Abstract

This paper discusses some performing arts and rituals that carry the environmental theme in Jember. Artists and village governments respond creatively to environmental problems by creating several multi-form events, combining performances and certain rituals. We will use postcolonial ecocriticism as a theoretical framework to discuss some of their produced show events. Postcolonial ecocriticism emphasizes analysis to reveal how cultural texts present current ecological problems as a legacy of colonialism in aesthetic works that can function as advocacy and activism. The results of this study show that the performances and rituals develop critical awareness regarding environmental threats and problems in Jember and Indonesia. They bring the topic of the environment to invite the community to jointly maintain the sustainability of the human environment and criticize government policies to legitimize the destruction of nature in the name of development.

Abstract

Film combines narrative and cinematic elements, with mise-en-scene playing a crucial role in shaping visual storytelling. This research examines how mise-en-scene contributes to humor in The Big 4 by Timo Tjahjanto, analyzing aspects such as setting, costumes, makeup, lighting, and staging. Using Bordwell et al.'s mise-en-scene theory and Arthur Asa Berger's humor techniques—Language, Logic, Identity, and Action—this qualitative study divides the film into four scenes to identify dominant humor techniques. Examples include dialogue-based teasing (Language), absurd situations (Logic), identity contrasts, such as Alpha's transformation (Identity), and physical comedy, like Dina’s poisoned antics (Action). The findings highlight how visual elements and humor techniques work together to enhance storytelling and character development, demonstrating the integration of mise-en-scene and comedic elements in creating an engaging cinematic experience. This study emphasizes the role of mise-en-scene in supporting humor and enriching audience engagement.

Abstract

Film is a medium that represents various socio-cultural realities, enabling the visualization and depiction of social issues, one of which is the culture of patriarchy. Patriarchy is a term used to describe a social system where power, control, and authority are primarily in the hands of men or male figures. Patriarchy is a central theme in the film Kartini. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reveal and understand the hidden meanings that depict the visualization of patriarchal culture in the film Kartini. This study employs a qualitative research method, utilizing John Fiske's semiotic analysis approach. The findings of this research indicate that patriarchal culture is visualized through John Fiske's three codes of encoding, including 1) reality, 2) representation, and 3) ideology, demonstrating that patriarchal culture remains influential in affecting women's lives.
