Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry or known as PJD, is an English-language scientific periodicals published by the Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran thrice a year on every March, July and November. The submission process of manuscript is open throughout the year. All submitted manuscripts will go through the double-blind peer review and editorial review before being granted with acceptance for publication. Designed as a medium of information and scientific knowledge, Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry publishes numerous research articles, in the area of Oral Biology, Dental Material Science and Technology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pedodontics, Dental Public Health and Community Dentistry, Conservative Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Medicine, Dental Radiology, as well as with their development through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. Initially published as Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry (PJD) magazine ISSN 1979-0201(print) on 2007 in form of printed issues. In 2017, the magazine had its online published version under the same with ISSN 2549-6212 (online) in accordance with the policy of LIPI. Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry has been using Open Journal System requiring all writers to register in advance before they are allowed to upload the manuscript they write online. Afterwards, the editors, peer reviewers, and writers can monitor the manuscript processing. Several other changes are informed in the Journal History.

Abstract

Down syndrome is a common genetic disorder also known as Trisomy 21. There are special orofacial features of children with Down syndrome in contrast to normal children. The increasing occurrence of dental caries in Down syndrome children may be caused by the exposure towards cariogenic foods nowadays. This research was aimed to determine the prevalence of caries, def-t, and DMF-T index of 6-14 years old children with Down syndrome at Bandung in 2011. This study was a descriptive study with the surveying technique. The population of this research was the Down syndrome students of Special School (SLB) in Bandung City region with the age range of 6-14 years old. The Special Schools participated in this study were Muhammadiyah Special School; YPLB C-Special School; Asih Manunggal C- Special School; Terate S-Special School; Aditya Grahita BC-Special School; and YPLB Cipaganti BC-Special School. The sample of this research was 30 students. The caries prevalence, def-t, and DMF-T index of the students was measured by the examination of decayed, extracted or missing, and filled teeth. The research results showed that the prevalence of caries was 93%, while the def-t index was 3.03 and DMF-T index was 6.1. The conclusion of this research was the caries prevalence of children with Down syndrome was very high, whereas the def-t index was categorized in the moderate level, and the DMF-T index was categorized in the high level.

Abstract

Introduction: Sapphire bracket is the best aesthetic bracket with metal bracket-like mechanical properties. In conditions causing attachment lost between sapphire bracket and enamel, a rebonding procedure will needed. The shear bond strength of sapphire bracket decrease after the rebonding procedure. Sandblasting, hydrofluoric acid etching, and silanization as surface treatment are widely used to improve the bracket bond strength. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of zirconia as sandblasting material towards the shear bond strength of reconditioned sapphire bracket. Methods: This study was an experimental laboratory with as much as 27 samples of sapphire bracket divided into 3 groups. Group I was rebonded with sandblasting zirconia and silane, group II with hydrofluoric acid etching and silane, and group III with new bracket bonding. The attachment strength measurement indicator was the shear bond strength test and the SEM analysis. Results: The shear bond strength test showed the average value for each group were 12.97 MPa, 9.26 MPa, and 10.58 MPa, consecutively. The test results were then analysed using a one way ANOVA and LSD (p < 0.05), which showed that significant difference only found in the comparison between group I with group II, but not in the comparison between group I with group III. The SEM analysis result showed that sandblasted surface has homogenous microporosities in high quantities. Conclusion: Zirconia as sandblasting material was effective in increasing the shear bond strength of reconditioned sapphire bracket.

Abstract

Mouthwash is widely used by the community to maintain oral health. Beside the benefit provided, both alcohol-containing mouthwash and alcohol-free mouthwash have negative effects on the composite resin restorative materials, which can affect the surface hardness. One of composite types is hybrid type which is superior in physical and mechanical properties as a restorative material. The aim of this study was to determined the effect of alcohol-containing mouthwash and alcohol-free mouthwash towards the surface hardness of hybrid composite restorative material. This study used 15 disc-shaped specimens of hybrid composite with the size of 6 mm diameter and 4 mm thickness and divided into three treatment groups immersion, in the alcohol-containing mouthwash (A), alcohol-free mouthwash (B), and artificial saliva (C) as control for 12 hours, which surface hardness was further tested using Vickers hardness test. The mean of hardness values of group: A 24.9 VHN; B: 27.2 VHN; and C: 28.4 VHN. The results of statistical tests One-Way ANOVA showed there were significant differences in the hardness values among the three treatment groups (p<0,05). From this study concluded that both alcohol-containing mouthwash and alcohol-free mouthwash were decreasing the surface hardness of hybrid composite restorative material.

