Abstract

The development of technology cannot be separated from the development of science, including the learning method. There is an elective course named Virtual Reality Architecture in Architecture Department of Petra Chrisitan University. This course focuses on the process of learning architecture at the stage of presenting and communicating ideas. The virtual technology used as a learning method includes three types of technology, animation, augmented reality and virtual reality. The three technologies are elaborated as a simulation method. The simplicity of its application can be seen in the support for hardware, software, and special devices used by students in their daily lives. This study aims to test the achievement of goals at the final level of learning. Students who have attended this lecture are then interviewed and observed, in relation to proving whether this simple virtual technology can be a supporter in the learning process in the architecture study program.

Abstract

This study presents a perspective where architecture can also designed as a model of archival representation in a historical urban space. It uses qualitative research-by-design and reflective architectural design methods, to consider Tunjungan Street's heritage as an exhibition space for contextual case for sustainable urban conservation through architectural thinking. The study identifies three principles: Movement as Program captures spatial movement to support walkability and more efficient use of resources; Heritage as Identity is about cultural character; and Urban Context as Sequence relates to social and ecological sustainability. Together, the principles structure design strategies that enable a reinterpretation of historical meaning-formally, in a material way—which represented progress for urban heritage interpretation through the lens of architectural programming. The study associated urban and sustainable growth to heritage design thinking through adaptive reuse, resilient heritage and socially engaged public places, making the case for the transformation of heritage design thinking as a model for the future. The study suggested a design-based model that positioned architectural programming as a strategic action for sustainable urban archiving, utilizing appropriation of exhibition strategies, and spatial sequencing as interpretations of the heritage of Tunjungan Street.

Abstract

This paper aims to reflect on the concept of minimalism as a design method and philosophy, far beyond the mere minimalist visual appearance commonly understood. This understanding responds to the trends in home design in Indonesia, where minimalism is often perceived as a design that emphasizes visual simplicity. However, the greatest potential of minimalism in modern architecture lies in the effort to simplify spatial design processes and methods with a reductive approach. This qualitative case study highlights the design of a simple residential house using the reduction approach. The connection between reduction and minimalism is reflected in various architectural design aspects, including reduction in building capacity, materiality, and design identity. The findings of this study propose the concept of reduction as a method closely related to various efficiency efforts. The ultimate goal is to expand the understanding of minimalism not merely as an aesthetic but as a reduction-based approach towards various aspects of sustainability in design.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper argues that the vertical stratification of formal, informal, and historical layers in Bandung contributes to the emergence of Junkspace, particularly around Gedung Sate, a heritage government building embedded in a rapidly urbanizing context. Drawing on Koolhaas’ concept of Junkspace and theories of spatial heterogeneity, the research explores how informal peripheries intersect with formal urban growth, creating porous hybrid spaces that defy conventional spatial order. Through qualitative spatial analysis, street-level observations, and time-lapse figure-ground studies from 2017 to 2025, the study reveals that informal structures adapt to, rather than displace, formal ones. This coexistence generates architectural incoherence marked by non-hierarchical, fused uses. The findings suggest that Gedung Sate is evolving into a form of Junkspace not merely through the erosion of spatial order but through active transformations that blend historical permanence with dynamic informal encroachments, reflecting the complex and layered realities of contemporary Bandung.

Abstract

Abstract

The Amahami Floating Mosque in Bima, Indonesia was analyzed as an example of resiliency in multi-dimensional adaptation through architecture and how this type of approach may provide a future path forward for sustainability, durability and efficiency with respect to modern mosque architecture influenced by local contexts. This research demonstrates three overall areas of essential integrative adaptation: social, spatial and environmental. With regards to social adaptation, the study emphasized the importance of community involvement beyond that of worship in order to preserve the identity of Bima as an architectural region; with spatial adaptation, the Muslim community incorporated the floating structure of the mosque into their site conditions as well as optimizing waterfront usage; and with environmental adaptation, the design of the mosque incorporated modular construction and structure to maximize the efficiency of material usage as well as to enhance natural light quality and ventilation. In conclusion, using these three integrative adaptations enables the mosque to be viewed as a resilient architectural prototype that links heritage with sustainability in an effort to promote adaptive design. While adaptive architecture is not limited to mosques serving only as places of worship, the results from this study suggest that there exists an opportunity to combine urban planning, eco-awareness and long-term resiliency.
