Abstract

Background: Cognitive changes in the elderly are a natural consequence of the degenerative process. In this process, sleep quality becomes an important factor affecting cognitive function. While it is known that prolonged sleep disturbances can increase the risk of cognitive impairment in the elderly, few studies have specifically explored the relationship between sleep quality and cognitive function in the context of the elderly in elderly residents. Aim: To determine the relationship between sleep quality and cognitive function in elderly residents. Methods: This study used a quantitative method with a descriptive-analytic design and a cross-sectional approach. The research population comprised all elderly residents of Tresna Werdha Social Institution Budi Mulia 3 in Jakarta, totaling 282 individuals, with a sample size of 80 elderly individuals selected using simple random sampling. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires, and data analysis was performed using the Chi-square test. Results: The results showed that the majority had good sleep quality (55%) and normal cognitive function (51.2%). There is a significant relationship between sleep quality and cognitive function (p=0.000) with an OR value of 19.444. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between sleep quality and cognitive function in the elderly. Recommendations: Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that nurses carry out community-based interventions, such as sleep health education activities and stress management, to support comprehensive elderly health. Further research is recommended to develop and test the effectiveness of non-pharmacological-based interventions, such as cognitive behavioural therapy and meditation techniques, in improving the quality of elderly sleep. Keywords: cognitive function; elderly; sleep quality.

Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension continues to increase, and various epidemiological studies revealed an increase in the incidence of hypertension in different parts of the world. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), The number of Americans over the age of 20 who suffer from hypertension has risen to 74.5 million, while nearly 90% of cases have no identified cause. If not treated effectively, hypertension may cause damage to blood vessels throughout the body, the most prominent of which is the danger of damage to the brain, eyes, heart, and kidneys. An introduction to stroke is essential for reducing the risk of stroke in people with hypertension. Multimedia is one of the developments in health education media, which is in accordance with the advancement of digital technology, incorporating stroke prevention. This study aims to examine the impact of multimedia-based education on hypertension patients' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior toward stroke prevention. This research is a quasi-experiment with a pre-posttest with a control group design. The sampling technique employed was simple random sampling, and the sample size determination utilized a hypothesis test of the average difference in two independent groups of 60 respondents. Data analysis in this study administered paired t-test and independent t-test. The results unveiled that there were significant differences in knowledge (p=0.022), attitudes (p=0.001), and behavior (p=0.008) of hypertension patients in preventing stroke after intervention in the form of multimedia-based education. Therefore, it is recommended that the community can perform hypertension treatment independently frequently, and the implementation of the prolanis program can be enhanced so that people can receive services easily and regularly to prevent stroke.

Abstract

The quality of life related to health can be affected by disease conditions, one of which is hypertension. Hypertension can reduce the quality of life due to the impact of the disease itself as well as the consequences of the treatment carried out. Elderly people who have a poor quality of life can have a negative impact on their physical and mental health. The quality of life of the elderly with hypertension is influenced by various factors, one of which is self-efficacy. Self-efficacy makes an important contribution to understanding the process of behavior change, where high self-efficacy makes individuals feel capable of taking the necessary actions. The study was conducted to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and quality of life in the elderly with hypertension and the characteristics of the elderly, namely age, gender, and family caring for the elderly. This study is an observational analytical study  with a bivariate Chi Square test. The sample in this study amounted to 106 elderly people who were selected using the Purposive Sampling method. Data was collected using questionnaires with instruments. Of the 106 elderly respondents in the Cakung Health Center area who became respondents, the results of the elderly who had high self-efficacy with the results of 65 (61.3%) were elderly, while the elderly who had low self-efficacy obtained results of 41 (38.7%). In addition, the results of the elderly who had a good quality of life were obtained with the results of 59 (55.7%) elderly people, while the elderly who had a poor quality of life with the results of 47 elderly people (44.3%). This study shows a meaningful relationship between self-efficacy and the quality of life of the elderly with hypertension (p=0.006). There is a meaningful relationship between self-efficacy and the quality of life of the elderly with hypertension.

Abstract

The elderly population is particularly vulnerable to various health issues, including sleep disturbances and hypertension. Poor sleep quality can lead to increased blood pressure by stimulating the sympathetic nervous system and elevating stress hormones. This study explored the relationship between sleep quality and blood pressure among elderly women with hypertension. This study uses a quantitative method with an analytical descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling with a sample of 67 elderly women with hypertension. The instruments used were the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire to measure sleep quality and a digital sphygmomanometer to measure blood pressure. The data analysis in this study used the Chi-Square test. Most of the elderly had poor sleep quality as many as 50 elderly (74.6%) and degree II hypertension as many as 44 elderly people (65.7%). The results of statistical tests showed a significant relationship between sleep quality and blood pressure in elderly women with hypertension, as evidenced by obtaining a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05).Poor sleep quality in people with hypertension can lead to memory impairment, cognitive abilities, and decreased health. It is hoped that the role of the family and the community health center will be to carry out monitoring and evaluation and motivate the elderly to control blood pressure and sleep regularly.
