Abstract

Thermal comfort in worship spaces is an important aspect that affects the quality of religious activities. However, intermittently occupied worship spaces, such as mosques during Jummah prayers, often experience spikes in heat load due to the accumulation of sensible and latent heat from occupants and solar radiation. This study aims to analyze the actual cooling load and determine the cooling load required to achieve a comfortable room temperature based on the Cooling Load Temperature Difference (CLTD) method. Temperature measurements were taken using data loggers at one outdoor point and nine indoor points during five Fridays between October 10 and November 7, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. Cooling load calculations were based on occupancy variations of 100, 300, and 600 people and comfort temperature targets of 23°C, 25°C, and 27°C. The results showed that the temperature in the worship hall was well above the thermal comfort limit. The actual cooling load increased significantly between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. WIB and during peak occupancy, reaching a peak load of 570,116.3 Btu/h. To achieve a comfortable room temperature, the cooling capacity needs to be increased by 8–35%. The final capacity recommendation based on the measurements and ASHRAE standards ranges from 44–69 TR. It can be concluded that the cooling system of Al-Furqon Mosque is currently under capacity and requires increased capacity and adaptive operational strategies to achieve thermal comfort in intermittently occupied worship spaces in a tropical climate.

Abstract

Symmetric airfoils like NACA 0015 have limitations in generating lift compared to asymmetric airfoils. Therefore, additional devices are needed to overcome this limitation. This research analyzes the use of a lift enhancement device called a plain flap, which is installed on the trailing edge of the NACA 0015 airfoil using the CFD method. Simulations were conducted at a Reynolds number of using the k-epsilon turbulent model. Three variations of geometry models were simulated: the NACA 0015 airfoil without a flap, the NACA 0015 airfoil with a plain flap at a deflection angle of 15°, and the NACA 0015 airfoil with a plain flap at a deflection angle of 30°. The simulation results show that the use of a flap can increase the maximum lift coefficient (Cl) of the airfoil. Initially, the maximum lift coefficient was 1.15 at an angle of attack (AoA) of 15°. With a plain flap deflection angle of 15°, the maximum lift coefficient increased to 1.5 at an AoA of 13°. With a plain flap deflection angle of 30°, the maximum lift coefficient further increased to 1.71 at an AoA of 10°. However, the use of a plain flap also leads to a significant increase in drag. On average, the drag coefficient (Cd) increased by 65% with a plain flap deflection angle of 15° and by 178% with a plain flap deflection angle of 30°.

Abstract

This research investigates the influence of wet scrubber installation on the performance efficiency of a shell and tube heat exchanger operating in a gasification-based Waste-to-Energy (WtE) power plant located in Surakarta, Indonesia. The study was conducted using a quantitative comparative approach over a four-month operational period, comparing system performance before and after the application of a wet scrubber. Three key parameters such as heat exchanger effectiveness, fouling factor, and pressure drop were analyzed to determine the impact of the gas cleaning system on thermal performance. The results show that the fouling factor decreased from 0.003 to 0.002 J/h·m²·°C, indicating cleaner heat transfer surfaces. Meanwhile, the pressure drop on the tube side reduced from 130.374 Pa to 46.134 Pa, reflecting smoother gas flow and lower mechanical resistance. Consequently, heat exchanger efficiency increased dramatically from 34% to 83%, signifying a substantial improvement in heat transfer capability. These findings confirm that the wet scrubber effectively minimizes tar and fine particulate deposits in syngas, improving heat transfer efficiency, operational stability, and equipment lifespan. The integration of wet scrubbers is therefore proven to be a vital enhancement for optimizing gas cleaning and energy conversion processes in Waste-to-Energy systems.

Abstract

This study experimentally characterizes Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) feedstock to assess its suitability for gasification-based Waste-to-Energy (WtE) systems. Ten samples from different urban collection sites underwent thorough analysis using standardized ultimate and proximate methods, alongside bomb calorimetry on a dry basis, which helped to ensure the results accuracy. A strong positive correlation was observed between carbon and hydrogen content and gross calorific value, while oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, and ash content exhibited a negative correlation with calorific potential. Notably, plastics and complex waste yielded the highest gross calorific values, around 30,000 kJ/kg and 31,600 kJ/kg, respectively, while high-ash content fractions recorded the lowest values at about 6,600 kJ/kg. The presence of volatile matter and fixed carbon positively impacts energy release, whereas ash dilutes fuel quality and increases heat absorption during combustion. The study suggests that pretreatment strategies, such as moisture reduction, ash fraction removal, and selective sorting for hydrocarbon-rich materials, effectively enhance fuel quality for gasification and reduce nitrogen and sulphur emission risks. The data reveal significant variability among different waste fractions, indicating that effective feedstock management and reactor design must address compositional heterogeneity to ensure reliable gasification performance.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia’s growing energy demand and dependence on fossil fuels necessitate renewable alternatives such as biomass-based biopellets. Specific Background: Coffee grounds and sawdust are abundant organic wastes with complementary thermal and mechanical properties suitable for pelletization. Knowledge Gap: However, limited studies have clarified how varying proportions of these materials influence biopellet quality relative to SNI 8021:2020 standards. Aims: This study evaluates the effects of four ratios of coffee grounds–sawdust mixtures (80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50) on physical and proximate characteristics of biopellets. Results: One-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (p < 0.05) showed significant differences across all parameters. Formulations A and B produced the highest calorific values (4674–4689 cal/g) meeting SNI requirements, while B achieved the highest density (560.34 kg/m³). Moisture and ash contents also met standards; however, density and fixed carbon fell below SNI thresholds due to the absence of torrefaction. Novelty: This study demonstrates that optimizing coffee grounds–sawdust mixtures alone cannot meet all quality indicators without thermal pretreatment. Implications: Incorporating torrefaction and enhanced pressing conditions is essential to improve energy density and combustion stability, supporting the development of high-quality waste-based biofuel in Indonesia. Highlights: The optimal calorific value is achieved with higher proportions of coffee grounds (80:20 and 70:30). Density and fixed carbon remain below SNI standards due to the absence of torrefaction. Thermal pretreatment is essential to improve combustion stability and overall pellet quality. Abstract

Determining the molar volume of a real gas requires solving the nonlinear Van der Waals equation. This study aims to compare the efficiency and accuracy of the Newton-Raphson method and the Secant method in solving the Van der Waals equation using the Python programming language. The case study examines the determination of the molar volume of methane gas at a pressure of 56 atm and a temperature of 450 K. The comparison parameters used are the number of iterations and the speed of convergence with an error tolerance of 10⁻⁷. The results show that the Newton-Raphson method requires fewer iterations, namely 4, with a computational time of 0.00012 s. In contrast, the Secant method requires more iterations, namely 6, and a computational time of 0.00015 s. The Newton-Raphson method is less practical because it necessitates the calculation of the derivative of the function, whereas the Secant method is more practical for application in Python scripts as it only requires the calculation of the Van ders Waals equation function.
