Abstract

Fourfinger threadfin Eleutheronema tetradactylum has a local name, namely laosan fish by the coastal community of Lekok Pasuruan District, a type of demersal fish that can swim in brackish waters. This research aimed to determine the biological aspects, namely the relationship of Length to Weight, sex ratio, and to determine the feasibility of catching based on the measurement results of the length of the first caught (Lc) and the length of the gonads first ripened (Lm). This research was conducted based on catches during Januari - March 2020 for total samples of as much as 450 fish, based on the catch of gill nets. The result informed that the length and weight relationship was negative allometric. The sex ratio between male and female was 1.00: 0.00. During the study, no female gonads were found because the fourfinger threadfin had spawned protandrous hermaphrodites. The value of length at first maturity (Lm) and length at first capture (Lc) was 20.99 ± 0.13 cm and 24.66 ± 0.046 cm. Lc > Lm's value proves that the fish caught is dominant gonad ripe fish so that the fish is suitable for catching and the fishing gear used selectively.

Abstract

Multispecies demersal fisheries management in Brondong waters have been managed by conventional single-species approach for determining catch quota or annual allowable biological catch (ABC). This might be impractical since a multispecies fishery should be managed by a multispecies fisheries management approach. The feedback harvest control rule (HCR) is a harvest control rule that has been validated and might be applied for a multispecies fishery. The aim of this study is to compare the conventional single-species approach and the feedback HCR in order to estimate the annual ABC. In this study, the annual ABC was calculated by applying two HCRs, the conventional single-species approach that applying the Schaefer surplus production model into the catch and effort of the dominant demersal fisheries data series of 2011 – 2020. The results showed that the Schaefer model provided the annual ABC higher than the feedback HCR estimation. Therefore, it was safe to apply the feedback HCR than the Schaefer model to determine the annual ABC. Under data-limited conditions, the feedback HCR might be an option to manage multispecies fisheries.

Abstract

The shrimp fishery in Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, is a small-scale fishery that supplies raw materials to PT. Sekar Laut, Tbk, a company specializing in shrimp cracker production for the global market. Despite its significance, limited research has been conducted on the sustainability of this fishery. This study aims to analyze the key characteristics of the shrimp fishery in Kotabaru waters. Data were collected from January to August 2024 in Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, and subjected to various analyses, including species composition, length-weight relationships for several shrimp species, and identification of shrimp fishing grounds. The results reveal that banana shrimp and yellow shrimp are the predominant species within the catch, both exhibiting negative allometric growth patterns. The fishery’s most productive fishing location is identified in Pantai Village, highlighting this area as a potential focus for sustainable management initiatives. These findings underscore the need for ongoing monitoring and targeted management practices to promote the long-term sustainability of the shrimp fishery in Kotabaru.
