Abstract

The study aims to explain the extent of the role of constructs that arise from factor analysis conducted by researchers on some of the lowest factors or constructs. Factor analysis is an initial that can be identified from several variables that are grouped into higher factors so that they are referred to as second order factors. This research is a research with the latest reference-based literature review approach from research methodology books. The second order factor allows researchers to simplify a model by combining several interrelated constructs. These variables are complex to be understood by the researcher and make interpretations of the analyzed results. In contrast to the first order factor, the construct that arises from the collection of variables is then measured and identified as the lowest factor in the level of factor hierarchy from the analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of transformational leadership on the psychological well-being of seafarers, as well as to analyze the moderating role of transformational leadership in the relationship between technostress, a consequence of maritime digitalization, and psychological well-being. Along with the acceleration of digital transformation in the maritime industry, seafarers face new psychological challenges in addition to existing traditional work stressors. This study adopts a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design involving Indonesian seafarers from various types of vessels. Data were collected using three main instruments: the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to measure transformational leadership, Ryff's Scales of Psychological Well-being to measure psychological well-being, and the Techno-Stress Scale to measure the level of technology-induced stress. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis show that transformational leadership has a positive and significant effect on the psychological well-being of seafarers. Furthermore, the moderation analysis indicates that transformational leadership significantly mitigates the negative impact of technostress on psychological well-being. These findings provide strong practical implications for the shipping industry, emphasizing the urgency of developing transformational leadership competencies for ship officers as a key strategy to maintain the mental health and resilience of seafarers in facing the complexities of the digital era.

Abstract

The global maritime industry's transition towards sustainable operations, or green shipping, is driven by increasingly stringent international regulations and heightened environmental awareness. However, the success of this transition critically depends on the readiness and competence of its frontline human resources: the ship's crew. This research aims to evaluate the implementation of a specialized green shipping training program for seafarers, focusing on competency needs analysis and the measurement of its impact on operational performance. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design anchored in the Kirkpatrick Model of Evaluation, this study integrates quantitative data from pre- and post-training assessments and operational Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with qualitative data from surveys and in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that the structured training significantly enhanced crew knowledge of energy efficiency regulations (EEXI and CII), technical skills in operating energy-saving technologies such as trim optimization software, and the application of more efficient operational behaviors on the job. Quantitatively, the training implementation demonstrated a measurable positive impact on operational performance, including a reduction in average fuel consumption, improved transit time efficiency, and lower operational costs per nautical mile. This study provides robust empirical evidence that investment in human capital through training is a crucial and strategic element for achieving regulatory compliance, competitive advantage, and decarbonization goals in the shipping industry.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of job satisfaction on turnover intention among merchant marine crews in Indonesia. As one of the world's largest suppliers of seafarers, Indonesia plays a crucial role in the global maritime industry. However, this profession faces unique challenges such as isolation, high workloads, and prolonged separation from family, which significantly impact job satisfaction and the intention to leave the job. This research employs a quantitative approach with a correlational design. Data were collected through an online survey distributed to active national merchant marine crews, using standardized instruments: the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) to measure job satisfaction and the Turnover Intention Scale (TIS) to measure turnover intention. Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression techniques. The analysis results indicate a significant negative relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention. This finding suggests that higher levels of job satisfaction experienced by seafarers correspond to a lower tendency to leave their profession or company. The practical implication of this study is the importance for national shipping companies not only to meet the minimum compensation standards regulated by the government but also to invest in motivator factors such as a supportive social work environment, performance recognition, and clear career paths to enhance the retention of qualified crew members and ensure the operational sustainability of the national shipping industry. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of work stress and organizational support on the performance of Ship's Crew in the Indonesian domestic shipping sector. Specifically, this research examines the role of organizational support as a moderating variable that can weaken the negative impact of work stress on performance. The seafaring profession is faced with unique and demanding job requirements, including social isolation, long working hours, and a challenging physical environment, which can potentially lead to significant stress and reduced performance. This study adopts a quantitative approach with a causal-explanatory design. The research sample consisted of 125 crew members working in several domestic shipping companies, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Primary data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression Analysis and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The results of the study show three main findings: (1) Work stress has a negative and significant effect on crew performance (β=−0.278,p<0.05). (2) Organizational support has a positive and significant effect on crew performance (β=0.412,p<0.01). (3) Organizational support was proven to significantly moderate the relationship between work stress and performance (β=0.195,p<0.05), where the negative influence of work stress on performance becomes weaker at high levels of organizational support. This study concludes that organizational support not only functions as a performance driver but also as a vital protective mechanism in mitigating the adverse effects of stress in the high-pressure maritime work environment. The practical implication is that shipping companies need to strategically invest in building a strong organizational support system as an integral part of safety management and human resource performance improvement.
