Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming academic writing practices, raising concerns about its role in supporting the development of communicative competence. In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, where students often struggle to produce socially appropriate and contextually coherent texts, GenAI tools such as ChatGPT offer immediate linguistic support, model texts, and feedback. Despite the growing use of GenAI tools, limited classroom-based evidence exists on how GenAI supports EFL students’ written communicative competence in authentic tasks. This qualitative case study investigates the role of ChatGPT-5 in supporting EFL university students’ written communicative competence in an email-writing task and examines how teachers mediate AI-assisted learning. The study involved thirty-nine second-year Indonesian university students. Data were collected from students’ email drafts, semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and learning artifacts, including screen captures and peer feedback. The findings indicate that students demonstrated development in sociolinguistic and discourse competence, particularly in refining tone, applying appropriate politeness strategies, and improving cohesion and coherence in their written texts. Even though ChatGPT played a role in these changes, but it was not the only thing that contributed. The results are affected by the combination of AI-generated input, teacher guidance, peer feedback, and students’ ability to think critically about the AI’s suggestions. This suggests that pedagogical mediation is very important for helping students develop their communicative competence when they use AI.

Abstract

Abstract

Trainees play an important role in supporting hotel operations, particularly in five-star hotels that maintain high service standards. However, differences in trainees' ability to adapt to demanding work environments and maintain performance throughout training remain a significant challenge in the hospitality industry. The aim of this study is to examine how trainee performance at five-star hotels in Bali is impacted by self-efficacy, self-esteem, and work environment. This study is interesting since it simultaneously examines the work environment and psychological aspects as drivers of trainee success, an area that has not gotten much attention in hospitality research. 121 trainees from operational departments of a five-star hotel in Bali were chosen by proportional stratified random selection for this study, which used a causal quantitative research design with a survey technique. The analysis of data was performed using multiple linear regression technique. The results show that while self-esteem has a good but negligible impact on trainee performance, self-efficacy and the workplace have a positive and substantial influence. Additionally, the work environment, self-efficacy, and self-esteem all significantly impact trainee performance at the same time, accounting for 50.7% of the variance. These results highlight how crucial it is to boost trainees' self-efficacy and create a positive work environment in order to improve trainee performance in the hospitality sector.

Abstract

This research investigates how the physical work environment (X1) and the non-physical work environment (X2) relate to employee performance (Y) at Hilton Bali Resort. A quantitative causal-associative design was applied, with data obtained from a digital questionnaire completed by all 30 employees in the study population through saturation sampling. Instrument testing showed that every item was valid (r-value > r-table = 0.361) and that each variable had strong internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha: X1 = 0.965, X2 = 0.946, Y = 0.948). After the data met the assumptions of normality, absence of multicollinearity, and homoscedasticity, multiple linear regression was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. The resulting model was Y = 1.938 + 0.132X1 + 0.532X2. Partial testing indicated a significant contribution from the physical work environment (t-count = 2.201 > t-table = 2.052; sig. = 0.036) and from the non-physical work environment (t-count = 4.668 > t-table = 2.052; sig. = 0.000). Simultaneous testing also confirmed that both predictors jointly affected performance (F-count = 35.814 > F-table = 3.34; sig. = 0.000), explaining 72.6% of the variance in employee performance. The standardized coefficients further show that the non-physical environment (β = 0.627) contributes more strongly than the physical environment (β = 0.296), emphasizing the importance of interpersonal and psychological conditions in supporting employee performance in a five-star hotel setting.

Abstract

The growing prominence of English as a global lingua franca in professional settings raises concerns about the adequacy of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks in representing the diversity of World Englishes. This study aims to assess the representation of World Englishes and intercultural awareness in an Indonesian junior high school English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbook, with a focus on its contribution to enhancing students' professional communication competence. The study employed Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to analyze both textual and visual components, alongside the broader social context, to uncover embedded ideologies and power dynamics. The study revealed a primary focus on Inner Circle cultures and Level 1 (Basic Cultural Awareness), with insufficient representation of other English Circles and limited opportunities for critical intercultural engagement. The textbook provides fundamental cultural knowledge but fails to cultivate the intercultural competence required for diverse professional environments. The study signals implications that are examined in relation to textbook developers and teaching practices aimed at enhancing professional communication in a global context
