Abstract

Practical English Training for Tour Leaders organized by the English Study Program of Widyatama University at PT. Shiro Mandiri Wisata aims to improve English communication skills for tour leaders. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the training based on aspects of the suitability of the material, the skills mastered, and the frequency of English use in work. The method used involved a survey through a questionnaire filled out by the training participants. The results showed that 71% of participants felt that the training material was very appropriate for their needs. The most widely mastered skill was writing (38.1%), while the frequency of English use in work was still relatively low, with 54% of participants stating that they rarely used it. These findings indicate that although the training provides benefits in improving English comprehension, further efforts are still needed to improve speaking and listening skills, as well as improve the application of English in the work environment. Recommendations provided include increasing speaking practice, implementing English use policies in the company, and providing further training and certification programs. With these steps, it is hoped that tour leaders can be more confident and competent in providing tour guide services for foreign tourists.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of presupposition and presupposition triggers in The United States Presidential Debate 2024. It focuses on identifying the types of presuppositions and the presupposition triggers used by the candidates during the debate. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from official debate transcripts and analyzed based on theories by Yule (1996) and Levinson (1983). The results show that existential, factive, lexical, and structural presuppositions frequently appear in the candidates’ utterances. These are primarily triggered by definite descriptions, factive verbs, change-of-state verbs, and interrogative structures. The findings indicate that candidates strategically employ presuppositions to present opinions as established facts, frame narratives persuasively, and subtly influence public perception. This study contributes to the understanding of political discourse by uncovering how language is used implicitly to construct meaning and persuade audiences in political settings.

Abstract

This study analyzes the politeness strategies employed by Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi during her speeches at the 78th United Nations General Debate. The research employs a qualitative method for data collection, utilizing speech transcripts as primary data sources. Data analysis is conducted through thematic analysis, identifying and categorizing the politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson's politeness theory. To ensure data validity, triangulation is applied by cross-referencing the findings with expert opinions in the field of diplomatic communication. The research identifies four primary strategies: Positive Politeness, Bald-On Record, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record. Each strategy serves distinct contexts and purposes, reflecting the minister's diplomatic approach. The findings reveal that Retno Marsudi effectively utilizes these strategies to convey significant messages while considering factors such as social distance, ranking of imposition, and power dynamics in international relations. Notably, the study highlights the predominant use of Positive Politeness Strategy, which fosters solidarity and cooperation among nations. The implications of this research suggest that understanding politeness strategies can enhance diplomatic communication and foster better international relations, emphasizing the importance of cultural sensitivity in global discourse.

Abstract

Students' reading habits as well as their vocabulary development show gradual changes because of the increased adoption of digital technology. The research investigates digital resource effects on these changes by examining final-year English education students from Universitas Swadaya Gunung Jati Cirebon. A qualitative descriptive research design involved questionnaire and interview data collection methodologies to obtain more accurate and in-depth findings. Students can achieve greater vocabulary development through digital resources, which include mobile apps alongside e-books and online articles, because these resources deliver enhanced reading material accessibility, allowing learners to engage with texts more frequently and in more diverse contexts. The majority of 74% of participants experienced productive vocabulary growth because digital resources help them recognize new words easily and repeatedly in various settings. The survey participants noted that digital resources enabled both better flexibility when reading and increased reading sessions due to the convenience and user-friendliness of such platforms. Therefore, structure common prey-worth resources with curriculum needs to foster improved reading behaviours, which result in higher language advancement for students and support their long-term academic success in English language learning.

