Abstract

An inventory of plants as medicinal material based on local knowledge in east region Indonesia, especially in Halmahera Island, is lacking. This local knowledge, which is inherited orally from elder to their next generation, will be extinct if the information is not documented. Furthermore, plants utilized without conservation effort may cause extinction. According to these reasons, an investigation about local knowledge in plants utilized as medicinal material by Marimabate villagers on Sub district Jailolo, West Halmahera has been conducted in March 2014. The objective of this study is explaining medicinal plants based on local knowledge of Marimabate community and their conservation behaviour. Ethnobotanical data was collected by using semi-structured interview method to shaman and villagers. From the investigation, 21 species of used plant belonged 14 families were recorded. The data showed that leaf was the most often part used among others, they were 16 species. Almost of the using ways of plant was by mixed with warm water then drank to patients. The cureable diasease were 23, such as ‘lidah putih’, ‘bibit-malaria’, menstruation syndrome, and skin burned. The majority medical plants resource was from semi-wild plant (50% species), that showedthe community conservation behavior has been enough applied. Abstract

NS3 protein is 618 amino acids (aa) in length containing serine protease and helicase domains required for DENV replication. Alignment of consensus amino acid sequences from all four DENV serotypes demonstrated that this protein is more conserved (78%) among the different dengue serotypes, which elicits a strong cellular immune response after viral infection in humans and animal models. Present study, a central hydrophilic region of NS3 cofactor, NS2B (NS2BH) with full length of NS3 genes DENV3 Indonesian strain were amplified from CDNA following PCR, and inserted to PYES2/CT shuttle vector. The recombinant plasmid was transformed and expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae expression system. As result, detection with Anti-His detector and Anti-NS3 shown NS2BH/NS3 was expressed as 83 KDA protein band. We found that addition of NS2BH on NS3 full length construction plasmid increase the yield and activity of protein expression in S. cerevisiae. In future study, our recombinant NS2B/NS3 protein can be used as recombinant protein in Dengue vaccine development.

Abstract

Abstract

Oxidative stress constitutes a major pathophysiological mechanism in conditions ranging from exercise-induced muscle fatigue to chronic organ damage including diabetic nephropathy and ischemic stroke. Medicinal plants offer therapeutic potential through bioactive compounds that modulate cellular defense pathways. This systematic review evaluated the molecular mechanisms and clinical efficacy of medicinal plants (Kaempferia galanga, Nigella sativa, Panax ginseng, and other herbal formulations) in managing oxidative stress across diverse health contexts. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using reputable databases. Studies measuring oxidative stress biomarkers (MDA, SOD) and cellular signaling pathways (Nrf2, NF-κB, PI3K/AKT) were included. Results showed that N. sativa and K. galanga supplementation in athletes significantly reduced MDA levels and inflammatory cytokines (IL-6), accelerating post-exercise recovery. Bioactive compounds including Ginsenoside Ro and Kaempferide demonstrated organ-protective effects through Nrf2/HO-1 activation, autophagy promotion, and mitochondrial protection in ocular and renal tissues. These findings indicate that medicinal plants exert cytoprotective effects by activating endogenous antioxidant systems. The therapeutic spectrum spanning athletic performance enhancement to chronic organ protection underscores the translational potential of herbal interventions as promising antioxidant agents.

Abstract

Background: Sports students, often also athletes and coaches, require optimal physical condition and fitness for peak performance and achievement. Maintaining fitness minimizes health risks and boosts exercise efficiency. VO2Max, the maximal oxygen uptake during intense exercise, is a key cardiovascular fitness indicator closely tied to muscle work capacity. Elevated Body Mass Index (BMI) and excess fat can impair cardiac function, reduce cardiac output, and hinder oxygen uptake, leading to lower VO2Max. This study focuses specifically on trained, active sports students, distinguishing it from prior research on general student populations. Objectives: To examine the relationship between BMI and VO2Max in sports students. Methods: This quantitative descriptive study used an observational analytic design. The study involved a total of 30 subjects active university students (19-22 years) were purposively sampled. BMI was measured with TANITA BC-545N, and VO2Max  with the 12-minute Cooper test. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and Pearson correlation. Results: Mean BMI was 21.84 ± 2.52 kg/m². Most participants (70%) had normal BMI; 10% were underweight, 20% overweight. Mean VO2Max was 45.13 ± 4.93 mL/kg/min. Participants VO2Max, 53% were "good" and 23.5% "excellent".Normality test with Shapiro Wilk, p value BMI = 0.374 and p value VO2Max = 0.345 it mean (p> 0.05) then the data was normally distributed so that it was continued with parametric test is the Pearson Correlation test. A Pearson correlation showed a statistically significant negative relationship between BMI and VO2 Max (r = -0.372; p = 0.043), indicating a weak but inverse correlation. Conclusion: A significant negative relationship exists between BMI and VO2Max in sports students. Effective BMI management is crucial for preserving optimal cardiovascular fitness in this group.
