Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of Maccera Manurung, a local tradition that combines local culture with Islamic values. Through a religious anthropology approach, this study aims to understand how the relationship between local culture and Islamic values is manifested in Maccera Manurung, as well as its significance for local communities. This study used qualitative research methods by conducting in-depth interviews with religious leaders, community members, and scholars in the area who practiced Maccera Manurung. The results showed that Maccera Manurung is a unique phenomenon of religious and cultural syncretism, where local culture and Islamic values influence each other and give different meanings to local communities. On the one hand, Maccera Manurung maintains a distinctive local cultural identity, and on the other hand, opens up space for interpretation and adaptation of Islamic values relevant to local communities. The study concludes that Maccera Manurung can be seen as a form of cultural innovation and religious adaptation that results in a dynamic and evolving religious tradition. This research contributes to an understanding of the dynamics of the relationship between religion and culture in local contexts as well as yielding insights into how religious and cultural syncretism can shape unique cultural identities.

Abstract

The management of marine culinary tourism in Bulukumba Regency faces a fundamental paradox between the imperative of ecological conservation and the demands of tourism-based economic growth. The failure to balance these two aspects indicates a deeper problem than mere policy implementation. This research aims to critically analyze the effectiveness of public policy in managing sustainable marine culinary tourism. The analysis focuses on the root cause of this failure, identified as a governance deficit. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders. These stakeholders included government elements, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) actors, fishing communities, and environmental activists, supplemented by policy document analysis. The research findings reveal that the policy failure is rooted in a systemic governance deficit. It manifests in three forms: (1) a policy paradox that creates normative conflicts at the regulatory level; (2) an implementation gap where economic empowerment programs are partial, charitable in nature, and ecologically blind; and (3) the marginalization of local actors due to the dominance of an exclusive, top-down approach. It is concluded that the solution lies not in adding new regulations, but instead in a fundamental reconfiguration of the governance model. Therefore, a paradigm shift is recommended from hierarchical government to collaborative governance. This model places substantive public participation and community-based oversight at the center of achieving just, inclusive, and sustainable marine tourism.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the gastronomic branding strategies of Bugis-Makassar traditional treats in starred hotels. This research uses an inductive qualitative analysis. Inductive analysis is an approach that begins with field facts, analyzes them based on relevant theories and arguments, and ultimately yields a conclusion. The results show that Bugis-Makassar traditional treats have been successfully positioned as a crucial element in the hospitality industry, particularly in South Sulawesi. The branding strategies implemented by several starred hotels involve aspects of nutrition, color, shape, layout, and the arrangement of slices that not only blend local wisdom with international standards but also highlight the originality and authenticity of the cuisine. The visually appealing and nutritionally compliant presentation, integrated with local wisdom in every aspect, demonstrates how Bugis-Makassar traditional treats can enhance the culinary experience offered by starred hotels, while also strengthening the identity of traditional gastronomy in a global context. Therefore, it is recommended that the relevant stakeholders expand the application of gastronomic branding strategies for Bugis-Makassar traditional treats. Chefs are encouraged to continue developing innovations in a presentation that include aspects of nutrition, colour, shape, layout, and the arrangement of slices to maintain and increase tourist interest in traditional treats. Tourists are urged to include traditional treats as a vital part of their travel experience. Cultural experts are expected to provide preferences for other types of Bugis-Makassar traditional treats that are being eroded or no longer found in the modern era to chefs so that they can be considered for revitalization and reintroduction in menus. Furthermore, this strategy can be applied not only in starred hotels but also in cultural events, culinary festivals, and other related sectors to enhance recognition and appreciation of Bugis-Makassar traditional treats on a broader scale.

Abstract

This study aims to document the establishment process and role of the Makassar Arts Council. This study uses a qualitative content analysis. This analysis enables researchers to construct a coherent and comprehensive historical narrative, and ultimately yields a conclusion. The results show that DKM was established in response to the challenging and conflict-ridden dynamics of the arts in Makassar, especially concerning the politicization of the arts. This situation prompted artists to form a more neutral venue to encourage artistic expression free from political intimidation, which ultimately crystallized in the establishment of DKM on July 25, 1969. Since then, DKM has grown into an institution that continuously supports and nurtures the arts, making Makassar a center for dynamic and sustainable artistic activities. Therefore, it is recommended that historians thoroughly document the historical phases of DKM in the social and political context to enrich the archives of Indonesian art history. Meanwhile, artists are encouraged to actively collaborate with DKM in creating innovative works and promoting their works more broadly. The Makassar Municipal Government is recommended to enhance financial support and infrastructure for DKM, making it a strategic partner in developing cultural policies. Lastly, the general public is encouraged to become more involved in DKM activities, supporting artistic initiatives that can enrich local cultural life and ensure the sustainability and dynamic growth of the arts in Makassar.
