Abstract

As the world becomes more interconnected, the ability to swiftly adapt to changes has never been more crucial. Consequently, the Indonesian government has proposed that all educational institutions promote 21st-century competencies in every subject, including English lessons. In language teaching classes, preservice teachers must evolve to meet the demands of future competencies, which are essential for participating in global commerce, diplomacy, and multicultural societies. These competencies include critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. This study aims to investigate how preservice teachers conceptualize these competencies and the strategies they use to enhance language teaching. The data was gathered from male students enrolled in an Instructional Design Class who received material on 21st-century skills. The findings reveal that all male instructional designers meet the demands of future competencies and are actively incorporating strategies to develop these skills in their language teaching practices. These strategies include integrating technology, promoting a scientific approach, and preparing for the demands of an interconnected, globalized world. However, there is still a need to focus on effective teaching techniques to achieve the desired learning outcomes in language education. This study highlights the importance of continuous adaptation and innovation in teaching methodologies to equip students with the necessary skills for the future.

Abstract

Theoretically, reading anxiety can affect their reading comprehension. This research is aimed to uncover whether there is a correlation between reading anxiety and their reading comprehension. Empirically, the rationalities of the research are based on the three main rationales. Firstly, The pupils experience anxiety when attempting to understand the English texts, and occasionally they exploit this as a justification to skip class. Second, students believe it is difficult to read in other languages, particularly English. Thridly, many students become worry about making mistake. The research was a correlation research. The population of research was students of class VIII SMPN 3 Bukittinggi, aeround Five classes, consist of 140 students. The sample for the research was 140 students selected using the total sampling technique. Tests and questionnaires were used to get the data. This research utilized the Pearson Product Moment to examine the data and tested the hypothesis. The results were consulted in a t-table with a significance level of ?=5%, and the t-test method was applied. Findings from the eighth grade PFS indicated a relationship between students' reading anxiety and comprehension. Strong correlation (0.668) was found for SMPN 3 Bukittinggi. Based on the strong correlation threshold of 0.60-0.799, the researcher determined that rxy = 0.668 with N 138 was statistically significant. It indicates that whereas ha was accepted, ho was refused. When the research's mean, ho, was rejected and ha was approved, the Pearson product moment formula was used to compare it to the R-table. The results showed that rxy (0.668) > rtable (0.167). In summary, the findings indicated a favorable relationship between eighth-grade SMPN 3 Bukittinggi students' reading comprehension and their reading anxiety.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan di sekolah menengah pertama yang memiliki masalah dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, khususnya pemahaman membaca. Ada beberapa masalah yang ditemukan di sekolah menengah pertama yang berkaitan dengan pemahaman membaca. Pertama, sulit siswa untuk mengidentifikasi teks dalam mengenali objek untuk menjawab beberapa pertanyaan teks yang membuat siswa lama untuk memahami teks, masalah lain adalah kosakata siswa sangat terbatas dan membuat pencarian kata-kata yang berbeda dalam kamus membutuhkan waktu untuk menyelesaikan tugas, nilai siswa dalam tes Bahasa Inggris masih di bawah kriteria ketuntasan minimum (KKM), yang terakhir adalah tentang teknik guru dalam mengajar membaca. Guru mencoba menerjemahkan dalam teks satu per satu pada setiap pertemuan. Oleh karena itu peneliti berasumsi untuk membuktikan apakah teknik Two stay Two stray (TSTS)mampu meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain eksperimen quasi dengan menggunakan menggunakan kelompok control pre test-post test. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas III MTs 6 Agam. Sampelnya adalah IX7 yang digunakan sebagai kelas eksperimen dan diajar dengan teknik Two stay two straydan IX6 digunakan sebagai kelas kontrol dan diajar dengan teknik konvensional. Untuk menentukan sampel, peneliti menggunakan random sampling. Instrumen penelitian berupates membaca. Data diperoleh melalui pretest dan posttest untuk kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Untuk menganalisis data peneliti menggunakan program SPSS 20 untuk menguji normalitas dan menguji homogenitas. Kemudian untuk menguji hipotesis peneliti menggunakan uji t (SPSS 20) diperoleh (?) = 0,05. Dari hasil tersebut bahwa Two stay two stray mampu meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa, dibuktikan dengan Ha di terima dan Ho di tolak yang artinya ada pengaruh yang signifikan penggunaan teknik two stay two stray terdapat pemahaman membaca pada eksperimen. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa penggunaan teknik two stay two stray sebagai pemahaman membaca dapat membantu siswa meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam pemahaman membaca.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui strategi apa saja yang digunakan guru dalam mengajar menulis di kelas X MAN 3 Agam Kubang Putih. Berdasarkan observasi, peneliti menemukan bahwa guru mengajar teks recount. Pertama, guru mengajarkan pengertian teks recount. Kedua, guru mengajarkan apa itu generic structure dan apa itu tenses. Ketiga, guru menjelaskan apa itu simple present. Keempat, setelah guru menjelaskan topic tersebut, guru memberikan contoh teks recount dengan menuliskan contoh teks di papan tulis. Kelima, guru meminta siswa menuliskan pengalamannya dalam sebuah paragraph sederhana. Peneliti melihat bahwa siswa memahami apa yang sudah diajarkan oleh guru. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Sedangkan proses pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan melakukan observasi menggunakan obersvasi ceklis dan melakukan wawancara dengan guru dan siswa kelas X Man 3 Agam Kubang Putiah. Data yang didapatkan akan di analisa menggunakan analisis data kualitatif. Peneliti menemukan bahwa terdapat tiga strategi yang digunakan oleh guru dalam mengajar menulis di kelas X MAN 3 Agam Kubang Putiah.Yaitu: Guided writing,TTW dan PLEASE strategi. Namun, selain ketiga strategi tersebut, Guided Writing hanya diterapkan pada observasi pertama sedangkan TTW diterapkan pada setiap pertemuan. Sedangkan strategi PLEASE hanya diterapkan dalam pertemuan ke empat. Selainitu, meskipun guru menerapkan ketiga strategi tersebut, langkah-langkahnya masih belum lengkap. Dengan kata lain, ada langkah-langkah yang hilang dalam pelaksanaan strategi ini.

