Abstract

Literatures for children are regarded as fictions. Research on translation of literatures for children ranging from comics and fairytales to short stories has much been done. Meanwhile, research on translation of bible stories for children, which are listed in the non-fictions and belong to sensitive texts has not so far been conducted. This research aims at investigating the impact of translation techniques on the readability of 43 translated bible stories for children. It employed the qualitative research method. Content analysis, focus group discussion, and questionnaire were used to collect its data. The data were qualitatively analyzed. The research findings show that the translator tended to use translation techniques oriented to target language (TL), indicating that the translator strives to domesticate the translations so ideologically that they are high readable. The dominance of established equivalent, explicitation, variation, transposition translation techniques is proof to the high readability of the translations. However, few of the data did not have a high readability due to the use of technical terms and new vocabulary. Thus, prior to publication of a translation work, it should be read by ideal target readers as to deal with the two factors and other inhibiting ones. Keywords: Translated bible stories for children, translation technique, translation method, translation ideology, readabilityTEKNIK PENERJEMAHAN DAN DAMPAKNYA TERHADAP KETERBACAAN TERJEMAHAN CERITA ALKITAB ANAKAbstrakKarya sastra anak digolongkan sebagai cerita fiksi Penelitian terjemahan karya sastra anak seperti komik, legenda, dan cerita pendek telah banyak dilakukan.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Apraisal, Apresiasi, Brosur Pariwisata Bilingual, Semiotika AbstractAs a text, tourist brochure possesses linguistic and visual information. Abstract

Manipulation is a form of utterance that has hidden intention (illocutionary force), which is included in a branch of pragmatics. When performing manipulative speech, the speakers influence their victims’ minds so that they can respond the way the speakers want. Therefore, the speakers use manipulation strategies to achieve their intentions. This study aims to identify the manipulation strategies used by the characters in the WandaVision drama series and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie. It also examines the translation aspects of the subtitles from English to Indonesian based on translation techniques theory by Molina and Albir (2002), as well as the rule of translation quality assessment made by Nababan, et al (2012). Data analysis in this study uses the document analysis method and Focus Group Discussion involving three raters who are experts in pragmatics and translation theories. The results show that the characters in WandaVision drama series and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie used all 13 manipulation strategies, whose theory was initiated by George K. Simon (2010). Meanwhile, in terms of translation, the translator chose to be more orientated towards the target language, as proved by the dominance of techniques used, such as established equivalence, variation, implisitation, and paraphrase. The overall quality of the translation results is considered very good by the raters, and there are only two types of translation shifts found. The study hopes to serve as a reference for manipulation speech acts, offering valuable insights regarding the strategies to do manipulation and how the topic of manipulation in fictional works can be studied through a translation perspective.

Abstract

Background: Children’s literature, particularly bible stories, plays a crucial role in shaping children’s moral values. However, translation quality in children’s bible stories is often overlooked, impacting accuracy and acceptability. This study examines the translation techniques used in Classic Children’s Bible, assessing their influence on translation quality, particularly accuracy and acceptability.Methodology: This descriptive qualitative study is product-oriented research which was focused on 43 children’s Bible stories. Data were collected from Classic Children’s Bible and its Indonesian translation. They were analyzed through content analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis.Findings: The study found that some techniques influence translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The mostly used techniques (established equivalence, transposition, and modulation) contribute to accuracy and acceptability. In addition, it also found the translator’s effort in maintaining the original story through correction technique. However, accuracy and acceptability are considered to gain a nearly perfect score because of several techniques (discursive creation and deletion). Conclusion: This study confirms the crucial role of translation techniques in ensuring accuracy and acceptability in children’s Bible story translations. Translation techniques such as established equivalence, transposition, and modulation were effective while discursive creation, deletion, and reduction reduced accuracy.Originality: The translation of children’s Bible stories has been studied primarily in terms of methods, techniques, and quality. Howeverseveral studies examined some linguistic parts, not the whole story. In filling the gap, this study investigated the translation techniques in 43 children’s Bible story translations as the whole story.

Abstract

Translation is a crucial aspect of cross-cultural communication, which involves not only the conversion of words from one language to another but also the preservation of cultural nuances and literary elements, which are pivotal to maintaining the literary and communicative integrity of a text across languages. Translation, as a critical aspect of cultural communication, is critical for maintaining the beauty and intended meaning of the original author. In this study, a novel titled Kesatria, Putri, dan Bintang Jatuh, was translated from Bahasa Indonesia into English using six different translation techniques. The findings show that modulation, paraphrase, and established equivalent do not impact accuracy, acceptability, and readability, as they effectively preserved the original meaning. These findings highlight the importance of flexibility and creativity in translation, as translators must navigate cultural and linguistic differences while striving to preserve the original intent and emotional resonance of the source material. This study aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on effective literary translation practices and enhance the appreciation of metaphorical language across cultures.

Abstract

This study examines the translation of expressive speech acts in the Netflix series The Witcher, focusing on the protagonist Geralt of Rivia and the antagonist Cahir Mawr Dyffryn. Expressive speech acts—such as apology, gratitude, condolence, lament, congratulation, protest, and praise—play a crucial role in conveying emotions and shaping character identity. A total of 158 utterances were analyzed from English–Indonesian subtitle pairs using qualitative descriptive methods, supported by translation quality assessment based on accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Findings reveal distinct pragmatic patterns: Geralt frequently uses empathetic expressions like protest, apology, and regret, reflecting moral engagement and interpersonal sensitivity, while Cahir predominantly employs praise and boasting, emphasizing authority and self-image. Analysis of 700 translation instances shows that established equivalence (56.14%) and variation (17.29%) were the most common techniques, supporting naturalness, readability, and cultural appropriateness. Techniques such as modulation, paraphrase, amplification, and compensation were applied to preserve pragmatic force and emotional nuance. Overall, translation quality was high, with mean scores of 2.84 (accuracy), 2.76 (acceptability), and 2.89 (readability). This study contributes a novel perspective by linking expressive speech acts with character function and translation strategies in subtitling. The findings emphasize the importance of selecting translation techniques that maintain pragmatic intent, emotional impact, and character portrayal, offering guidance for audiovisual translators and informing future research on cross-cultural narrative translation.