Abstract

The identification of hate speech must be accompanied by the identification of social identity concepts. This study aims to provide an alternative corpus with text metadata and social identity based on relevant laws that are designed to be implemented in machine learning. Two key questions are addressed: what social identity semantic domains are realized in the corpus, and what are the accuracy measurement results from the corpus? To achieve these aims, the study adopts a mixed-methods approach: qualitative for the first question and quantitative for the second. This research falls under the broader umbrella of computational linguistics, utilizing semantic domain theory and natural language processing. The first approach shows that the corpus only contributes five out of nine formulated domains, dominated by negative (uncategorized), religion, and ethnicity. The second approach indicates suboptimal conditions in the annotation distribution of the corpus, despite an average accuracy rate of over 80%. This condition limits the model’s ability to generalize beyond the information within the corpus, especially regarding social identity categories that are not fully represented. This study differs from previous ones by focusing on data categorization based on more up-to-date legal sources. Future research could elaborate on this work by incorporating new language use concepts aligned with the corpus's original goal to detect hate speech.

Abstract

Efficient attendance tracking and academic schedule management are critical for students and lecturers in higher education. However, many existing systems lack user-friendly interfaces and integrated functionality, resulting in inefficiencies and reduced user satisfaction. This study aims to develop and evaluate the user experience of ‘Attend’, a mobile application designed to address these challenges. The target population consisted of higher education students and lecturers, with 35 student respondents participating in the evaluation phase through interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) to inform the design of an intuitive and functional interface prototype. The authors conducted usability testing using the Maze App to assess task completion efficiency, followed by a user experience evaluation using the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). The results showed that users were able to complete tasks efficiently, although some interface components required refinement. The UEQ scores showed 'Above Average' ratings for attractiveness, efficiency, dependability, and novelty. The app also received 'Good' ratings for perspicuity and stimulation for improving clarity. These findings suggest that Attend effectively meets the needs and expectations of users in academic settings. This study contributes to the development of mobile-based educational tools by demonstrating the importance of incorporating user feedback in the design process to improve usability and user satisfaction.

Abstract

The virtual environments have provided users with varied degrees of digital transformation, despite the fact that users are non-permanent and unconnected. To further assist the digital transition in every element of physical life, the term Metaverse has been coined. It cannot be avoided that language, furthermore linguistics, has involvement to the word framing and word creation within Metaverse. This research is purposed to determine some typical new-word formations or neologisms that impact to the establishment of terminologies within Metaverse. On the other hand, cultural aspect also becomes the concern towards this new universe; since people need to be well-informed in the term of consequence and benefits. The method of the research applied qualitative method and distributional method by Segmenting Immediate Constituents Techniques; which means the technique of dividing a construction of direct elements which form the construction. Three main theories used in this paper are neologism by Kilmer (2020), social disruption by Kumbara et al. (2020) and Metaverse by Mystakidis (2019). The paper puts three different terminologies that are analyzed using linguistic and cultural perspective. Those three words are Persistent Virtual World (PVW), blockchain and NFT that massively arise in the Metaverse terminologies. Based on the analysis, it can be inferred that those terminologies are categorized to morphological and semantic neologism; which also includes abbreviation and broadening. The notion of an immersive Internet as a massive, unified, persistent, and shared realm is at the core of Metaverse.

Abstract

This paper is about a pragmatic study of the flouting maxim that appears in the court proceeding of Ferdi Sambo’s maid, Susi. The objectives of this paper are (1) to identify the category of flouting maxims that appear in Susi’s answer to her court proceedings, and (2) to find out what the reason is for the appearance of those flouting maxims that Susi breaks. This research used a descriptive-qualitative approach. In analyzing the data, this study used the theories of Grice, 1975 and Cutting (2002 as reasons theory. This research also used the theories of George Yule, 1996 and Levinson (2013) to support the research. The writer found 25 utterances that flout the four categories of maxims from the source data. Which are, the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of manner. The dominant flouting maxims that appear are maxims of quality and quantity, with 40% for quality and 28% for quantity, while the others have the same amount of calculation, which is 16% for the flouting maxim of relevance and 16% for the flouting maxim of manner. There are several reasons why these flouting maxims appear, such as overstatement, understatement, irrelevant statements, and ambiguous statements.