Abstract

Bleaching is the tooth whitening by applying chemical materials oxidizing the organic tooth pigmentation and creating smaller and lighter molecules. Commonly used in the tooth bleaching is hydrogen peroxide. Strawberry and apple contain hydrogen peroxide and ellagic acid which will bond with an unsaturated bond of the tooth pigmentation. The purpose of this research was to finding out and measuring the tooth whitening level and effectivity between the strawberry and apple juice. The type of this research was a true experimental (in-vitro), using 30 samples of maxillary premolars with cutted radicular until the CEJ. Samples were divided into 3 groups (immersed in strawberry juice; apple juice; and mineral water); with three times daily immersion in one week. The tooth colour level was measured using a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA and LSD test. The results showed significant differences among all groups. Normality test showed the variance between homogenous groups, with the p-value of 0.198 (p ≥ 0.05). The one-way ANOVA test results showed a significance value (0.000), indicated a significant degree of the tooth whitening level between all groups. The LSD test results showed that the tooth whitening level in group I (immersed in strawberry juice) was significantly different to group II (immersed in apple juice) and group III (immersed in mineral water), with a significance value of 0.01 and 0.00 ( p ≤ 0.05). The tooth whitening level in group II was significantly different from group III, with a significance value of 0.03 (p ≤ 0.05). There were differences in the tooth whitening level between immersion in strawberry juice, apple juice, and mineral water, with the most effective tooth whitening level found in the strawberry juice immersion.

Abstract

The normal alveolar bone crest located at a distance of 1 to 2 mm from CEJ towards the apical. If there is a bone loss, the alveolar bone crest located at 2 mm more to the apical from CEJ. The alveolar bone loss is one characteristic of aggressive periodontitis and the onset of the disease at the age of puberty. The purpose of this research was to know and to assess the height of alveolar bone crest using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in patients with aggressive periodontitis. The type of this research was descriptive. A total of 317 sample CBCT imagery from 6 aggressive periodontitis patients. The result of this research showed that average height of alveolar bone crest second premolar distal, the first molar mesial, first molar distal and second molar mesial on the first region were 3 mm, 4.2 mm, 6.1 mm, and 4.8 mm respectively. On the second region were 3.2 mm, 3.6 mm, 3.6 mm, and 3.4 mm respectively, and in the third region were 2.4 mm, 2.8 mm, 2.5 mm dan 1.4 mm consecutively. While in the fourth region were 2.9 mm, 3 mm, 2.8 mm, and 2.3 mm respectively. The average height of alveolar bone crest of aggressive periodontitis was 3.8 mm. Slicing CBCT imagery on coronal view for the anterior region and sagittal view for the posterior region, showed the characteristic of height alveolar bone crest was arch-shaped which showed the different height of alveolar bone crest of the second premolar distal until second molar mesial.

Abstract

Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the important medical pathogens which have been recognised for many years as a remedyfor a wide case of oral infections. Nowadays, the use of herbal remedy for reducing bacteria in the oral cavity has been implemented widely due to thefewer side effects. Therefore, researchershave been findingwaysto use pineapple in dentistry to prevent many cases of oral diseases. The purpose of this study was to prove that pineapple extract indifferent concentration had the potential as an antibacterial agent towards Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: The study was an experimental laboratory conducted by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration of pineapple (Ananas comosus) with thetwo-fold serial dilution methods. Results:The The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the pineapple extract was 1.56%-0.78%. Conclusion: The pineapple extract had anantibacterial effect towards Staphylococcus aureus due to the bromelain compound and its phytochemical factor such as Vitamin C and flavonoid.

