Abstract

Despite having negative content, gossip and backstage talks can also be a medium to learn about differences and provide information for the rest of the community. Furthermore, backstage talks not only contain mere gossip, but also reflect the hidden transcripts by individuals who perceived themselves to be less powerful than the power holders. Given the phenomena, this paper attempted to investigate the online backstage talks between community members and their face-to-face interaction with the object of their gossips by using the concepts of Goffman’s dramaturgy, gossip, and hidden transcript. The study found that Goffman’s (1959) concept of performance, while useful, could not fully work in analyzing deviant behaviors. This study further confirms Wittek and Wielers’ (1998) affirmation that coalition triads as the best predictors of gossip behavior. However, another triad model, called neutralization, is proposed to predict the occurrences of gossip. Finally, the study also confirms the existence of the hidden transcripts by community participants who felt being oppressed by the powers that be.

Abstract

This study seeks to evaluate the public communication of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia regarding the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia from the perspective of journalists as government partners in conveying messages to the public. Using Grunig's systems theory and excellence theory as a theoretical framework, this study tries to understand how the government as a living organisme interacts with its environment and identifies the public relations strategy used in communicating with stakeholders regarding the pandemic. This study employed a qualitative approach using focus group discussions (FGD) and big data analysis (BDA) as data collection techniques. The results showed a change in the government's crisis communication pattern. This is driven by a change in leadership in related institutions and a shift in communication patterns from militaristic to non-militaristic. However, several problems are still found in the government's communication, including the finding of sectoral egos, inconsistency of messages sent by government institutions, the use of non-universal reference symbols, many unnecessary ceremonial aspects, and the gap between formulation and realization of ideas and involvement of stakeholders in the spirit of voluntarism.

Abstract

In international relations, public diplomacy is used by state actors and non-state actors to introduce cultures in the international sphere to create positive image of the countries. One of instruments of public diplomacy is gastrodiplomacy in which actors introduce cultures through special foods of certain country. One of non-state actors that has implemented gastrodiplomacy is Zahra Turkish Ice Cream, a company operated in several major cities in Indonesia such as in Jakarta, Bekasi, Bandung, and Yogyakarta with nine stores in total to introduce Turkey’s culture and identity. This paper describes Zahra Turkish Ice Cream’s role as a non-state actor in conducting gastrodiplomacy and revealed whether or not Zahra Turkish Ice Cream is able to attract consumers toward Turkey’s culture. This paper employs two concepts; new public diplomacy and gastrodiplomacy. This paper argues that Zahra Turkish Ice Cream has succeeded in introducing Turkey’s culture to its customers.

Abstract

Abstract

As the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ended, the United Nations followed them up with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One of the goals, Life Below Water, is very strategic to Indonesia given its position as the biggest maritime archipelagic nation in the world. However, Indonesia’s life below water faces threats as pollutants from human activities end up in the sea. Using Structural Human Ecology (SHE) theory, this article discusses the issue using cases in Jakarta and Bali and how the two provinces have dealt with the problem. Employing the qualitative method through document analyses, this study found that the two provinces have used different approaches in solving the problem. While Jakarta has its law regarding the issue, Bali has more progressive law in curbing the disposal of waste, especially plastic, to the river leading to the sea. Law enforcement and education have become the keys to ensuring that industrial and domestic actors to stop irresponsible disposal of waste.

Abstract

Two years of COVID-19 pandemic have brought global consequences, especially to those operating in business. This paper examines how risk and crisis preparedness contributed to business survival and resilience in the hospitality sector in Bali, Indonesia, a market significantly dependent on international visitors. This qualitative research employing a phenomenological approach. Initial data were acquired from two months of  observation in Bali from March 2020 until the end of May 2020. In addition to observation, semi structured interviews were also conducted with informants from four different hotels, aiming to uncover if the hotels embraced some strategies from the proactive pre-crisis planning to strategic implementations during the crisis. We did not include the after-crisis stage as the pandemic is still ongoing. The researchers validated findings through triangulating interviews with Balinese authorities. We found that although the current crisis disrupted hotel business, it also provided opportunities for creative communication, security strategies, and new connections with public sector health management. Further, in the early stages of crisis management preparedness and focused communication were vital for the level of survivability of the hotels. The study concluded that during a crisis, a successful organization management team does not follow a linear and organized process to lead their business through the stressful and chaotic phases. Based on this study, we  learned that business managers who adapted to the situation with crisis preparation, combined with raised awareness of public health issues, and use of commercial strategies focused on local communities can successfully reduce threats.

Abstract

In wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), the position of dalang or puppeteer is very crucial. Dalang is the show director, writer, narrator, musician, and not infrequently singer. Public preference and media exposure for women dalangs are, unfortunately, still lacking, thus affecting their future compared to those of men dalangs. Negative assumptions, such as that women dalangs are less exciting and not supposed to be dalangs, also contribute to the problem. This study attempts to highlight how women dalangs empower themselves so they can be considered equal as men dalangs, using the Three-Dimensional Model of Women Empowerment by Huis et al. This study was conducted using qualitative method with critical ethnography design, by interviewing 4 women dalangs and 2 men dalangs in the city of Solo, Central Java, and Jogjakarta. The result of this study shows that women dalangs are still facing difficulties in showmanship, especially in technical skills. They also need more collaboration with wayang communities to develop their career and existence. Furthermore, show varieties and a strong storytelling also become two important factors to differentiate them from men dalangs. These findings provide insight into the situation in Indonesia’s wayang kulit industry, with implications for gender equality and women empowerment.