Abstract

Ada banyak orang di dunia ini yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris dan itu menjadikan bahasa Inggris sebagai hal yang paling penting untuk dipelajari. Bahasa Inggris telah menjadi bahasa internasional. Menurut Syafitri dan Artika, bahasa Inggris merupakan bahasa pengantar internasional yang berpengaruh, empat puluh dua negara di dunia menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar resmi (Widya Syafitri, 2019). Selain itu, bahasa Inggris telah menjadi bahasa terpopuler di dunia. Artinya bahasa Inggris penting untuk dipelajari, khususnya bagi pelajar. Berbicara sebagai media komunikasi memungkinkan kita bertukar informasi, pikiran, perasaan dengan orang lain. Sebaliknya, kemampuan berbicara siswa relatif rendah. Hal ini memunculkan ide untuk melakukan pembelajaran berbicara dengan menerapkan pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis tugas untuk membantu siswa meningkatkan keterampilan berbicaranya. Desain penelitian ini adalah metode kuantitatif dengan desain quasi eksperimen dengan membandingkan dua kelas. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pre-test dan post-test. Kelas kontrol berjumlah 31 siswa dan kelas eksperimen berjumlah 31 siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penerapan pembelajaran berbasis tugas terhadap keterampilan berbicara siswa. Hal ini menunjukkan t hitung (3,852) lebih tinggi dibandingkan t tabel (2,004). Berikutnya, terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan pada keterampilan berbicara siswa yang diajar dengan pembelajaran berbasis tugas dan yang diajar tanpa pembelajaran berbasis tugas. Hal ini terbukti dengan nilai t hitung lebih besar dari t tabel (2,807 > 2,004). Terakhir, keterampilan berbicara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis tugas lebih baik dibandingkan siswa yang diajar tanpa menggunakan pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis tugas. Hal ini terbukti dengan peningkatan nilai rata-rata kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan nilai rata-rata kelas kontrol (9,08 > 3,72).

Abstract

Responding to the low interest among Indonesian students has prompted the government to formulate strategic policies to guarantee the future success of national education. One of the strategies is emphasizing the establishment of literacy programs at schools. This research is expected to see the execution of the program and find out the obstacles in handling the program. The subjects of this research were the literacy teams of the schools that consist of the administrators, the teachers, and the principals of the vocational schools in Padang Pariaman Regency. Ten schools, both private and public, were selected as the focus of this study. The data was collected through interviews and observations through the stages of implementing the literacy movement guidelines from Kemdikbud. The result showed that the literacy movement in Padang Pariaman regency was still at the habituation level and needed further government’ attention. The obstacles were found from the lack of the headmaster and the teams’ understanding in comprehending the movement. Hence, the government needs to do accompaniment to implement the program successfully.

