Abstract

Abstract

The background that underlies this activity is that the cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea in the field of education has opened up opportunities for Indonesian students to continue their studies at several universities in Korea, such as Hankuk University for Foreign Studies and Busan University for Foreign Studies. However, Indonesian students in Korea face challenges in maintaining their health, especially dental and oral health. Language barriers and high treatment costs are the main obstacles in accessing dental health services. Answering existing problems, activities are carried out with methods in the form of community service in the form of health classes and health communication rooms. The targeted goal is to increase the knowledge and awareness of Indonesian students' health in Korea. The course of the activity includes need assessment, preparation of educational materials, implementation of health classes and introduction of teledentistry, as well as evaluation of activities. The results showed that the activity succeeded in increasing students' understanding of the importance of dental and oral care and the use of remote health communication technology. This activity also strengthens the academic network between the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta and universities in Korea. It is hoped that this activity will become a model of sustainable international service that can be imitated in various other countries.

Abstract

Absorbable sutures are a type of suture material that undergo degradation and are gradually absorbed by body tissues over a certain period, eliminating the need for manual removal. To provide an understanding of the absorption characteristics of absorbable sutures, which is essential for clinicians in selecting the most appropriate material for each oral surgical procedure. This study is a qualitative research in the form of a literature review using secondary data collected in April 2026 from three scientific databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. Articles were retrieved from various online scientific journal sources using the keywords “absorbable sutures,” “absorption rate,” “oral surgery,” and “dental surgery sutures.” The absorption rate of absorbable sutures is a crucial factor influencing wound healing outcomes in oral surgical procedures. Unlike other body tissues, the oral cavity has a unique and more aggressive environment, characterized by high moisture due to saliva, the presence of various enzymes (proteases and esterases), fluctuations in pH and temperature, and a high level of microbial colonization. Fast-absorbing sutures, such as polyglactin, are suitable for mucosal tissues as they reduce inflammatory reactions and improve patient comfort. However, suture selection must still be tailored to the wound condition and the required tissue strength.

Abstract

Pain is one of the main obstacles in tooth extraction procedures; therefore, effective local anesthesia is required to improve patient comfort during the procedure. Lidocaine is the most commonly used local anesthetic in dentistry, while articaine has increasingly been used because it is claimed to have better tissue diffusion ability and a longer duration of action. This systematic review aimed to determine the effectiveness of articaine compared with lidocaine as a local anesthetic in tooth extraction procedures. The method used was the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) with article searches conducted through the ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Scopus databases using the keywords “Lidocaine AND Articaine AND Tooth Extraction.” The inclusion criteria included randomized controlled trial (RCT) articles, articles published in English between 2015 and 2025, and studies discussing the use of lidocaine and articaine in tooth extraction procedures. From the search results, 797 articles were identified, and after the selection process, 6 articles met the inclusion criteria. The review results showed that articaine has several advantages over lidocaine, including no need for additional injection volume, faster onset of action, longer anesthetic duration, and lower intraoperative and postoperative pain complaints. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that articaine is a more effective local anesthetic than lidocaine for tooth extraction procedures.
