Abstract

This study investigated the effect of using folktales on students’ listening achievement at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kendari. This study applied a Pre-experimental research design with one group pretest and posttest. The population   of   this   research   was   the   eleventh-   grade students of senior high school in the academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this research was all eleventh-grade students of MAN I Kendari which consists of 30 students. The  Technique  of sampling  used  by  the  researcher  was total sampling. The result showed there was a significant effect of using folktales on students’ listening achievement. It  was  proven  based  on  descriptive  analysis,  the  mean score of pretest was 48.4 and the posttest means score was 75.2.  Moreover,  the  result  of  hypothesis  testing  showed that the mean value of pretest and posttest was 26.7 and the standard deviation was 20.7, while the standard error means was 3.78. The sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 which smaller than (<0.05), it can be concluded that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted which means there was an effect of using Folktales in teaching Listening at Eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kendari. Keywords: listening, folktales

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out whether there is a significant effect of Total Physical Response (TPR) method on students’ speaking achievement. The research question addressed was “is there  any  significant  effect  of  Total  Physical  Response  (TPR) method on students’ speaking achievement?” The design of study was quasi experimental design by using two classes, namely experimental class and control class. This study involved the ninth grade students of SMPN 1 Kabawo who were registered in the academic year 2017/2018. The instrument of the study was oral test where the students performed in front of the class orally about how to make a glass of ice lemon in 3 minutes. The study used independent sample t- test to analyze the data. The result showed that the students’ speaking score in experimental class (3.12) was higher than students’ speaking score in control class (2.23). The result of hypothesis testing revealed that the level of significant was 0.00. It means that there was a significant difference on students’ speaking achievement after being taught by using total physical response. Keywords: Speaking, Teaching Speaking, Total Physical Response

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of keeping vocabulary notebooks on students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade in SMPN 2 Raha. The purpose of this study is to find out a significant effect after keeping vocabulary notebook  on  students’  vocabulary  achievement.  This study applied quantitative research design. This study used vocabulary notebook as a treatment in learning process for the students. The subject of this study was second grades students of SMPN 2 Raha who were registered in academy year 2017-2018. The technique of taking sample of study was purposive sampling. The sample of this study was class VIII2  as an experimental class and class VIII1  as a control class. The instrument of this study was vocabulary test consist of 30 numbers, the result showed that there was not a significant effect of keeping vocabulary notebooks on students’ vocabulary . It was not proved with the improvement of students were the students more active in the classroom rather than the teacher. Students can discover the new words by themselves on the learning activities. the result of students’ vocabulary test was supported with the mean score in post-test of experimental class is higher than the mean score in the post-test of control class. The mean score for the post-test in experimental class was 82.15 and the mean score for post-test in control class was 79.36. but the data was not distributed normally, the analysis of the data was used the non parametric analysis and the result of Mann Whitney non parametric analysis, the value of Sig  2-tailed  =  0.57  with  α  0.05.  it  means  that  H0   is accepted. It is because the value of Asymp sig 2-tailed is above the alpha (a) value. This result showed that there was not a significant effect of using vocabulary notebooks on   students’   vocabularu   achievement   at   the   second grades in SMP Negeri 2 Raha. Keywords: Effect,Vocabulary Notebooks,Learning Activities,Vocabulary Achievement.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effect of show and tell method on students’ speaking skill at the first grade of SMA Negeri 1 Bone Muna. The researcher applied a quasi-experimental design to find out whether there was a significant effect of show and tell method on students speaking skill. The population of this research was the first grade with the total of the students were 46 students. The sample taken by using cluster random sampling and the total sample was 23 students in the experimental class and 23 students in the control class. The researcher collected the data by giving pre-test in two classes, giving treatment in the experimental class by using show and tell method and conventional method in control class, and giving post-test in two classes to know students’ speaking skill after taught by show and tell method compared with the result in control class that taught by conventional method. The instrument of this research was an oral test. The data were analysed by using descriptive statistics and an inferential statistic that is counting in SPSS 16.0. To examine the hypothesis the researcher used an independent sample t-test. The result shows that students’ mean score of post-test in experimental class is raising. The factor that makes this study is raising because of the media used when students speak namely personal object or students' favourite object so students’ can express and develop their ideas based on these objects. Besides, show and tell method requires students to speak in front of the class so that students have the opportunity to practice their speaking. Therefore, show and tell method has a significant effect on students’ speaking skill at the first grade of SMA Negeri 1 Bone.

