Abstract

Abstract This article examines the dialectical relationship between Muhammadiyah and Javanese culture during the early period of the organization's establishment, namely 1912–1930. This study arises from the need to understand the interaction between modern Islam and the local cultural context, while challenging the historical stigma that views Muhammadiyah as an anti-cultural puritanical movement. The novelty of this book lies in its revisionist perspective, which shows that early Muhammadiyah did not reject Javanese culture, but was inclusive and accommodating towards cultural practices that did not conflict with Islamic principles. The methodology is historical-qualitative, with an archival and literature study approach. The results show that early Muhammadiyah, led by Ahmad Dahlan and other Javanese priyayi figures, utilized language, clothing, names, and local rituals as means of da'wah, while maintaining the purity of Islamic doctrine. A shift in attitude occurred after the 1930s due to the influence of Minangkabau scholars, Wahhabi ideology, and the formation of the Majlis Tarjih, which made the organization more puritanical and Sharia-oriented. This book also highlights Muhammadiyah's contribution to the modernization of education and Javanese society, as well as its relevance to contemporary cultural da'wah ideas. Keywords: Muhammadiyah, Javanese Culture, Modern Islam, Social History, Book Review.

Abstract

The advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the emergence of Society 5.0 have engendered profound transformations within contemporary educational paradigms, compelling Islamic education to recalibrate its orientation in response to rapid technological advancements while steadfastly preserving its spiritual substratum. This study is undertaken to critically examine the intellectual foundations of Islamic education in confronting such multifaceted challenges and to formulate strategic directions for its progressive development. Employing a qualitative library research design, the study draws upon a corpus of recent scholarly works, encompassing academic monographs and peer-reviewed journal articles pertinent to the discourse. The findings disclose that Islamic education necessitates a paradigmatic reconfiguration through the epistemic integration of religious and secular sciences, the pedagogical transmutation via technology-enhanced learning modalities, and the fortification of moral and spiritual character. Such integrative and transformative measures are deemed indispensable in mitigating the adverse ramifications of technological proliferation. In conclusion, Islamic education retains substantial potential to remain contextually germane and to cultivate a generation endowed with intellectual acumen alongside robust ethical and spiritual integrity in the contemporary epoch.

Abstract

With the growing interest in neuroscience application to education, neuroscience is now considered as an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the learning processes from the brain science perspective. However, its use in education has been contested because of the dangers of reductionism and neuromyths, and the lack of relevance of neuroscientific findings to classroom practice. The study seeks to critically examine the pro, counter and neutral positions on the integration of neuroscience in education and to identify a more balanced framework for its implementation. This study used a critical literature review method. The research data were obtained from 18 articles selected from 2018 to 2026 obtained from Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. The data were thematically analyzed to categorize arguments into three major perspectives: pro, counter, and neutral. The results suggest that the pro perspective highlights neuroscience as a scientific basis for evidence-based pedagogy whereas the counter perspective highlights risks of biological reductionism, neuromyths and loss of teacher autonomy. Meanwhile, the neutral perspective sees neuroscience as a contextual tool that should be critically integrated with educational theory and sociocultural realities. The scientific contribution of this article is the construction of a critical realist framework that reconciles competing perspectives, and repositions teachers as reflective practitioners mediating between scientific knowledge and pedagogical practice. The study concludes that the inclusion of neuroscience in education requires interdisciplinary, contextual and ethically grounded approaches to avoid simplification and strengthen meaningful learning practices.

Abstract

The Compilation of Islamic Law (Kompilasi Hukum Islam/KHI) is one of the most significant instruments in the development of Islamic law in Indonesia, particularly in the areas of marriage, inheritance, and waqf. Although it has served as the primary legal guideline for Religious Courts since its promulgation through Presidential Instruction No. 1 of 1991, the KHI continues to generate debates regarding its formal legitimacy, substantive provisions, and relevance to contemporary social developments. This study aims to critically examine the strengths, weaknesses, and reform directions of the KHI within the framework of Indonesia’s national legal system. The research employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data sources consist of primary legal materials, including the KHI and related regulations, as well as secondary materials such as books, journal articles, and previous scholarly studies. Data were analyzed through a normative assessment of the KHI’s legal position, functions, implementation, and challenges in Islamic family law practice. The findings indicate that the principal strength of the KHI lies in its ability to promote legal uniformity, simplify diverse fiqh opinions into operational legal provisions, and strengthen legal certainty within Religious Courts. However, the KHI also faces formal and substantive limitations, including its relatively weak legal status and its insufficient responsiveness to issues of gender justice, child protection, legal pluralism, and contemporary family dynamics. Therefore, KHI reform should be conducted through a participatory and maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah-based approach that emphasizes substantive justice and social responsiveness
