Tentena Village in Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia features several caves with ancient burials. These burials have been confirmed as cultural heritage sites under the protection of the Indonesian government laws number 10 of 2010 about cultural heritages; however, there is minimal knowledge about the history and the religious significance of the burials that have been documented. Within the current literature, there has been no systematic research conducted on the historical and cultural aspects of the human remains in these caves. The lacks of information makes the generation of the community where the sites belong feel that there is no bond between them and the sites. This problem triggers indifferent attitude toward sites preservation. As a response to this gap within the literature, this study aims to observe and analyze the historical aspects specified in the death rituals focused on the Latea Caves’ burial site through identifying the skeletal remains. The method that was applied in this research is a mix-method approach. The quantitative method is used to collect the statistical data on the remains and artifacts based on the forensic anthropological examination techniques and DNA analysis while the qualitative method is used to obtain data from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with the Pamona ethnic group. The decision to conduct interviews with this group is due to the skeletons likely belonging to the ancient Pamona tribe from Wawolembo Hill, which fought with the Napu tribe during a tribal war in approximately 1400 BC. Application of basic forensic anthropology identification techniques and DNA analysis found that the majority of the skeletal remains are composed of women. These results are significant in providing information about the burial practices and the indigenous culture of the Pamona ethnic group.

This study aims to reveal the ways in which widows of conflict victims manage their assets and their abilities in an effort to survive and improve social welfare after the Poso conflict. Data were obtained from two sources: an analysis of literature during the Poso conflict and interviews with victims and their relatives. The results of the study show that widows in desperate situations save their lives from threats and riots by utilising social capital by relying on relatives with ownership. Assets and capabilities are linked by access and property ownership. This was built before the conflict occurred so as to strengthen the bonds of post-conflict social capital with kinship strength among the closest relatives, such as parents, siblings, and nephews or nieces, based on the same religion, for their survival.

The method of medication develops following the world of thought and culture of humans. The beliefs in the nonmaterial world have profoundly affected in the early days of traditional medication methods. The period of modern medicine eliminates this belief and offers a more logical understanding of health. The traditional healing methods are not completely lost in these modern times. Its existence can still be found amid rural communities whose minds are reconstructed and isolated by traditional beliefs. The thoughts about health and diseases which come from witchcraft then become a benchmark for them to choose witchery medicine too, which in this case known as dukun. This is then becoming a big problem for the citizens in Silanga Village, where as a result of the belief in black magic possessed by humans to hurt other humans, which in the Kaili Rai Ethnic Language they call the topeule. Those then became the origin of the people to choose dukun (sando) for their medication process. The results of this study indicate that supernatural medical practices are still alive in the midst of the Silanga Village community and are trusted by the community who use them.

This study develops understanding from the perspective of adaptation and strategies that are unique to humans as cultural creatures. However, this study develops deeper by revealing the cultural acceleration of humans using/activating their potential in overcoming the crisis conditions that surrounded them at that time. Therefore, this study site is placed in community life after a natural disaster in Lere Village, West Palu District, Palu City. This study uses a case study approach by highlighting the post-tsunami phenomenon which only took place 1 year after 28 September 2018. The results of the study show that the cultural acceleration that is developed relies heavily on social, cultural conditions and material availability. People are required/pressured to experience sudden and urgent conditions, they will continue to develop accelerated actions based on the conditions and phenomena they are living at that time, as a form of negotiation and compromise regarding their lives.