Abstract

One of the most difficult cases to be managed in dentistry is an odontogenic infection. The study was aimed to finding the description of the odontogenic infection cases at the Oral Surgery Polyclinic of Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia, according to the odontogenic infection types, genders, ages, sources of infection, and type of treatment given. This study was a retrospective-descriptive study with a survey method conducted from January 2009 to December 2010. The results of this study showed that there were total 8 types of odontogenic infection cases. The periapical abscess was the most frequent abscess found in 89 patients (30.6%). Male patients were having more often cases than women with the ratio of 53:47. The most frequent age group was the 21-30 years old age group in 57 patients (22.7%). The highest number of patients from 8 different cases of odontogenic infection (30.2%). The source of odontogenic infection was found most commonly by the mandibular first molar teeth, with as much as 26.6%.

Abstract

The change of the tooth colour could be restored with bleaching. The tooth bleaching will affects the surface roughness of the composite resins. Recently, the material basis for composite resins has developed, among others are methacrylate-based and silorane based composite resins. The objective of this study was to distinguish the surface roughness value of methacrylate-based composite resin and silorane based composite resins. This research was quasi-experimental. The sample used in this study were methacrylate and silorane based composite resins in discs form, with the size of 6 mm and the thickness of 3 mm, manufactured into 20 specimens and divided into 2 groups. The control group was immersed in the artificial saliva, and the treatment group was applied with 40% hydrogen peroxide. The result of the experiment analyzed using unpaired sample t-test showed significant differences in the average value of the surface roughness after the application of 40% hydrogen peroxide. The average value of methacrylate and silorane based composite resins were 2.744 μm and 3.417 μm, respectively. There was a difference in the surface roughness of methacrylate and silorane based composite resin compounds after the application of 40% hydrogen peroxide. The surface roughness value of the silorane-based composite resin was higher than the methacrylate-based.

Abstract

Introduction: The ageing process in older adults could cause a decreasing salivary secretion. Indicators of salivary secretion could be measured by observing an increasing salivary volume and pH, and a decreasing salivary viscosity. This study was aimed to observe the performance of 1% solution of baking soda on the salivary secretion of elderly xerostomia patients. Methods: The study used the quasi-experimental method with purposive sampling technique. The subjects were 24 older adults who were administered with 1% solution of baking soda. Results: The results showed that the averages volume, pH, and viscosity of the saliva before rinsing with 1% solution of baking soda were lower than after rinsing with the solution (p < 0.005). The average values of volume and pH of saliva before rinsing of 1% solution of baking soda were 0.15ml/min and 5.4, respectively, whilst after rinsing with the solution were 0.14ml/min and 7.42, respectively. The difference in saliva viscosity before and after rinsing with the solution showed that there were changes in the viscosity from frothy to watery. Conclusion: 1% solution of baking soda solution was able to increase the salivary secretion of elderly xerostomia patients, observed from an increasing salivary volume and pH, and a decreasing salivary viscosity after rinsing with 1% solution of baking soda.

Abstract

Streptococcus mutans is a commensal bacteria of the oral cavity, particularly found in dental plaque attached to the tooth surface, and can also found in the saliva, buccal mucosa, tongue, and the gingival sulcus. Clove cigarette contains the clove oil used worldwide as a herbal remedy for a variety of health disorders due to its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. The purpose of this study was to determined the antibacterial effect of the clove oil contained in the clove cigarette towards Streptococcus mutans as a cariogenic bacteria. The research was an experimental laboratory, which tested the sensitivity of the Streptococcus mutans bacteria taken from the saliva of 10 clove cigarette smokers towards the clove oil extract of the clove cigarette in-vitro by using the Kirby-Bauer method. The study showed that the clove oil extract of the clove cigarette which contained eugenol has antibacterial towards the growth of Streptococcus mutans, and there was a difference of the antibacterial activity between clove oil extracted from minced and combusted clove cigarette. The conclusion of this study was the clove oil extracted from minced clove cigarette had a better antibacterial effect than the combusted clove cigarette.
