Abstract

Development and construction have neglected the balance of nature. This community service program aims to educate students in Nagari Singgalang, located around the Singgalang Tandikek Nature Tourism Park, through biodiversity education. This program targets school students, providing knowledge about endemic and protected species, especially the Sumatran striped rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri). This activity is also carried out using a more fun method to make it easier for students to understand. Activities include material delivery, coloring activities, making sculptures, and also face painting. Evaluation using pre-tests and post-tests showed an increase in participants' photography knowledge (the average score from initially low to increased, which indicates an increase in awareness and skills in documenting biodiversity. This program successfully raised students' awareness of the importance of their role in protecting the biodiversity around them

Abstract

Abstract

Crab trade in traditional markets is an important part of the fisheries distribution chain that reflects the utilization of marine resources by coastal communities. This study aims to identify the types of crabs (Brachyura) traded in traditional markets in Padang Barat District, Padang City, and to provide basic information for sustainable fisheries resource management. The research was conducted in February 2026 through direct observation at three traditional markets, namely Purus Fish Market, Raden Saleh Market, and Padang City Central Market. Data were collected through specimen documentation, species recording, and brief interviews with traders. The results of the study show that there are four species of crabs traded, all of which belong to the Portunidae family, namely Scylla serrata, Charybdis feriata, Portunus sanguinolentus, and Portunus pelagicus. The dominance of the Portunidae family indicates that swimming crabs are the main commodity in the marine product trade in the coastal area of West Sumatra. This study provides basic data on crab utilization in traditional markets and can support fisheries management, conservation of biological resources, and coastal economic development based on biodiversity.

Abstract

The use of photographic methods has become an alternative approach for monitoring the diversity of invertebrate species. However, this method has inherent limitations when applied to taxonomic studies. The present study aims to discuss the future challenges in the application of photographic methods and taxonomic study of invertebrates, in the case of dragonflies and water mites. This study is descriptive study, and the data collected by using photographic methods. The result of this study is collected six species, six genera and five families of dragonflies in the river of Guguak, Kayu Tanam Sub-district, Padang Pariaman District. However, we also found the water mites in certain species, then discussed its taxonomical problems. We concluded that the application of photographic methods may affect the quality of research outcomes, particularly in studies of invertebrate animals.
