Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe how teachers adapt both verbal and nonverbal communication, as well as the effects of these two types of communication on students' motivation to learn English. This study analyzed the instructors' verbal and nonverbal communication in the English classroom using the framework of teachers' talk developed by Sinclair and Brazil (1985) and Wang and Loewen (2015). Transcripts of lessons and video recordings of teachers' behavior were used to collect data. Procedures for data analysis involve organizing and prepping the data, coding, summarizing, and interpreting the data using the teachers' utterances and behaviors as the unit of analysis. Initial analysis results were looked at using data source triangulation and focused group discussion to validate the findings. The research revealed that questioning was the most common form of verbal communication among teachers, while hand gestures and facial expressions were the most common forms of non-verbal communication. Questions are the most inspirational instructors' verbal communication, and facial expressions are the most inspirational teachers' non-verbal communication.

According to the study's findings, utilising this specific card game as an educational tool can provide significant advantages and aid teachers in delivering instruction more effectively. Furthermore, it possesses the capacity to improve student's proficiency in the English language and to motivate pupils to participate actively in classroom activities. This will facilitate favourable interactions between professors and students and between students and the learning medium.

Abstract

This study looks into collaborative techniques in linguistics education, focusing on fundamental concepts, principles, components, and the roles of many stakeholders in the educational process. The study demonstrates how collaborative models can improve linguistics education by ensuring active involvement and social interaction between students and teachers. This study employs a grounded theory methodology, which includes qualitative data gathering and analytical techniques, such as open, axial, and selective coding, to discover main themes and patterns. The interviews and discussions with professors and students from the English and Indonesian language departments are included in the research design, allowing for a thorough examination of their experiences and perspectives. Micro-linguistic theory, communicative skills, and collaborative techniques are essential to good linguistics teaching. Key findings suggest that when approaches are employed, and there is more activity, linguistic competency increases, and general educational outcomes improve. The findings spark curiosity about the role of instructor mediation, classroom management, and multimedia resources in improving collaboration. This study's outcomes suggest potential routes for future research on collaborative strategies in linguistics education, particularly with the use of technology and multimedia learning systems. Further research is needed to investigate the long-term effects of these strategies on student accomplishment and the viability of these models in various educational contexts.

Abstract

This research aims to prove whether the scanning technique is effective in teaching reading comprehension to students. This research used a pre-experimental research design and took one class, 9.1, as the sample. The analysis showed that the scanning technique greatly contributed to students' comprehension of reading advertisement texts. This can be seen from the increase in students' scores in the pre-test and post-test. The average score in the pre-test was 58.52 and increased to 74.07 in the post-test. Then, the data from both tests were analyzed using the significance parameter, and the results showed that the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.00, which means the sig. value (2-tailed) 0.05. Following the testing criteria, the results showed a significant increase in students' achievement in reading comprehension by using the scanning technique before and after the pre-test and post-test were conducted. This means that the scanning technique is effective and can be applied in grade nine of SMP Negeri 9 Tarakan to teach students reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study investigates the problems faced by students in speaking English, focusing on linguistic, psychological, and motivational challenges. Speaking is a crucial skill in English language learning, yet many students struggle due to limited vocabulary, difficulties in constructing sentences, and pronunciation issues. Psychological barriers such as lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, and low motivation further hinder their speaking abilities. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 37 Grade 11 students and interviews with 5 selected participants from SMAN 1 Tarakan. The findings reveal that students’ difficulties are multifaceted, encompassing linguistic issues and deeper psychological concerns, compounded by a lack of early exposure to English and disinterest in the subject. Addressing these challenges requires a holistic approach involving targeted practice, a supportive learning environment, bridging programs, and engaging teaching strategies to enhance students’ speaking skills and motivation in learning English.

Abstract

This research analyses school culture and governance in SMPN 7 Tarakan and the practices, habits, and management that create a conducive learning atmosphere. It underlines the importance of school policies, engagement in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, a healthy learning environment, and facilities management for students to be engaged and succeed academically. Adopting a qualitative approach based on observational data, the authors establish a link between orderly school rules and disciplinary and structural order but suggest that ethnically diverse communities may benefit from looser structures. The study emphasises the need for sufficient facilities to boost student motivation and engagement in academic and extra-curricular activities. In conclusion, this study offers a possibility to view the school within quality education and students' personal growth by having an integrative perspective — defining a concept of doing justice for educational quality.
