Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry or known as PJD, is an English-language scientific periodicals published by the Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran thrice a year on every March, July and November. The submission process of manuscript is open throughout the year. All submitted manuscripts will go through the double-blind peer review and editorial review before being granted with acceptance for publication. Designed as a medium of information and scientific knowledge, Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry publishes numerous research articles, in the area of Oral Biology, Dental Material Science and Technology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pedodontics, Dental Public Health and Community Dentistry, Conservative Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Medicine, Dental Radiology, as well as with their development through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. Initially published as Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry (PJD) magazine ISSN 1979-0201(print) on 2007 in form of printed issues. In 2017, the magazine had its online published version under the same with ISSN 2549-6212 (online) in accordance with the policy of LIPI. Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry has been using Open Journal System requiring all writers to register in advance before they are allowed to upload the manuscript they write online. Afterwards, the editors, peer reviewers, and writers can monitor the manuscript processing. Several other changes are informed in the Journal History.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and the exposure time of the combination of quaternary ammonium compound with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) towards Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus so that the combination can be applied as a disinfectant against MRSA.The tested bacteria MRSA was isolated from the RSGM of the Faculty of Dentistry Padjadjaran University. This laboratory experimental study was conducted based on a serial dilution method. The combination of quaternary ammonium compound with EDTA was diluted in 1/1000, 1/2000, 1/4000, 1/8000, 1/16000, 1/32000, 1/64000, and 1/128000 concentration.The result showed that the combination of quaternary ammonium compound with EDTA inhibited the MRSA on 1/1000, 1/2000 and 1/4000 concentrations. The effective exposure time to reduce the number of MRSA colonies are 2.5 and 3 minutes with 1/1000 concentration from the combination. In conclusion that the MIC of the combination of quaternary ammonium compound with EDTA is in 1/4000 concentration and the effective exposure time is more than 3 minutes.

Abstract

The post is used to retain a core that supports the definitive restoration. One of the important factors in the prognosis of post-endodontic restoration system is the post space preparation design which effects to the distribution of stresses. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of post space preparation design at the cervical area of the root to the stress distribution on static loading using (two dimensions) finite element method. This was a numeric simulation study using two 2D digital models: seat and non-seat design of maxillary central incisors using commercial software of finite element. The procedures of pre-processing, solution, and post-processing were used to evaluate the distribution of internal stress caused by static loading 110 N which was applied at 135° angle with tooth longitudinal axis on the palatal surface of the core. Both models of restoration with cast post-core of Orden alloy were divided into 15,400 triangular elements. This study showed that the stress distribution from the loading location to the location of stress concentration and the value of maximum stress at cervical part of the root at non-seat design was lower than the seat design (seat design 3.69 times greater than non-seat). This study proved that non-seat design distributes stress better than seat design.

Abstract

Hg release from amalgam restoration is continuos as long as an amalgam in the mouth. The difference in saliva pH is one factor that influences Hg releasing from amalgam restoration. The purpose of this research was to find data the effect of the difference in saliva pH against Hg release from amalgam restoration. This research was a true experimental in vitro research. This research used 40 samples of premolar teeth of the maxilla, prepared in occlusal Class I, restored with amalgam and then divided into 4 Groups. Teeth belonging to Group 1 were immersed in saliva artificial with a pH content 5, Group 2 with a pH content of 6, Group 3 with a pH content of 7 as a control, and Group 4 with a pH content of 8. All tooth Groups were immersed for one week after condensation. Research data results analyzed using the One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Research results measured using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) indicated that Group 1 with a pH content of 5 had the highest average release, namely, 19,276 ppb, followed by Group 4 with a pH content of 8, with a Hg release of 17,691 ppb, followed by Group 3 with a pH content of 7 as a control, with a Hg release of 13,702 ppb, and Group 2 with a pH content of 6 the lowest Hg release, namely 12,377 ppb. Summary of this research showed that there was no effect of saliva pH difference against Hg release from amalgam restoration.

Abstract

The use of fixed orthodontic appliances can improve someones mastication, speech and appearance. However, this appliance acts as a strange object that may cause irritation to the mucosa epithelial of oral cavity, because of the friction and pressure from the components of the fixed orthodontic appliances which are in direct contact with the oral mucosa. Irritation in the oral mucosa could stimulate the increase of cytokeratin. The appearance of cytokeratin is then used to identify the condition of these cells. This study was a descriptive research to find the expression of cytokeratin 19 with immunohistochemical method in oral mucosa epithelial of fixed orthodontic appliances users. Sample in this study was chosen from 30 fixed orthodontic appliances users. The result of this study was determined by calculating the number of positive cells (brown), compared with total number of cells. The account of positive cells would present the reaction of the epithelial cells according to the inflamation stage which caused by the use of orthodontic appliances. As a conclusion of this study, the use of fixed orthodontic appliances may cause changes in epithelial mucosa which form an adaptation process by increasing the number of progenitor cells marked by cytokeratin 19.

Abstract

Identification of the unknown body is a medical, legal and humane responsibility of the forensic team to evaluate data relevant to the identification. The purpose of this research was to obtain necessary data to compute and analyze the Mandibular Canine Index (MCI) between Malaysian Indian males and females studying in Universitas Padjadjaran as well as to determine the Standard Mandibular Canine Index (Standard MCI) for the Malaysian Indian community. This research used a descriptive and analytical survey approach and was done though a stratified random proportional sampling technique. The result of this research established a statistical significant difference between males and females Mandibular Canine Index (MCI) with the level of confidence of 95% with the mean of males as 0.260±0.019 and females as 0.236±0.012. The Standard Mandibular Canine Index of the Malaysian Indian community was 0.248. The overall success to predict the sex using this Standard Mandibular Canine Index was 76.67%. It was concluded that Standard Mandibular Canine Index could be used for sex prediction as a supporting technique.