Abstract

Students' speaking performance can be affected by the factors that come from performance conditions (time pressure, planning), standard of performance and amount of support), affective factors (such as motivation, confidence, and anxiety), listening ability, topical knowledge, and feedback during speaking activities. The purpose of this study was to analyze, describe and determine factors affecting students' quality in speaking performance of the third semester of Halu Oleo University. This study employed a quantitative design. The data was collected by using a close-ended questionnaire. All the items questionnaire was analyzed by using SPSS version 20. The population was students of the third semester of Halu Oleo University in the academic year 2016/2017. The samples were 62 students of the English Department, which were taken by purposive sampling. The result of this research were factors affecting students' difficulties in speaking performance of the third-grade students of Halu Oleo University showed that from five factors namely affective factors, linguistic factors, performance condition, listening ability factors, and feedback during the speaking activities. The result found that, the dominant category or the high percentage on factors affecting students' difficulties in speaking performance was listening ability factors. Where listening ability factors included grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. It concluded that the students feel difficulty in speaking performance.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating the effect of Microsoft office PowerPoint on student competence in writing descriptive text. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. This research used a pre-experimental with One-Group Pretest-Posttest design (class VIII). The total sample was 30 students which were selected by using the probability sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a writing test that focused on two aspects of writing namely vocabulary and language use. The researcher collected the data by giving pre-test and post-test to know students writing competence before and after treatment of Microsoft office PowerPoint had been applied. The researcher used Microsoft excel 2010 and SPSS 16.0 to analyze the result of this research. The finding showed that there was an effect of Microsoft office PowerPoint on students' writing competence. The result of the descriptive analysis showed the mean score of pre-test was 51.76 and the mean score of post-test was 79.70. The inferential statistics showed that there was a significant effect of Microsoft Office PowerPoint on students' writing competence. Hence, teaching and learning writing use Microsoft office PowerPoint can be one of the effective methods for upgrading students‟ writing competence

Abstract

This study researched the correlation between the students’ national English examination and their integrated intensive course (IIC) scores at English Department of Halu Oleo University academic year of 2016/2017. The national examination test determined the English score of students in senior high schools based on 3 language skills; reading, listening and writing, while IIC test determined the 4 language skills; reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as vocabulary and grammar. The difference of test score may raised score variations in which students who got good scores in national examination might got even worse score in IIC. Moreover, different types of tests, where some senior high schools that carry out national examination through paper based and some other through computer based test also may impact the result of the test. The researcher used product moment correlation to analysis the correlation both of the score. The result of hypothesis shows that there is a significant correlation between the students’ national English examination and their integrated intensive course (IIC) scores at English Department of Halu Oleo University academic year of 2016/2017. It was indicated by the result of analysis of r-product moment score (rxy = 0.309) which was higher than r-table = 0.199.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out whether there is a significant effect of using Quora application on students’ higher-order thinking skills at eleventh-grade students of SMAN 4 Kendari. This study was a quantitative pre-experimental method with one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample was students at XI IPA 1 class consisting of 36 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used reading test which consisted of 19 items in essay forms. The finding of this study showed that there is a significant effect of using Quora application on students' higher-order thinking skills. It was proven by the increase in students’ mean scores from pretest to posttest. The mean score for the pretest was 58.69 and standard deviation of 9.558 and the post-test was 75.36 and a standard deviation of 8.232. It can be seen that students' higher-order thinking skills were improved after being taught by using Quora application. Furthermore, this study proved that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted with the value of Sig (2 tailed) 0.000 which was lower than the alpha value α (0.05) or sig (2 tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Quora application on students’ higher-order thinking skills at SMAN 4 Kendari.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding the types of students' academic cheating found by the English teachers in e-learning at SMKN 6 Kendari and to finding the effort of English teachers to overcome students’ academic cheating in e-learning at SMKN 6 kendari. This research used descriptive qualitative research design and used case study research method. The subject in this research were three English teachers at SMKN 6 kendari. The instruments of this research were the researcher as a human instrument, an interview guide, and documentation. Techniques of data collection in this research were deep interviews and document review. The results of this research show that; types of students’ academic cheating that English teachers found in e-learning were plagiarism, wrong cooperation, and cheating during the exam. The efforts made by the English teacher in overcoming student academic cheating in e-learning were giving warnings to students, giving motivation, limiting the time, and changing the questions.
