Abstract

Household organic waste is the largest contributor to total waste production. One effort that can be made to overcome problems caused by waste is through processing waste into eco-enzymes. Eco-enzyme is a multi-purpose liquid that can be used as a house cleaner, as well as as an effective natural fertilizer and pesticide. To make it easier to make eco-enzyme, it can be done using an eco-fermenter using simple technology. The eco-fermenter is designed using a semi-adiabatic principle with a volume of 60 liters, a kind of closed system that allows anaerobic fermentation to occur. Service activities were carried out in Mendalo Indah Village. Implementation of activities in the form of socialization and direct practice of making eco-enzyme using an eco-fermenter. The results of the activity showed that there was an increase in residents' understanding about optimizing the use of organic waste into eco-enzymes by using an eco-fermenter.

Abstract

Abstract

Coffee pulp is a by-product of coffee cherry processing. It has the potential to be used as a source of antioxidant activity. The dried coffee pulp is commonly referred to as cascara tea, which can be used as a functional drink. The coffee pulp contains caffeine, phenols, and chlorogenic acid that has antioxidant activity. Cascara tea can be fermented into kombucha as a functional drink that contains probiotics. In Jatimulyo Village, coffee cultivation and processing have been developed, but coffee skin waste is not used. Seeing the potential for processing coffee pulp waste into cascara and kombucha cascara tea products can provide added value (value added) to coffee pulp waste. The existence of added value to a product can increase the selling price in the market. The processing of coffee pulp waste into a product that is useful and has a sale value can be used as an effort to develop a creative economy. The results achieved from this activity are increasing the knowledge and skills of Jati Mulyo Village residents in utilizing coffee pulp waste into food products that are useful and have economic selling value.

Abstract

Peronema canescens Jack (commonly known as sungkai) is an endemic medicinal plant native to Sumatra and Kalimantan, known for its broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic, antihyperuricemic, and anti-inflammatory effects. These properties are largely attributed to its high content of bioactive phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Conventional extraction techniques typically utilize organic solvents such as ethanol or methanol, which raise concerns regarding toxicity, cost, and environmental sustainability. This study explores a green extraction strategy employing Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES), formulated from sodium acetate and glycerol at varying molar ratios, to optimize the recovery of antioxidant compounds from sungkai leaves. The extraction process involved maceration for 2 × 24 hours. FTIR analysis identified key functional group absorptions (O–H, C–H, C=C), with distinct spectral shifts and intensity variations, indicating interactions between NADES components and bioactive molecules. Among the four tested formulations, NADES 4 (sodium acetate:glycerol, 1:3) yielded the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents, and exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value of 32.30 ppm—classified as very strong and comparable to ascorbic acid. These results demonstrate that the compositional adjustment of NADES significantly influences solvent polarity and extraction efficiency, underscoring their promise as sustainable alternatives for the extraction of natural antioxidants.

Abstract

The Sungkai plant (Peronema canescens Jack) is a widely recognized medicinal plant in Indonesia, with its leaves recently gaining attention for their potential health benefits. This study explores the microencapsulation of ethanol extract from Sungkai leaves using three different coating materials—maltodextrin, inulin, and Arabic gum—at varying concentrations. The aim of this study was to identify the optimal microencapsulation formulation using these materials. Microencapsulation was performed using the extrusion method, and the best formulation was characterized by evaluating its physicochemical properties, morphology, and infrared (IR) spectrum. Antioxidant activity was measured using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The results showed that microencapsulant formulation A1 exhibited superior physicochemical properties compared to other formulations. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of sample A1 revealed a smooth surface with a slightly rounded shape and minimal wall folds or cracks, suggesting good stability. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed effective encapsulation of the ethanol extract. While the crude extract demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity, microencapsulation slightly reduced this activity. Among the microencapsulated samples, formulation A1 (using Arabic gum) retained the most antioxidant potential. In conclusion, formulation A1, utilizing Arabic gum as the coating material, was found to be the optimal microencapsulation formulation for the ethanol extract of Sungkai leaves.
