spee Curve depth of < 1.5 mm, between 1.5 and 3 mm, > 3 mm. The measurements are performed using 2 techniques: a manual technique using a calliper and by using Corel Draw 12, a computer program with a computer scanner. The t-test statistic is used to reveal whether there are differences in the measurement results between the two techniques and which method needs shorter time. Statistically, there are significant differences either in the speed of the measurement or the results of the measurement using both techniques where t-calculated > t table. The deeper the Spee curve, the more different the results from the manual technique and computed technique. The differences are in the range of 0.32 to 0.52 mm for dental arch length and 0.33 to 0.43 mm for arch length. These differences are still acceptable clinically. By referring to the results of this research, it is expected that computer usage can be increased and become an alternative against manual technique of measurement.

Denture consists of acrylic artificial teeth and acrylic prothesis base bond chemically with a bond strength of 315 kgF/cm2. Most of the commercial acrylic artificial teeth do not specify their specifications and all of those acrylic artificial teeth do not include mechanical data (bond strength). The aim of this study is to discover which acrylic artificial teeth meet ADA specification no. 15. This study is a descriptive analytic study performed to 5 acrylic artificial teeth posterior brands commonly used by dentists and technicians. From each brand, 3 sample teeth were taken. The acrylic artificial teeth were prepared into a rectangular shape and were attached between acrylic prothesis base simulation and jigs. The sample was given tensile load using a Universal Testing Machine. The amount of force that causes the teeth to be fractured was recorded and the bond strength was calculated. The results of the study show that the average value for the five acrylic artificial teeth for the five brands were as followed: Brand A, 125.993 kgF/cm2; B, 188.457 kgF/cm2; C, 175.880 kgF/cm2; D, 153.373 kgF/cm2; E, 82.839 kgF/cm2. The data can be tested statistically by using One Way ANOVA test and Dunnett test (alpha = 0.05). From the study, it is concluded that the five acrylic artificial teeth have a bond strength below the ADA specification no. 15.

Periodontal disease has very complex and multi factor etiology. Plaque bacteria is the main cause of periodontal disease and another risk factor that also plays a role is a smoking habit. Cigarette product such as nicotine can influence the development of periodontal disease that can directly and systemically damage the function of PMN cell. The research was conducted by taking a clinical examination on the smoking influence that covers the number of cigarettes and the period of smoking, and kind of cigarette to the worse of periodontal disease, and by measuring the epithelial attachment loss and the bleeding index. The research was conducted to 152 male aged 20-45 years old, comprised 80 smokers and 72 nonsmokers at the Clinic of Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta. The result of the research showed that smoking gave influence on the worse of the periodontal disease. There was a profound relationship between the smoking period and the number of cigarettes consumed everyday indicated by the epithelial attachment loss. Smoking did not enhance gingival bleeding. The relationship between kinds of cigarette and the gingival bleeding score and the epithelial attachment loss did not show a significant bleeding.

Polimerizatian is the critical stage to determine the quality of composites resin, this involves isolated monomer carbon double bonds being converted to an extended network of single bonds. Physical and mechanical properties of composites are influenced by the level of conversion attained during polymerization. An adequate light intensity and light curing time are important to obtain the degree of polymerization. The objective of this study is to evaluate the difference of the hardness nanocomposites which activated by LED LCU based on the variation of curing times. This study is a true experimental research. The samples were made from nanocomposites material with cylinder form of 4 mm in depth, 6 mm in diameter. This samples divided into 3 groups of curing times. Group, I was cured for 20s curing time as a control due to manufactory recommended; Group II was cured for 30s, and Group III was cured for 40s and the hardness (Rebound hardness tester) was determined using Rebound scale (RS) and converted by Mohs scale (MS). There was a very significant level of hardness rate from each group using ANOVA test. The result of the study concludes that there were the differences on the nanocomposites hardness level cured under different curing times 20, 30 and 40 sec. The longer of curing times, the higher level of hardness.

Entamoeba gingivalis is protozoa (non-pathogen amoeba) that lives in the oral cavity and act as opportunistic parasite. The parasite is most common found within oral cavity with advance periodontal disease. This study aimed to find the existence Entamoeba gingivalis within oral cavity with mild oral hygiene. The study was conducted by making preparation of plaque taken from patients oral cavity with mild oral hygiene. The degree of oral hygiene was determined by using Silness and Loe Index and Ramfjord Periodontal Index. The number of Entamoeba gingivalis was gained by counting them from the preparation examined under microscope. The result demonstrates that mild oral hygiene has a high percentage of Entamoeba gingivalis is that 80 % either for various plaque index or ages.

Hematologic abnormalities are common in HIV-infected patient, particularly in individuals with more advanced HIV disease. Hematologic abnormalities and their association with HIV-associated oral lesions had been reported. Intravenous drug use has been associated with increased oral lesions too. We reported a case of oral lesions in a 24 years old man HIV-infected intravenous drug users. Poor hematologic status is a risk factor of Oral Candidiasis in HIV-infected person with clinical features appear generally. But the clinical feature of Herpes Labialis is not usually because of his poor hematologic status. Itâs concluded that poor hematologic status and transmission of HIV through contaminated needlestick are the high-risk factors of oral lesions and appear not usually clinical features in ODHA. Correction of these hematologic abnormalities and appropriately management of oral lesions can minimize the severity and increase the better quality of life patient.

