Abstract

Being an Atheist is always an unpopular choice in the middle of high religious context society. The stigma and pressure from religious groups forced Atheists in Indonesia to hide their identity in public generally and when taking care of the affairs of state administration. This research utilized Communication Privacy Management and Dramaturgy Theory alongside the phenomenology perspective to reveal how Atheists in Indonesia live their "beliefs" in their not-so-friendly environment. The results showed that they generally presented themselves as religious in front of their family by pretending to practice religious rituals, contributing to their special personal branding for the families. Meanwhile, in other social environments, such as friendship, they could be freer to present themselves as they were, although they still had to manage private information about their Atheist identity.

Abstract

Indonesia's challenge in leveraging the USA-China rivalry for economic advancement requires a nuanced approach, considering its passive foreign policy, strategic dependence, and domestic development challenges. The country aims to enhance recovery prospects by strengthening food and financial security, rebuilding regional growth, and connectivity, while also accelerating the transformation towards an inclusive and participatory digital economy. The study aims to explore how Indonesia can strategically leverage the USA-China rivalry in the Indo-Pacific to enhance its economic opportunities and examine the implications of the rivalry on its economic growth and development. This study employs a qualitative research design, analyzing, and interpreting data from literature reviews. The results show Indonesia's economic growth and development are intricately linked to its approach to leveraging the USA-China rivalry, managing infrastructure dependencies, and promoting the digital economy. To ensure sustainable progress and poverty reduction, well-designed policies and a multi-pronged approach are essential. Balancing relations with both the USA and China will be pivotal in attracting investment and expanding trade while avoiding undue external influence. Emphasizing digital infrastructure, talent, economy, and government sectors can also enhance the digital economy and contribute to Indonesia's long-term success on the global stage. Finally, Indonesia must navigate geopolitical complexities, its passive foreign policy, and domestic challenges to fully capitalize on the benefits of the USA-China rivalry while safeguarding its interests and promoting regional stability.

Abstract

Crimes against humanity in the form of human rights violations in Uganda was caused by internal conflict which was triggered by Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The conflict started in 1987 and lasted over 20 years. Not only in Uganda, LRA also attacked three neighboring countries, such as Republic Democratic Congo, South Sudan, and Central Africa. During the conflict, LRA caused more than 100,000 deaths, abducted more than 60,000 children, and displaced more than 2.5 million civilians. Due to the prolonged internal conflict, the Ugandan government was considered to fail to protect its citizens thus the international community intervened to overcome this problem, as conducted by the United States. This paper attempted to reveal the U.S. efforts to overcome cases of human rights violations by LRA group in Uganda and the impact of such efforts to the protection of civilians. The research reveals the case of human rights violations in Uganda can be overcome after efforts had been carried out by the U.S. and supported with development and economy recovery for areas and social and healthy recovery for citizens of Uganda.

Abstract

The research discussed that the woman dalang was still not considered equal to male ones in shadow puppetry performances despite being developed in the Mataram Kingdom era. Various reasons caused this phenomenon, such as the audience's preferences for men's dalangs. To respond to this condition, an all-women's karawitan community, Rara Asmoro, emerged in Surakarta to give support to many women who love wayang arts. This community sought to embrace these women's potential to then jointly promote and strengthen their skills in the field of Javanese art and culture. The research attempted to analyze the organizational culture formed in the Rara Asmoro community as an effort to empower women in the Javanese wayang art. The research applied a qualitative descriptive method to obtain a complete picture of the problem by interviewing the leader of Rara Asmoro and its four members. It finds a significance of the leader in empowering its members, fostering their confidence and talents, and expanding their opportunities for networking within the Wayang world. The dynamics of the organizational culture in the community allow everyone to switch roles: as a dalang, as a karawitan player, and as a singer, which opens opportunities for all members to have added value and skills. Conflicts are always resolved in a democratic and respectful manner, in which the leader keeps all of her members close as a family. However, internally, concertive control has not been fully implemented in the organization as it is still centralized on the leader.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate whether the impact of hoaxes to an institution is as significant as those to an individual. Besides that, it also to find the impact of the hoax spreading to Indonesian people, especially viewed from the business perspective. The hoax issue investigated in this research is more related to the political ones, but it was viewed from the business perspective, especially business-to-business (B2B). This was a gap in the body of literature that the researchers have found. For this research, researcher utilized mixed methods The first is descriptive qualitative with case study approach where researcher conducted an in-depth interview to several informants, such as business owners and marketing officers from several companies that experienced the effect of hoaxes. The second is quantitative research method with secondary data gathered from the internet. The data analysis showed that hoax issues that hit an institution or company did not have a significant effect compared to those that hit an individual such as a public figure. The researches deliberately chose this hoax topic because it has been popular recently and also the researchers believed that the research using business point of view has not been widely done. Most of the research done today is hoaxes research from political perspective.