Abstract

This research was conducted because of some problems related to speaking anxiety in male and female students in English learning. Some female students looked worried about being pointed out and there were a few students who were able to raise their hands to give opinions. Then, some female students showed anxiety when they became the center of attention. Third, some male students looked hesitant when they pronounced some words. Lastly, some male students felt more comfortable when giving opinions or answering teacher questions by using their first language rather than the English language. Because of these problems, the researcher intended to find out the significant difference on speaking anxiety level between male and female students, and to find out the dominant factor of speaking anxiety in male and female students at the VIIth grade of Islamic Boarding School Ashhabul Yamin Lasi. The research design was Ex Post Facto research. The data were collected by using 18 items of the FLSAS (Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale) questionnaire that were adopted from Ozturk and Gurbuz 2014. There were three indicators of speaking anxiety; Communication Apprehension, Test Anxiety and Fear of Negative Evaluation. The levels of speaking anxiety were low anxiety, moderate anxiety, and high anxiety. The population of this research was all of the seventh grade students which consisted of 3 classes. The sample was 80 students that were selected by using total sampling technique. The research was conducted in February 2022 in Islamic boarding School Ashhabul Yamin Lasi. Then, by using the SPSS program, an independent sample t-test was used to compare speaking anxiety level between male and female students, and a descriptive statistic was used to reveal the dominant factor of speaking anxiety in male and female students. The first result of the research showed that there was a significant difference on speaking anxiety level between male and female students at the VIIth grade of Islamic Boarding School Ashhabul Yamin Lasi. The researcher found the t-obtained (3.484) was higher than T-table (1.990). It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. The level of speaking anxiety in female students was moderate anxiety and male students were low anxiety. The second results that were the dominant factor of speaking anxiety in male students was test anxiety (18.12%), where it is because of students’ perception about English language. Meanwhile, the dominant factor of speaking anxiety in female students was fear of negative evaluation (20.68%), where it is because of unpreparedness of students.

Abstract

This research was due to some problems that were found in the 6th semester students of English Education Study Program in UIN Bukittingi. First, the students had vocabulary problem in translating Indonesian to English, especially the ability to use the proper vocabulary in translating. Second, the students had grammar problem in translating Indonesian to English, especially tenses and time condition. The purpose of this research was to find out the type of error that they make when translating text from Indonesian into English and to find out the most frequent error the students make when translating text from Indonesian into English. This research was a descriptive quantitative research. The sampling technique that researcher uses was total sampling. The instrument that was used in a research was translation test. It was a text consists of three paragraphs in Indonesian that must be translated into English. The researcher found that addition errors were made 7.31% of the time, omission errors were made 27.74% of the time, literalness errors were made 13.98% of the time, ambiguity errors were made 17.42% of the time, punctuation errors were made 4.95% of the time, spelling errors were made 3.44% of the time, and capitalization errors were made 25.16% of the time. It can be concluded that omission error is the most frequent error, followed by capitalization, ambiguity, literalness, addition, punctuation, and spelling. This make spelling as the least frequent error that the students made.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan Grammarly checker untuk keakurasian penulisan di Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh beberapa masalah yang berkaitan dengan akurasi penulisan. Masalah pertama adalah mahasiswa membuat kesalahan pengejaan kosa kata pada writing mereka. Masalah kedua yang ditemui adalah grammatical error (kesalahan pada tata Bahasa). Masalah yang terakhir yaitu kesalahan mahasiswa pada penggunaan tanda baca pada writing mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan persepsi mahasiswa terhadap fungsi dan kepraktisan Grammarly Checker untuk keakuratan penulisan. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian survei. Peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan menggunakan kuesioner. Indikator instrument yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yaitu correcting word usage, correcting sentence structure, correcting punctuation and spelling usage, the procedure of using the tools and time usage. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester enam di Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Peneliti menggunakan teknik random sampling untuk menentukan sampel. Sampel penelitian ini berjumlah 33 mahasiswa pada tahun akademik 2019/2020. Untuk menganalisis data, peneliti menghitung persentase dari setiap pernyataan yang diberikan oleh mahasiswa, mencari tahu mean dari setiap sub variabel dan membuat kesimpulan dengan tingkat penilaian kualitas.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan Grammarly checker untuk ketepatan penulisan di semester enam pada Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek tahun akademik 2019/2020 Bukittinggi berada pada tingkat kualitas yang sangat baik. Peneliti menemukan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan Grammarly checker untuk ketepatan penulisan di semester enam Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi adalah 80,81% berdasarkan tabel interpretasi 80% - 100%. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa semester enam Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi merasa puas dengan penggunaan Grammarly checker untuk ketepatan penulisan di semester enam Program Studi Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan karena ada beberapa siswa yang memiliki masalah dalam berbicara. Masalahnya adalah siswa tidak dapat berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris secara komunikatif. Oleh karena itu, peneliti ingin mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan teknik Role Play terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mendeskripsikan orang di kelas delapan Pondok Pesantren Al-Irsyad Bulaan Kamba tahun ajaran 2022/2023. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen semu yang melibatkan dua variabel yaitu variabel bebas dan variabel terikat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada pengaruh penggunaan teknik Role Play terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mendeskripsikan orang di kelas delapan Pondok Pesantren Al-Irsyad Bulaan Kamba tahun pelajaran 2022/2023. Disajikan dengan menggunakan statistik uji sampel berpasangan SPSS. Kriteria uji t sederhana berpasangan adalah Ha diterima bila uji signifikansi < 0,005, sebaliknya Ho ditolak.
