Abstract

This article probes whether the implementation of the caning sentence in Aceh may reach its objective of deterrent effect given the way the execution conducted. From the field observation, the flogging was not much different from entertainment. The mass gathered in one place to watch the execution; they include children, street vendors, researchers, and journalists. There was a stage, VIP seats for guests, loudspeakers, administrative arrangements, and the caning punishment procession. Using a qualitative research approach with an in-depth interview method, it seeks to understand how the community involved in the caning execution was and how the government was designed the sentence as such and why.  It finds that while the government saw the caning law as the implementation of Islamic sharia in Aceh, the people perceived its execution more as entertainment. The government has used the caning sentence execution as a demonstration of power, often for a political gain, because it emphasizes its presence not only as of the guardian of shari’a for Acehnese but also as a devout politician who keeps his political promises. Yet, little of this punishment deterrent effect conveyed to the society due to the way it was staged and executed. Keywords: Qanun Jinayat, Aceh, Caning Punishment, Stage, Entertainment, Deterrent Effect.

Abstract

This paper analyzed how several mosques as a public space are not friendly to one gender group. Mosques as public spaces should be accessible to everyone and must accommodate the needs of all gender groups. This study seeks to see how the spatial arrangement that is not friendly to women impacts the comfort of women to worship in the mosque. In addition, this study also tries to analyze mosques in Banda Aceh, which are considered gender-responsive. This study uses qualitative methods with in-depth interviews and uses gender planning theory as an analytical tool. This study found several findings. First, the comfort and discomfort related to the arrangement of space and facilities are experienced by female congregations and male congregations. Second, assumptions that affect spatial planning and facilities have discriminated against one gender group. Third, mosques in Aceh are generally intended for men; this results in the layout of the mosque not accommodating the needs of women.

Abstract

Ulee Lheue Beach is one of the marine tourism sites in Banda Aceh. Its appearance, apart from attracting visitors to enjoy the beauty of the shore, also has consequences for piles of garbage thrown carelessly by the visitors to the shoreline which has an impact on environmental damage. In addition, the visitors tend to heed the government’s appeal to strictly commit to health protocols such as social distancing, gathering prohibition, and wearing masks while they visit the tourism spots. Therefore, this community outreach sought to map the knowledge of the tourists about waste and its impact on tourism sites and its relation to the dangers of Covid-19. This service employed mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative). The survey results showed that the visitors have fairly good knowledge regarding the dangers of waste and Covid-19 yet still uninternalized in their daily attitudes. Thus, the service team provides education through leaflets and videos on Youtube channels, hoping that the visitors would have higher commitment towards the environmental hygiene and health protocols at tourist sites.

Abstract

Abstract

Become part of the public space in Banda Aceh, the coffee shop should be friendly to male and female gender. Because after the tsunami, women were in a coffee shop as a form of public involvement in public place have previously dominated by men. Even so, almost no coffee shop in the city of Banda Aceh that separate male and female toilets. Not to mention the condition of the toilets which tend to be clean and comfortable to use. It is not only forgotten by the management but also by women themselves. When referring to the concept of the concept of gender equality and gender planning then this condition could occur due to a lack of understanding of gender equality from the manager of a coffee shop or on the women themselves. Although the observations made, women tend to feel uncomfortable because of this issue, but they do not know how to communicate with the manager. As a conclusion that the coffee shop is not reserved for women. Even if women have become part of the coffee shop, the conclusions that coffee shop is not friendly to the female gender.
