Abstract

Introduction: Low frequency of breastfeeding (<8 times per day) can reduce the infant's body fluid volume, thereby hindering bilirubin excretion and resulting in reabsorption into the bloodstream. This condition increases bilirubin levels and the risk of neonatal jaundice. If not properly managed, jaundice can develop into kernicterus, a condition of permanent brain damage caused by the accumulation of bilirubin in brain tissue. In Indonesia, the incidence rate of hyperbilirubinemia is 79.6%. At Bhayangkara Hospital Bondowoso in 2024, 25.7% of newborns experienced jaundice. This study aims to analyze the relationship between breastfeeding frequency and the incidence of neonatal jaundice in the Perinatology Unit of Bhayangkara Hospital Bondowoso. Methods: This is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of all mothers who gave birth at Bhayangkara Hospital Bondowoso, totaling 103 individuals. The sample size was calculated using the Slovin formula, resulting in 83 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents (54%) breastfed with a low frequency (<8 times per day), while 46% breastfed frequently (≥8 times per day). Furthermore, 53% of infants experienced jaundice, while 47% did not. Based on the chi-square statistical test, there was a significant relationship between breastfeeding frequency and the incidence of neonatal jaundice at Bhayangkara Hospital Bondowoso, with a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05). Conclusions: This indicates that the lower the frequency of breastfeeding, the higher the risk of jaundice in newborns. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a foundation for enhancing education for breastfeeding mothers to prevent jaundice in newborns. Keywords: Breastfeeding frequency, neonatal jaundice

Abstract

Children aged 12-24 months are included in the golden period of the first 1000 days of life, wheretheir nutritional needs greatly affect growth and development in the future. The role of themother is very influential in the upbringing and care of the child. This study aimed to determinethe relationship between parenting style and nutritional status of babies aged 12-24 months atthe Jelbuk Public Health Center, Jember Regency. The research design used was cross-sectional.The sampling technique used proportionate random sampling and obtained a total sample of 97mothers and babies under two years. Mothers were instructed to fill out mother's parentingquestionnaires. The nutritional status of children under two years is measured by weight/ageindicators and interpreted based on the WHO classification of nutritional status. The child'sweight was obtained using a hanging-type scale (dacin). Statistical analysis using Spearman rankwith significance ≤0.05. Most children (50%) of mothers with permissive parenting areunderweight, 47.1% are normal, and 2.9% are at risk of being overweight. Most children (86%)of mothers with democratic parenting have normal nutritional status, and 14% are underweight. Most children (83.3%) of mothers with authoritarian parenting have normal weight, and 16.7%are underweight. There is a relationship between parenting style and the nutritional status ofchildren aged 12-24 months (p value = 0.001; α = 0.05). The application of democratic parentinghas the potential to cause normal weight in children. Therefore, health promotion is neededabout parenting by related parties to mothers of children because parenting affects eating habitsthat impact children's nutritional status.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction: Managing diabetes is complex and demands daily responsibilities like regular blood glucose testing, intensive insulin treatment, careful dietary monitoring, and enhanced physical activity. These challenges make it difficult for children and their families to maintain consistent adherence to diabetes management routines. Failure to adhere to diabetes management can lead to serious complications and may even result in death. Identifying the factors that hinder treatment adherence is essential for developing effective strategies and interventions to overcome these obstacles and improve diabetes management in children. This study aimed to identify barriers on diabetes management adherence in children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Methods: The research design used a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines and utilized five databases including Proquest, Science Direct, Springer Link, Sage Journals, and Google Scholar with the keywords: “Barriers” OR “Challenges” OR “Difficulties” AND “Diabetes management” AND “Adherence” AND “Children” AND “Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus”. A total of eight articles were reviewed based on the inclusion criteria. The JBI Critical Appraisal Tools were also used as a guideline to evaluate the quality of the articles. Results: This review identifies various barriers to adherence in diabetes management in children with T1DM, including personal, sociocultural, interpersonal, environmental, and financial barriers. Conclusions: The findings from this review suggest several strategies to address barriers to diabetes management adherence involving parents, family, school, and health services. Keywords: Barriers, diabetes management, children, type 1 diabetes mellitus

Abstract

The technology-based daily recording of children's dietary is expected to be able to provide an easier overview of children's nutritional status. So, it will reduce the number of nutritional imbalances in children. This research aimed to know to determine the effectiveness of children's daily dietary recording with an application to estimate children's nutritional needs. The research method was used a literature review study. Result: From the results of the study, it was concluded that the use of food recording applications, either using photos or not, provides increased information on children's daily nutrition. The application allows an estimation of children's diet's food portions and nutrition. It may become a benchmark for parents or health workers in providing children's diets. The dietary assessment application can be used in the community and hospitals to monitor children's nutrition status. It is recommended that further research include food waste in the calculation so that the daily energy estimate is more accurate.
