Abstract

Lontar Yusup Banyuwangi (LYB), copied in a Pegon script and still actively read in Banyuwangi, contains the life-story of the Prophet Yoseph from the age of twelve, when he dreamed of the sun, moon and eleven stars bowing to him, until he ascended the throne in Egypt, after his prophecy about King Pharaoh’s dream. The oldest manuscript of LYB, which is found in Kemiren - Banyuwangi and becomes Adi Purwadi’s collection, dates to 1829 in Javanese calendar, presumably derived from an Islamic source, and absorbs various local elements in its textual content. LYB, read with tunes that are intrinsically connected with stanzaic metrical patterns, consists of twelve pupuh (cantos) and four pupuh forms (Kasmaran, Durma, Pangkur, and Sinom) with a total of nearly 600 stanzas. This paper unveils local elements and text variations in LYB which include types of vocabulary usage, forms of tembang variations, and the modification of Perso-Arabic text that makes it different from commons. This shows the high power of local creativity in the writing and copying of manuscripts in the past.

Abstract

Lontar Sri Tanjung is a classical Nusantara manuscript that weaves narrative, moral teachings, and symbolism, serving as a vital repository of cultural memory for the Banyuwangi region and Osing community. Its recognition as an Indonesian National Collective Memory (IKON) in 2024 affirms its significance in preserving intangible heritage. The text recounts the legendary origin of Banyuwangi through the symbol of fragrant water, embodying values of loyalty, sacrifice, and the honor restoration. Central to the story is an idealized female figure who reflects traditional moral ideals while anchoring local cultural identity. Viewed through the lens of collective memory studies, Lontar Sri Tanjung is not a static relic but a living cultural space that continually shapes and transmits shared meanings across generations. Contemporary critical readings open possibilities for reinterpretation, including discussions of gender and power. Today, the manuscript remains relevant for character education, cultural literacy, reinforcing local identity, and advancing cultural diplomacy.

Abstract

Banyuwangi is increasingly prominent with its annual cultural performances. A variety of cultural products are presented to the public, including rituals, dance, music, and literature. All these are believed to be the legacy of the Blambangan Kingdom. Museums can play a role in Banyuwangi's efforts to demonstrate its identity to the public by exploring the background of the community's ancestral kingdom, the Blambangan Kingdom. This also underlies the purpose of this research, which is to analyze information about the history and indigenous knowledge of the Blambangan Kingdom community in the collections at the Omahseum Museum. This museum houses artifacts left behind by the kingdom. We used qualitative research with a museum studies approach. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, collection analysis, text analysis, and documentation of artifacts. The results show that the Omahseum Museum collections contain historical information and holds narrative evidence of the formation of Blambangan into Banyuwangi. The collections also contain information about local knowledge about the creation of writing media from palm leaves, natural ink, literary arts, clay processing, and metallurgy. The conclusion of this research is that the collection at the Omahseum Museum contains historical information (locations, name of Banyuwangi, and war) and indigenous knowledge (written media, literary arts, clay processing, and metal processing). The collection has the potential to become a source of local history teaching and museum interpretations based on local knowledge. The results of this study can inspire museum managers to expand their information services on the local knowledge behind each collection.

Abstract

Kemiren is known as a cultural tourism village in Banyuwangi Regency and is included in the Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark area. Despite its significant tourism potential, the tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis) still lacks practical supporting media that can assist tour guides, particularly when interacting with international tourists. This study aims to analyze the needs for a tourism pocket book by identifying the gap between the ideal and the existing conditions of tourism information media used in Kemiren Village. The study employed a descriptive qualitative design. Data were collected through questionnaires and documentation involving 20 members of Pokdarwis Kemiren as respondents. The questionnaire examined several aspects related to the tourism pocket book, including content, theme selection, visualization, and language use. The collected data were analyzed using the interactive analysis model proposed by Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that there is a significant gap between the expected condition and the existing condition because Kemiren Village does not yet have a tourism pocket book that can be used as a practical guide during tourism activities. The respondents expect the pocket book to contain clear and comprehensive information about cultural tourism in Kemiren, such as traditional rituals, culinary traditions, traditional houses, local arts, and community life. In addition, the pocket book is expected to include attractive visual elements such as photographs, illustrations, and maps, as well as a well-organized layout to facilitate understanding. The language used should be simple, clear, and presented in bilingual form (Indonesian and English) in order to support communication with international tourists. Therefore, this study concludes that the development of a tourism pocket book is highly necessary to support tourism management and improve the effectiveness of cultural tourism promotion in Kemiren Village.