The aim of this study was to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the combination of Quaternary ammonium compound with Ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA) towards hand isolated Staphylococcus epidermidis for preventing the cross infection. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration was determined based on a serial dilution method in 1/1000, 1/2000, 1/4000, 1/8000, 1/16000, 1/32000, 1/64000, 1/128000 concentration with two repetitions. The result showed that the 1/4000 concentration of the combination of Quaternary ammonium compound with Ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid was the MIC. In conclusion, the combination of Quaternary ammonium compound with Ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid had an antibacterial effect towards Staphylococcus epidermidis with the MIC in 1/4000 concentration.

The relation between pregnancy and periodontal inflammation has been recognized for many years, therefore, it is important to maintain and promote oral health during pregnancy. The aim of this research is to evaluate dentists knowledge in oral hygiene instructions in preventing gingivitis in the pregnant women. The research has conducted a survey of 40 general dentists in West Bandung District. The survey was done by distributing forms of the questionnaire sent by mail or by telephone interview, and by asking the dentists about their knowledge in oral hygiene instructions regarding the dental care for pregnant women. All of the respondents agreed that oral health during pregnancy was important and therefore it was important to give the Oral Hygiene Instructions (OHI) to the pregnant patients. Two-thirds of dentists (63.8%) agreed that to do scaling was safe, 36.2% of the respondents doubted if Chlorhexidine mouthwash was safe for the use in pregnant women. Almost half of the dentists (57.4%) were doubtful that there was a relationship between periodontitis and preterm birth or low weight birth rate. Dentists as one of the providers of prenatal health care already realized how important it is to keep oral health during pregnancy; however, they doubted if there was a relationship between periodontitis, pre-term birth and low weight birth rate and the safety of using chlorhexidine as an antimicrobial agent during the pregnancy. Providing up to date information and continuing education for dentists knowledge in order to prevent gingivitis during pregnancy.

Introduction: Dental and oral health can affect the quality of life as it relates to the general health condition. Dental and oral health problem that mostly found is dental caries. Dental caries mostly occurs in children in the mixed dentition stage. The mixed dentition stage occurs in elementary school-aged children, mark with malocclusions and tooth decays, that allows food retention as main cause of dental caries. The purpose of this study was to see the description of dental caries on mixed dentition stage of elementary school students in Cibeber Community Health Center. Methods: This research was a descriptive research with cross-sectional approach. The population in this study was elementary school students in Cibeber Community Health Center. The sampling method used was purposive sampling method. The caries profile was measured by deft index for deciduous teeth and DMFT index for permanent teeth were presented in tabular and diagrams. Results: The results of the study towards 272 elementary school students showed that the average value of deft index was 3.99 and DMFT index value was 1.26. This result can be caused since the location of the population was located in urban areas, with easy access to dental and oral health services and good tendencies towards the awareness of dental and oral health care. Conclusion: Dental caries of elementary school students in Cibeber Community Health Center based on (World Health Organization) guidelines by deft index was category as moderate and by DMFT index was classified low category.
Altered immunoexpression of e-cadherin and C-erbB2 in salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma: Correlation with the degree of histopathological malignancy

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) is a type of malignancy found in salivary gland, but its neoplasm prognosis is hard to predict. It grows slowly but spread continuously to its surrounding tissues and metastasizes hematogenously with a very high level of relapse. Histological, ACC of salivary gland is a combination of three types of growth phases (tubular, cribiform and solid), the solid type is > 30%, represented the worst prognosis. C-erbB2 proto-oncogene assumed as a prognosis symptom of salivary gland carcinoma, whilst the result of C-erbB2 expression in ACC salivary gland of was remained to be controversial. E-cadherin immunoexpression in ACC of breast gland used as the symptom of malignancy. Some experiments found that C- erbB2 oncogene product can be inducted the decrease of E-cadherin gene expression. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to find out the alteration of E-cadherin adhesion protein immunoexpression and C-erbB2 proto-oncogene in salivary gland ACC, in its correlation with the degree of its histopathological malignancy. The research design was a cross-sectional study at 51 block of paraffin which produced retrospectively by the patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of salivary gland. All the samples of tumors were re-diagnosed to get the data of histopathological malignancy degree (as a modification of Szantos and Batsakis methods) with the smear of HE. Afterward, they got an immunohistochemistry, toward E-cadherin and C-erbB2. The result of the research showed that E-cadherin expression has negative correlation with the increase of histopathological malignancy degree. The low or non-existing of E-cadherin in salivary gland is related to high degree of histological malignancy (p< 0.01). Whilst the changed of E-erbB2 expression had significant correlation with the degree of histopatological malignancy (p < 0.03), but itâs correlation with the increase of histopathological malignancy was insignificant (p = 0.11). In summary, E-cadherin expression could be used as an indication of tumor to predict the prognosis malignancy of adenoid cystic adenoma of salivary gland. C-erbB2âs role in salivary gland ACC related to its biological acts.
