Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a public health problem that is of concern to both developed and even developing countries because one in two elderly people suffer from diabetes mellitus. Chronic hyperglycemia in synergy with other metabolic abnormalities in diabetes mellitus patients can cause damage to multiple organ systems, leading to the development of disabling and life-threatening health complications, microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) and macrovascular complications. The level of patient compliance in taking medication is one of the factors that determines the success of diabetes mellitus therapy. This study aims to determine the emotional support of the family on the level of adherence to taking diabetes medication in elderly people with diabetes mellitus. The sample in this study was 86 people using a non-probability sampling technique with a consecutive sampling approach. The research design used was descriptive correlation with a cross-sectional approach. The data analysis test used is univariate, bivariate with the Chi Square test. The research results show that there is a significant relationship between family emotional support and adherence to taking diabetes medication in elderly people with diabetes mellitus (p=0.001). Conclusion: Family emotional support for patients is very necessary for compliance to achieve successful diabetes mellitus therapy so that it indirectly plays a role in stabilizing blood glucose levels in diabetes mellitus patients.

Abstract

Every year, 15 million people worldwide have a stroke. Education using video that are thought to be simple for the elderly to grasp can alter knowledge, attitudes, and behavior among the elderly who are at risk of stroke. This study were conducted to assess the impact of early stroke preventive education videos on stroke risk in the elderly. The method was a quasi-experimental using a non-randomized pretest-posttest control group design. This study was carried out by delivering an educational video intervention for early stroke prevention for three months and comparing the results to those of the control group or without the intervention. The population of this study was the elderly, with a sampling approach of purposive sampling and a sample size of 60 people at Posbindu in the Cipayung district. The data analysis test employed was univariate and bivariate, utilizing independent t-test to assess the effect of the instructional video intervention on early stroke prevention. The difference in the average score of knowledge (1.333; pvalue = 0.011), attitude (1.533; pvalue = 0.011), and behavior (0.466; pvalue = 0.028) in the intervention group before and after the intervention was greater than the difference in the average score of knowledge (0.233; pvalue = 0.165), attitude (0.166; pvalue = 0.484), and behavior (0.000; pvalue = 1.000) in the control group. Furthermore, the independent T-test revealed that the instructional video intervention was helpful in improving knowledge (p-value = 0.064) and attitude (p-value = 0.008). Early stroke prevention education movies improve the elderly's knowledge and attitudes.

Abstract

The increasing proportion of elderly followed by the increasing life expectancy has improved the prevalence of various chronic-degenerative diseases and dementia. The promotive efforts using exercise programs, such as Tai Chi and cognitive therapy, significantly increase the physical fitness, mental well-being, and cognitive function of the elderly. This research aimed to predict the effectiveness of exercise programs for particular groups living in nursing homes. The method of this research was a quasi-experiment with a control group design. Samples are elderly living in the nursing home. The research samples were 116 elderlies living in nursing homes in Jakarta and South Sumatra. They were selected using a random sampling strategy. Statistical tests employed a dependent t-test, independent t-test, and multiple linear regression test. This study revealed that the intervention group showed different cognitive function average values before and after implementing the exercise programs (p-value = 0.001). In contrast, the control group did not show any differences. The intervention and control groups showed different cognitive function mean values after applying the exercise program (p-value = 0.057). Another finding denoted that the length of stay in the nursing home affected the elderly's cognitive functions). This research recommends policymakers and healthcare personnel use the developed exercise program to perform complementary therapy, empower the elderly, and be replaced by many orders of the healthcare system.

Methods:This study uses a quantitative approach that is descriptive analytic, using a cross sectional design. The sample in this study were 85 elderly who were taken using purposive sampling. Data analysis used the chi square test. The instrument used to measure the possibility of dementia in respondents is a modified standard instrument of the HVLT (Hopkins Verbal Learning Test Version) and modified DKAS (Dementia Knowledge Assessment Scale). Results:The results showed that there was a relationship between the level of knowledge of the elderly about dementia and the risk of dementia with a total p value of 0.030 (<0.05). Conclusion:The level of knowledge about dementia in elderly respondents is mostly knowledgeable. The majority of the risk of dementia in the elderly is in the normal category.
