Abstract

Target community of this activity was forest conservative women who produced various food products including jam, syrup, “dodol” cake, and sticks whose qualities needed to be improved. It was observed that the “kecombrang” jam and syrup brought up different colors for each production run. The unpleasant taste was identified in the dodol cake. The jackfruit stick lacked crunchiness which might be due to improper drying. The objective of this community service activity was a technology transfer consisting of three topics: (1) Quality control in material handling to avoid browning of raw material (2) Quality control of food processing to improve the quality of resulting products, and (3) Introduction of food drying utilizing a YSD-UNIB12 solar dryer. The activity included: meeting coordination and material preparation, counseling, and interactive dialogue. The result indicated that 70% mastered the delivery topics and 30% understood some parts of them. Participants were very enthusiastic in participating in the counseling conducted by the team.

Abstract

The Women's Environmental Care Group (KPPL) of Sumber Jaya and Sejahtera in Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu, faces challenges in post-harvest handling of fresh products, particularly jackfruit and avocado, which serve as the primary raw materials for their processed goods. Without proper handling techniques, the quality of raw materials declines, affecting the quality of processed products. Therefore, training on Appropriate Technology (TTG) for post-harvest handling is needed to enhance the quality of their processed products. The goal of this initiative is to provide KPPL with knowledge on post-harvest handling so that their processed products can be of higher quality and more competitive. The methods include workshops focused on harvesting, storage, transportation, and packaging of fresh products. Training is conducted through hands-on sessions with KPPL members, involving students as activity supporters. Results indicate improved understanding among KPPL members in proper harvesting and storage techniques, which has led to extended shelf life and better quality of fresh products. Overall, the initiative has successfully raised awareness within KPPL on product quality, marketability, and raw material management for processed products. In conclusion, this TTG training has proven effective in enhancing KPPL’s post-harvest handling quality and improving the competitiveness of their processed products in the market.

Abstract

Monitoring and assessment of water quality in subwatershed areas are essential to support sustainable watershed management, pollution control, and protection the aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to assess the water quality status of the Tiku Subwatershed using the Pollution Index (PI) approach based on 12 key physicochemical parameters. Water samples were collected from three monitoring stations representing upstream, midstream, and downstream segments in September 2024. The analyzed parameters included dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, and heavy metals. Laboratory analyses were carried out following standard procedures, and the PI was calculated according to the Decree of the Indonesian Minister of Environment No. 115 of 2003. The results showed that PI values ranged from 1.15 to 3.90, indicating that all sampling locations were classified as lightly polluted. These findings highlight the need for targeted pollution control measures, particularly in upstream and midstream areas, to maintain water quality and support the sustainable functioning of aquatic ecosystems in the Tiku Subwatershed.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to (1) determine factors that affect rice farmers decision to use hand tractor or not (conventional), (2) analyze the productivity of rice using hand tractors and conventional technique. (3) Calculate the income of rice farmers that used tractors and conventional. The number of samples taken were 41 rice farmers who used hand tractors in the village of Rimbo Recap and the ones who used conventional technique 29 persons in Watas Marga village. The systems of farming was the same both in Watas Marga village and in Rimbo Recap. Sampling was conducted by interview using questionnaire to collect primer data and secunder data. The method of research was survey using the formula Slovin. The result of study concluded that the land space and perception of labor significantly affected the farmer’s decision to use the hand tractors, while the perception of farmers on hand tractors did not affect significantly on the farmer’s decision to use hand tractors in agricultural land preparation. Factors that affected the productivity were seeds 4.569 t count > t table of 2.564 and labor 8.936 t count > t table of 2.464t count > t table 2.042 and labor 8.936 t count > t table of 2.464 with 99% confidence level. Insectiside had significant effect on productivity of rice at 95% level. The value of t count was 2.479 > t table (2.042). T test had a negative value. Dummy showed decrease in productivity by 0.2077% if the farmer did not use a hand tractor. Incomes of farmers who used both tractors and conventional technique showed no significant difference. Income of farmers who used tractors was Rp. 9.014.727/MT or Rp. 11. 302.316/Ha and farmers' income whoutilize conventional technique was Rp. 9.041.365/MT or Rp. 11.349.945/Ha. The calculation results based on different incomes concluded that change in rice farming systems did not significantly effect on income benefit

Abstract

Rice is a strategic staple food whose productivity is influenced by land suitability. This study aims to determine the level of land suitability class for irrigated lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the Kelingi Irrigation Area, Tugumulyo District, Musi Rawas Regency. The study was conducted using a survey method that refers to the level of limiting factors reviewed from land characteristics. Data from field observations and laboratory analysis data were matched with the criteria for land suitability classes for irrigated lowland rice. The actual land suitability class for lowland rice crops is moderately suitable (S2) covering an area of 5,225 ha (51.41%), marginally suitable (S3) covering an area of 4,626 ha (45.52%), while marginally suitable (S3) with a slope of >8% covering an area of 312 ha (3.07%) is recommended for annual crops. The main limiting factors are water availability, land slope class and soil fertility. The limiting factor of soil fertility, still allows for further improvement of its suitability class, by providing balanced fertilizer and to increase the soil pH, agricultural lime can be provided (low input), to overcome the slope of the land, light terracing can be made (medium input), while to overcome water shortages, irrigation channels can be built/rehabilitated.

Abstract

This study examines how working together in a group affects the critical thinking skills of junior high school students. The reason for this study is because students' critical thinking skills are not very strong, especially because their learning is too dependent on teachers. Collaborative learning is thought to help students be more engaged, talk to each other, and better understand and assess information. This study used a descriptive qualitative method, collecting data through questionnaires given to 27 ninth-grade students. The tools used check things like how active students are in the discussion, how well they can explain their ideas clearly, as well as how often they think about and check the ideas and information they hear. The results showed that most students liked the group learning method and believed that their critical thinking skills had improved after participating in the activity. In addition, students feel more confident in expressing opinions, are more able to listen to the views of their peers, and are more likely to understand the material being discussed. These findings confirm that working together in a group is an effective learning strategy to enhance critical thinking while encouraging students' active participation in the classroom.

Abstract

Coffee pulp is typically discarded by local communities without further utilization. In Babakan Bogor, Kepahiang Regency, Bengkulu Province. The coffee pulp has not yet been used productively, primarily due to the community’s limited knowledge and skills regarding coffee by-product processing. The objective of this community service activity was to provide participants with knowledge about the nutritional value of coffee pulp and the processing stages required to produce cascara. The methods employed included (1) preparation through coordination between the community service team and the target audience, and (2) an educational extension approach for material delivery. The implementation of this program was carried out successfully, with a high level of enthusiasm from participants. The activity has contributed to improving the community’s knowledge of coffee by-product utilization, specifically in processing coffee pulp into cascara tea.
