Abstract

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) is a fast-growing tree native in Australia, Papua, and Eastern part of Indonesia. It is valued for its timber, oil, gum, and resin, and as an ornamental tree. Many eucalyptus clones have been developed and planted for timber production in Sumatera. Several galls caused by insects are known as serious pests of eucalyptus and can reduce the quality and quantity of the timber production. This study was aimed to identify the gall inducers and describe the galls that formed on the eucalyptus clones which planted in Mt. Mutis, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The research was conducted from October 2017 to July 2018. A total of 855 seedlings consisting of 57 clones and 15 plants for each clone were planted in Mt. Mutis. Observations of the gall symptoms were done biweekly on each plant. Gall symptoms were directly observed and identified, included the form, size, location, color, and insect that caused the gall. There were four types of gall forms were recorded. One type of gall caused by Ophelimus sp. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) which similar to the gall recorded in Sumatera and Java. The other three gall forms were never been reported in Indonesia. The insects that associated with galls were Hymenoptera and Diptera orders. The type of gall that mostly found in the eucalyptus clones was the big clustered leaf gall caused by Fergusonina sp. (Diptera:  Fergusoninidae).  There are only two clones which are included as susceptible clones based on the type of gall formed, C35 and C53. There were 27 eucalyptus clones with no gall infestations which were considered as the good candidate of resistance eucalyptus clones to the gall infestations.

Abstract

Whiteflies are the main insect pests of Solanaceae plants, especially tomatoes. The need for tomatoes has not been met due to fluctuating production. Increasing tomato production to meet national needs can be done by controlling these two main insect pests. Control can be done using vegetable pesticides. These ingredients include tobacco leaves, citronella leaves, and Javanese chilies. This research was carried out in June - August 2024 at the Lampung State Polytechnic practicum area. The study used a randomized block design with 6 treatments and 4 replications. The six treatments consisted of six plant-based pesticide compositions based on tobacco leaves. The composition of the botanical pesticide made is A. 100% tobacco leaves, B. 50% tobacco leaves + 50% citronella leaves, C. 75% tobacco leaves + 25% citronella leaves, D. 50% tobacco leaves + 50% Javanese chili, E. 75% tobacco leaves + 25% Javanese chili, and F. 35% tobacco leaves + 35% citronella leaves, and 30% Javanese chili. The results obtained in this study were that all tobacco-based botanical pesticide treatments could reduce the whitefly population by 100%. No composition is most effective in suppressing whitefly populations on tomato plants.

Abstract

Philodendron xanadu is one of the leaf ornamental plants that much liked by society. Apart from being an ornament, P. xanadu also functions as an absorbent of toxic compounds contained inside the room. The potential development of P. xanadu is quite promising because the plant is widely used for decorating rooms and garden-forming elements.  The growth rate of P. xanadu which derived from the separation of saplings is very slow, where the plant height is barely increased, but the addition number of saplings is very rapid / numerous. These conditions are unfavorable when used as an ornamental plant because the beauty of the plant is not optimally expressed. To overcome this, it is necessary to conduct research on the use of gibberellic acid (GA3) and naphthalmylene acetic acid (NAA) to spur the plant growth.  The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of the use of GA3 and (NAA) to the growth of P. xanadu. The study was arranged factorial (2 factors) with a group randomized environment design. As the first factor is three levels of GA3 (0, 50, and 100 mg.l-1), and the second factor is 3 levels of NAA (0, 50, and 100 mg.l-1). Each experimental treatment was repeated 4 times. The results showed that the given of NAA and GA3 concentrations of 0, 50, and 100 mg.l-1 had no effect on the growth (leaf length) and the number of saplings P. xanadu. Keywords: GA3, NAA, Philodendron xanadu

Abstract

Plant growth promoting rhizobacter (PGPR) contains Rhizobacter which can fix free nitrogen found in nature, the nitrogen is converted into ammonia which is then distributed to plants. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of administering pgpr from two different bioactivator sources on the intensity of aphid attacks on chili plants. The experimental design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) which consisted of two factors, namely the PGPR concentration of bamboo roots and mimosa roots, namely 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. Each treatment was repeated 3 times with each experimental unit consisting of 4 curly chili plants of the Thunder 99 variety. Applications were carried out once a week during the vegetative period. Observations began at 1 WAP and once a week with the observation variables being the type of aphids and the intensity of aphid attacks on each plant during the vegetative period. The results obtained by administering PGPR bamboo roots and putrimalu roots were less effective because they were unable to suppress the intensity of aphid attacks on chili plants. Intensity of aphid attacks not different than control. The level of intensity of aphid attacks is directly proportional to the aphid population. PGPR that can relatively reduce the intensity of aphid attacks is bamboo root treatment with a concentration of 75%. A better PGPR bioactivator comes from bamboo roots rather than mimosa roots.

Abstract

The growth regulators in media have the potential to significantly influence the process of in vitro plant regeneration. The response of explants in forming shoots also depends on the type and the combination of growth regulators. This research aimed to identify the most optimal type and concentration of cytokinin for the multiplication of in vitro porang shoots. Additionally, it determined whether the addition of cytokinins should be accompanied by auxin/IAA for porang shoot multiplication. To achieve these objectives, a completely randomized design with six replications was employed, followed by a 5% BNJ. The tested treatments consisted of various combinations of growth regulators. Several observations were recorded, including the speed of explants forming prospective shoots/shoots (days), the age of the explants forming prospective shoots/shoots, the number of prospective shoots and shoots produced per explant, and shoot height (cm). The results showed that 1) Tdz 2 and IAA 0.5 mg.l-1 formed the highest shoots candidates and shoots in porang multiplication in vitro, and 2) the addition of BAP and Tdz 2 mg.l-1 should be combined with IAA 0.5 mg.l-1, while BAP and Tdz 3 mg.l-1 did not require IAA.
