Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance the pedagogical and creative competencies of English teachers at SMA PGRI 1 Denpasar through a workshop titled “Designing English Textbook Covers Based on a Semiotic Analysis Approach.” The program was divided into three phases: pre-activity, implementation, and post-activity. Initial needs assessment identified teachers’ familiarity with semiotics and visual design. The workshop provided both theoretical insights into visual semiotics and practical training using Canva to create textbook covers that reflect semiotic principles. Post-activity evaluation included post-tests, feedback forms, and continued mentoring via WhatsApp groups. The results showed significant improvement in participants’ ability to integrate symbols and signs meaningfully into cover designs, enhancing their instructional media skills. This program underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between linguists and educators in fostering media literacy and creative teaching. It serves as a model for similar initiatives in other schools and contributes to academic discourse on the application of semiotics in educational contexts.

Abstract

Within the framework of Kurikulum Merdeka, English language instruction emphasizes not only the acquisition of linguistic structures but also the pragmatic use of language across diverse social and cultural contexts. Comic strips, as part of the learning materials, offer authentic language interactions that reflect everyday communication and provide exposure to various politeness strategies. This study employed a qualitative approach with content analysis as the method to examine 164 utterances found in the comic strips. The utterances were classified using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory, which identifies four types of politeness strategies: bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. The findings show that bald on-record strategy was the most frequently used (93 instances), followed by positive politeness (70 instances). Negative politeness was absent, and off-record occurred only once. The predominance of direct strategies is likely attributed to the informal nature of peer-to-peer interactions, where minimal social distance reduces the need for indirectness. These results suggest that comic strips can serve as effective pedagogical tools for fostering learners’ pragmatic competence, particularly in the domain of politeness. The study provides pedagogical implications for educators and material developers in designing instructional resources that integrate both linguistic and pragmatic dimensions of language learning.

Abstract

The study aimed to identify and analyze the errors made by seventh-grade students at SMP Dwijendra Denpasar in pronouncing certain English consonants, which are essential components of their target language learning. The study specifically focuses on the student’s articulation of six English contoid consonants: [ʃ], [ʧ], [θ], [ʒ], [ʤ], and [ð]. A qualitative descriptive method was applied in this research, involving several stages: collecting data from the students as research subjects, organizing and constructing the data for analysis, interpreting the results, and drawing relevant conclusions. The research findings revealed that no students could pronounce the targeted consonants accurately according to standard English pronunciation norms. The articulation errors were mainly caused by various influencing factors, including interlingual transfer, where the students’ first language interferes with their pronunciation of English sounds, and intralingual factors, which refer to difficulties arising from the complexities within the English language. However, the mispronunciation of key consonant sounds created misunderstandings and affected the clarity of their spoken language. As a result, these errors posed a challenge in achieving effective oral communication as a critical aspect of mastering a second language. The findings emphasized the importance of addressing these pronunciation challenges through targeted interventions and improved teaching strategies to enhance students’ language proficiency and communication skills.