Abstract

The aim of an orthodontic treatment is to achieve aesthetic, dental health and the surrounding tissues, occlusal functional relationship, and stability. The success of an orthodontic treatment is influenced by many factors, such as diagnosis and treatment plan. In order to do a diagnosis and a treatment plan, medical record, clinical examination, radiographic examination, extra oral and intra oral photos, as well as study model analysis are needed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences in dental arch form between level four polynomial and pentamorphic arch form and to determine which one is best suitable for normal occlusion sample. This analytic comparative study was conducted at Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran on 13 models by comparing the dental arch form using the level four polynomial method based on mathematical calculations, the pattern of the pentamorphic arch and mandibular normal occlusion as a control. The results obtained were tested using statistical analysis T student test. The results indicate a significant difference both in the form of level four polynomial method and pentamorphic arch form when compared with mandibular normal occlusion dental arch form. Level four polynomial fits better, compare to pentamorphic arch form.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal effect, by determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of saga leave extract against Candida albicans, as a causal of oral candidiasis. The saga left was extracted following maceration method. Candida albicans, as a tested fungal was isolated from patients at the Oral and Dental Hospital Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran. They were cultured on Sabouraud Agar plate, incubated at 37°C for 18-24 hours. The isolation and the identification of Candida albicans were based on colonial morphology and the fermentation of glucose, maltose, saccharose, dan lactose at the Microbiology Laboratory. This experimental laboratory study was conducted according to a serial dilution method from 16 mg/ml up to 0,25 mg/ml of saga leave extract with two-fold dilution in three repetitions. The result showed that the Saga leaves extract to be able to inhibit Candida albicans at minimum 2 mg/ml concentration. As a conclusion, the concentration of 2 mg/ml or more of saga leave extract has antifungal effect against Candida albicans.

Abstract

The habit of smoking white cigarettes and clove cigarettes may affect the gustatory function, that is, it will cause damage to taste buds, resulting in an increase in gustatory threshold. This research used the descriptive comparative method and had the purpose of obtaining an illustration of gustatory threshold and compare gustatory threshold in white cigarette smokers and clove cigarette smokers in young, male adults. For gustatory threshold evaluation, the Murphy method was used to obtain a value for perception threshold and taste identification threshold using sucrose solution of 0.0006 M-0.06 M concentration. Research results indicate that the perception threshold and identification threshold of young, male adult smokers are 0.0119 M and 0.0292 M. Young, male adult clove cigarette smokers have a perception threshold and identification threshold of 0.0151 M and 0.0348 M. The conclusion of this research is that the perception threshold of young, male adult white cigarette smokers and clove cigarette smokers are the same, whereas the identification threshold of young, male adult white cigarette smokers and clove cigarette smokers are different, that is, the identification threshold of clove cigarette smokers is higher than that of white cigarette smokers.

Abstract

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a genetic material which is found in all living organisms. On the human cell or eukaryotes cell, the DNA is found in the nucleus cell and the mitochondria. The DNA arrangement on each cell in human body is the same, that is why, for the analysis meaning, DNA can be isolated from any cell in the body. The source of DNA to be analyzed usually coming from the blood sample by an injection method, such a way resulting in pain and bringing about constraint. Therefore, a study was carried out to look for an alternative of DNA isolation. The aim of this experimental study was to get an optimal DNA isolation method by using oral mucous smear method with a purpose to get a quick and easy DNA isolation. The investigation materials were in the form of samples which were taken from the oral epithelial mucous cells out of three different subjects. The epithelial cells were obtained by the oral mucous smear method which in a variation of two, four and six times of smear applications, respectively. The DNA was then isolated using buffer extraction method. The concentrations of DNA were measured by using ultraviolet spectrophotometer at 260 nm wavelength. The results of DNA isolation were analyzed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique. The optimal DNA isolation could be analyzed by PCR technique. The experimental results show that from three different subjects of study, DNA can be isolated optimally by oral mucous smear method with six times of smear applications.

Abstract

The one-third lower face height belongs to ideal proportion, ratio 1:1:1, of vertical face height. The one-third lower face height could be influenced by mastication. The one-third lower face height that shorter than normal ratio is generally followed by deep bite which may lead to temporomandibular disfunction even so eustachian tube disfunction, this condition may interfere mastication function, which can be measured by mastication performance. The research objective was to determine the effects of short lower face height to the mastication performance based on overbite. The research method was a cross-sectional study with epidemiology survey type. Research subjects 12-15 years old junior high school with Deutero Melayu Sub races in Bandung. Sampling technique used multistage random sampling by determining the size of the sample based on potluck sample and gained 24 children (group 1) with the normal ratio of vertical face height and 27 children with short lower facial height which were 11 children overbite normal (group 2) and 16 children deep bite (group 3). Mastication performance by 20 times chewing artificial test food then followed by sieving test. Mastication performance value represented by the median particle size (MPS) and the distribution of the particle distribution (b). The results of average MPS and b between group 1, 2 and 3 used statistical analysis MPS with ANOVA test which Fhit=5.56 and pvalue=0.0075, b which Fhit=3.41 and pvalue=0.0430 showed significant differences. Continued with group T test MPS (value = 0.0925) dan b (value = 0.2076) between group 1 and 2 showed a non significant differences. While between group 1 and 3 showed a highly significant differences in MPS (value = 0.0037 and  = 0,01) and a significant differences in b (value = 0.0141 and  = 0,05). Conclusions of this study were children with short lower face height and normal overbite did not decrease the mastication performance while children with deep bite decrease the mastication performance.
