Abstract

This Community Service (PkM) aims to apply the Role Play learning method in Basic English Conversation. This learning model can foster students' enthusiasm for learning and create fun English learning. This learning method is believed to be able to increase interest in learning English, especially for children because this method involves motion games that create fun which is closely related to children. The Role Play method is a learning model that requires students to play one's character. This model is a technique that allows students to explore realistic conditions, situations or events by interacting with other students in a managed manner to enhance the experience. This Community Service activity began with a pre-survey/observation in April 2022 and the core of this activity is conducting teaching and learning activities for the children of Griya Yatim Dhuafa Permata Pamulang by implementing Role Play which was held in mid-May 2022. The PkM results show there is an increase in students' motivation and enthusiasm in learning English so that it is expected to be a reference for educators in creating new nuances in learning English so as to create fun classes and achieve maximum learning goals.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan untuk menerapkan Story Telling untuk meningkatkan kepercayaan diri dalam keterampilan berbicara. Story telling atau bercerita merupakan salah satu metode mengajar untuk berkomunikasi secara kreatif dalam pembelajaran Bahasa. Dalam pembelajaran bahasa, salah satu keterampilannya yaitu keterampilan berbicara. Metode ini dapat membantu siswa memperkaya kosakata dan memperoleh struktur bahasa yang baru. Melalui story telling, siswa dapat mengekspresikan ide, kekhawatiran, harapan dan impian mereka. Selain itu, bercerita memberikan peluang bagi siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa, berpikir, imajinasi dan penalaran yang tentunya akan memberi kesempatan untuk mengolah informasi dan mengembangkan kemampuannya dalam berkomunikasi. Kegiatan PkM ini dimulai dengan pra-survey / observasi pada bulan September 2022 di lokasi sasaran PkM yaitu di Rumah Asuh Yatim dan Dhuafa Yasmin, Rawakalong yang dilakukan secara berkesinambungan sehingga dapat menganalisis, mendiskusikan, dan memberikan pendampingan secara langsung terkait kegiatan pelatihan keterampilan berbicara dan inti pelaksanaan kegiatan PkM dilaksanakan pada tanggal 25-27 November 2022. Hasil PkM menunjukkan adanya peningkatan motivasi dan kepercayaan diri siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris yang sehingga diharapkan bisa menjadi salah satu referensi untuk pendidik dalam menciptakan atmosfer baru dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sehingga terciptanya kelas yang menyenangkan dan tercapainya tujuan pembelajaran dengan maksimal.

Abstract

Teaching writing to Informatics Engineering students has its uniqueness when it comes to what specific issue(s) the students are facing and how to cope with them. This study aims at finding out some feedback for the author’s previous teaching practices in writing a descriptive text which becomes the basis to give an exact intervention as well as to find out whether the intervention is able to improve the students’ skills in writing a descriptive text. This is exploratory action research to the 30 students of the third semester in the Informatics Engineering study program of a private university in Indonesia. To gain feedback on the previous instructional practices, a senior colleague is invited as a consultant and an open-ended questionnaire was distributed to the students. Some issues were found. After a deep discussion with the senior colleague, it is concluded that project-based activities could cope with the issues. To prove it, a writing test and open-ended interview were conducted. During the instructional practices, a collaborator was invited to observe using an observation sheet. The result revealed that project-based activities engaged the students and directed them in accomplishing the task. The test also showed improvement in students’ average scores. These findings proved that implementing project-based activities can improve the students’ skills in writing a descriptive text.  Keywords: Exploratory Action Research, Reflective Feedbacks, Project-Based Activities

Abstract

Along with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, this study aims to analyze the effectiveness of using DeepL Translate as a tool to improve students' English vocabulary mastery. The main focus of the study is to determine whether there is a significant difference between learning integrated with translation technology and conventional methods. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, involving 60 XII di SMK YPUI Parung who are divided into experimental and control groups. The important stages of the study include giving a pre-test, implementing learning for eight weeks where the experimental group uses DeepL Translate, and ending with a post-test and distributing a perception questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed using statistical tests to compare the results of the two groups. The results showed that the experimental group experienced an increase in vocabulary mastery that was statistically more significant than the control group. This finding is also supported by students' positive perceptions of the use of technology as a learning tool. It is concluded that the integration of DeepL Translate in a directed and structured manner is an effective strategy and can provide practical contributions for educators in developing technology-based language learning methods. ABSTRAKSeiring pesatnya perkembangan teknologi kecerdasan buatan, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas penggunaan DeepL Translate sebagai alat bantu untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa. Fokus utama penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat perbedaan signifikan antara pembelajaran yang diintegrasikan dengan teknologi penerjemah dan metode konvensional. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain quasi-experimental, melibatkan 60 siswa XII di SMK YPUI Parung yang dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Tahapan penting penelitian meliputi pemberian pre-test, implementasi pembelajaran selama delapan minggu di mana kelompok eksperimen menggunakan DeepL Translate, dan diakhiri dengan post-test serta penyebaran kuesioner persepsi. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan uji statistik untuk membandingkan hasil kedua kelompok. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kelompok eksperimen mengalami peningkatan penguasaan kosakata yang secara statistik lebih signifikan dibandingkan kelompok kontrol. Temuan ini juga didukung oleh persepsi positif siswa terhadap penggunaan teknologi sebagai alat bantu belajar. Disimpulkan bahwa integrasi DeepL Translate secara terarah dan terstruktur merupakan strategi yang efektif dan dapat memberikan kontribusi praktis bagi pendidik dalam mengembangkan metode pembelajaran bahasa berbasis teknologi.