Abstract

The konjac plant is thought to be a nutritious meal that is good for both beauty and health. Konjac exports from Indonesia to other countries grew as a result in 2020. Nevertheless, a sharp fall was observed at the end of 2021, despite the fact that many Indonesian farmers had shifted to Konjac plants. The researcher will continue the research series with Konjac plant objects in 2022 because there are so many questions and rumors surrounding this plant. The purpose of this study is to interpret the meaning of YouTube accounts that talk about konjac plants. By generating codes from all the words collected from the 30 YouTube accounts examined, the study employed a qualitative content analysis methodology. Three code frameworks were identified as being relevant to the Konjac problem: Konjac, the Government, and Export. The Government of Indonesia appealed the findings of these three regulations regarding the attitudes of farmers who support and oppose the growing of konjac. The Indonesian government is viewed as being unprepared to deal with both the farmers themselves and the global market, and thus disregards the quality of Konjac crops for export. Conclusion: In order to improve the quality of products that will be exported and brand Konjac plants for the global market, coordination and engagement between farmers and the Indonesian government are required, as well as the involvement of academics.

Abstract

Drawing on an online meditation community mentored by Samanera Abhisarano in Indonesia, this study explores how the members use digital media to engage in religious practices and teachings. The data were collected through multisited digital ethnographic fieldwork conducted from December 2021 to July 2022. During this period, we immersed ourselves in the WhatsApp group and the Zoom virtual room of the community. In addition to participating in their online activities and interviewing five community members remotely, we conducted on-site fieldwork at the temple where the mentor lives and organized a face-to-face in-depth interview with him. Employing Hjarvard’s theory of mediatization of religion, we analyzed how Buddhist teaching and practices were mediatised through the intensive use of digital media in religious environments. We argue that digital media have, to some extent, transformed the routine of this community in terms of performing religious activities. The finding supports Hjarvard’s argument that mediatization of religion is a process in which the media have taken over some roles of religious authority and transformed the way society interacts with religion.

Abstract

The Ruwatan tradition in Javanese culture involves a  sacred performing art called Murwakala. This performance is carried out individually or collectively to self-purify, ask for forgiveness, or ward off disaster for individuals of various ages and social classes. Individuals categorized as Sukerta (bring bad luck, are dirty, or have disturbances) are considered not yet pure and, therefore, require a ruwatan (purification) ritual. Given the intensive use of symbols in the ruwatan ritual, understanding the messages conveyed through the performance art and ritual becomes problematic. This study aims to investigate how modern audiences interpret the ruwatan ritual. Using the theory of Symbolic Interaction, this study adopts a qualitative method. Data collection is done through observation, document studies, and in-depth interviews. Informants are the ruwat puppeteer, ruwat participants, and audiences. The findings of this research demonstrate that for the mass ruwatan tradition and Murwakala performance to maintain their relevance and significance in contemporary society, the symbolic meanings embedded within these practices must be conveyed more explicitly to both participants and the broader public. Ruwatan participants give meaning to ritual symbols and actions according to their cultural background, religion, and personal experience as an interpretation of the performance given by the ruwat puppeteer. Moreover, the study highlights the necessity of communicative innovation, such as implementing informational media, to support the continued vitality and relevance of ruwatan rituals in modernity.
