Abstract

Music has the power to convey meaningful messages, including motivational messages. Using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory, this research examines the motivational messages in the lyrics of the song I’m Fine by BTS. The primary focus of this research is on how meaning is produced through the signifier and signified relationship. This research employs an interpretive qualitative approach to delve deep into the social phenomenon. The semiotic approach allows the researchers to explain how signs in song lyrics function in bringing motivational messages. Data were gathered from the lyrics of the song I’m Fine and analysed thoroughly by dissecting the relationship between signifier and signified. This research discovered the hidden messages the songwriter wanted to convey to the listeners. The results show that this song conveys the value of having courage when facing challenges, mental toughness when facing difficulties, and the ability to bounce back from them. This encourages listeners to be optimistic, not to give up, and instead keep trying despite the obstacles. This research proves that song lyrics in the song I’m Fine by BTS were not merely a musical work but also a medium for conveying powerful inspirational messages: one can achieve inner peace and emotional resilience by pushing through life’s challenges with courage.

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to examine the forms of representation of Roland Barthes' narrative codes in Danusha Laméris' poem Small Kindnesses. The narrative codes are: Hermeneutic Code, Proairetic Code, Semantic Code, Symbolic Code, and Cultural Code. The aim of identifying these codes is to discover the implied meaning in addition to the literal meaning of a discourse. As Barthes in his modern semiotic theory proposed connotative meaning in addition to denotative meaning. This research uses a step-by-step qualitative approach by following the way Barthes explored the novel Sarrasine in his book when he introduced the theory of narrative codes. The outcome of the study reveals that in the poem Small Kindnesses, five narrative codes are used in it to achieve connotative meaning or hidden meaning. The result of this meaning is how Small Kindnesses carries social, structural, as well as religious messages as a poem.    Keywords: danusha laméris, connotative meaning, narrative codes, small kindnesses, roland barthes.

Abstract

This study investigates the verbal and non-verbal elements within the logos of the "Big Six" Premier League clubs, aiming to uncover their denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings, and how these aspects represent identity. Using a qualitative descriptive approach based on Roland Barthes' semiotic framework, the research draws data from official club websites and documented literature. The analysis reveals that logos embody club identities through denotation, connotation, and myth, reflecting the historical, cultural, and social values associated with the clubs and their respective cities. Key components such as colors, symbols, and text, which are distinctive to each logo, play a significant role. This study contributes to the fields of cultural studies, semiotics, sports branding, and identity representation in visual communication and design. By exploring the semiotic depth of football logos, it bridges cultural semiotics and sports branding, uncovering often-overlooked narratives and enhancing both academic and fan perspectives on logo symbolism.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of signs on Nivea Men product packaging, focusing on their interpretation and effectiveness in delivering persuasive messages. Employing Charles Sanders Peirce’s Triadic Relation Theory, a qualitative method was used to examine product categories and their connection to everyday experiences. Data were collected through observation and documentation from Nivea Men’s official website, then analyzed using triadic theory and persuasion methods. The results reveal that signs significantly influence consumer interpretation and the persuasive value of products, although some signs do not fully align with their intended meanings. This study highlights the importance of designing clear and purposeful signs to enhance advertising strategies and consumer understanding. Future research should focus on refining semiotic and persuasion techniques to align signs more effectively with product identity and market needs.

All Distortions Are Intentional is an album from Neck Deep, which was released in 2020. The album consists of twelve songs that explore various themes, including the quarterlife crisis phenomenon. The research seeks to analyse the depiction of the quarterlife crisis phenomenon as experienced by the character through the theory of Michael Riffaterre's semiotics theory, emphasising two key approaches: 1) heuristic and hermeneutic reading, and 2) indirect expression. This research employs a qualitative approach, emphasising content analysis. This research employed content analysis to analyse the song lyrics from All Distortions Are Intentional album. This research identifies that the depiction of quarterlife crisis in All Distortions Are Intentional album presents in only three songs: Sonderland, Telling Stories, and Sick Joke. Those songs depict the quarterlife crisis through hermeneutic reading and indirect expression. Abstract

This research explores semiotic analysis by focusing on the trichotomy of object including icon, index, and symbol found in the Free Palestine campaign posters, emphasizing their role in conveying messages in visual media about the campaign. The visual media are posters that effectively disseminate information and mobilize support through social media platforms. This research uses a qualitative method, by analyzing five selected posters taken from the pinterest platform that reflect the campaign theme. Using Charles Sanders Peirce's trichotomy of object regarding icons, indexes, and symbols, this analysis reveals how each poster uses different visual elements to communicate a comprehensive narrative. The analysis showed that of the five posters studied, a total of 9 icons, 8 indexes, and 7 symbols were identified. The conclusion of this study shows that the combination of visual representations and symbolic meanings in the posters serves not only as a communication tool, but also as a powerful act of support for the liberation of Palestine. Abstract

Religious poetry in the Shi’a tradition serves not only as a medium of mourning but also as a vehicle for theological expression and spiritual reflection. Mohtasham Kashani’s Davazdah-Band, a central elegy in classical Persian literature, intricately weaves Qur’anic references into its portrayal of the Karbala tragedy. Despite its cultural significance, the poem has received limited scholarly attention in terms of its intertextual engagement with the Qur’an, particularly in Indonesian academic discourse. This study investigates how Qur’anic verses are embedded, recontextualized, and transformed within Davazdah-Band to reinforce Shi’a theological ideals. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach based on Gérard Genette’s theory of transtextuality, the research identifies instances of direct quotation, thematic allusion, and symbolic transformation. The analysis reveals that Qur’anic imagery, such as water, blood, patience, and sacrifice, is repurposed to sacralize the suffering of Husayn and legitimize the Shi’a worldview. The elegy thus becomes a site of devotional performance, where poetic form and sacred text converge to construct collective memory and religious identity.

Abstract

This research examines the representation of trauma bonding in Hozier's song "Cherry Wine" using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach. Trauma bonding refers to the emotional attachment that develops between a victim and their abuser in an abusive relationship. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the lyrics of the song reflect the complexities of such relationships, focusing on the dynamic of love and violence that traps victims emotionally. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through an in-depth analysis of the song lyrics. The lyrics serve as the signifier, while the emotional experiences depicted represent the signified. The research findings reveal that Hozier portrays the victim’s conflicting emotions—simultaneous love and pain—through contrasting imagery, such as warmth and coldness, highlighting the unpredictable nature of abuse. This study contributes to a broader understanding of how popular music can be used to raise awareness about social issues, particularly domestic violence. In conclusion, the analysis demonstrates that "Cherry Wine" effectively conveys the emotional complexities of trauma bonding, providing listeners with insight into the experiences of victims.
