Abstract

This research was motivated by several problems of students at the 9th grade of SMPN 2 Rao Selatan related to students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. The problems of this research were students felt difficult to determine the main idea in narrative text. Students were low enthusiastic in learning. This research aimed to know whether there was significant effect of using cartoon film on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. The researcher used a pre experimental research with one group pretest posttest design. The population of this research was the 9th grade students of SMPN 2 Rao Selatan consist of 2 classes, the sample was in class IX.1 which was taken by using purposive sampling technique. The data was analyzed by using liliefors test to test the normality and homogeneity data. Whereas, the hypothesis the researcher used t test, then the researcher consulted the result with the degree table (a) = 0.05. The research findings showed that the reading comprehension in narrative text of students at the 9th grade of SMPN 2 Rao Selatan had poor score in pretest which mean score 51.40. After treatment, their reading comprehension increased significantly which mean score 72.00. The result of the t-obtained =9.726 > t-table=2.093 with degree freedom (df) =19 with 0.05/2=0.025. Meanwhile, the Sig (2-tailed) was 0.000 < 0.005. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted that there was significant effect of using cartoon film. It was proven that using cartoon film can help to improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan di sekolah menengah pertama yang memiliki masalah dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, khususnya pemahaman membaca. Ada beberapa masalah yang ditemukan di sekolah menengah pertama yang berkaitan dengan pemahaman membaca. Pertama, sulit siswa untuk mengidentifikasi teks dalam mengenali objek untuk menjawab beberapa pertanyaan teks yang membuat siswa lama untuk memahami teks, masalah lain adalah kosakata siswa sangat terbatas dan membuat pencarian kata-kata yang berbeda dalam kamus membutuhkan waktu untuk menyelesaikan tugas, nilai siswa dalam tes Bahasa Inggris masih di bawah kriteria ketuntasan minimum (KKM), yang terakhir adalah tentang teknik guru dalam mengajar membaca. Guru mencoba menerjemahkan dalam teks satu per satu pada setiap pertemuan. Oleh karena itu peneliti berasumsi untuk membuktikan apakah teknik Two stay Two stray (TSTS)mampu meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain eksperimen quasi dengan menggunakan menggunakan kelompok control pre test-post test. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas III MTs 6 Agam. Sampelnya adalah IX7 yang digunakan sebagai kelas eksperimen dan diajar dengan teknik Two stay two straydan IX6 digunakan sebagai kelas kontrol dan diajar dengan teknik konvensional. Untuk menentukan sampel, peneliti menggunakan random sampling. Instrumen penelitian berupates membaca. Data diperoleh melalui pretest dan posttest untuk kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Untuk menganalisis data peneliti menggunakan program SPSS 20 untuk menguji normalitas dan menguji homogenitas. Kemudian untuk menguji hipotesis peneliti menggunakan uji t (SPSS 20) diperoleh (?) = 0,05. Dari hasil tersebut bahwa Two stay two stray mampu meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa, dibuktikan dengan Ha di terima dan Ho di tolak yang artinya ada pengaruh yang signifikan penggunaan teknik two stay two stray terdapat pemahaman membaca pada eksperimen. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa penggunaan teknik two stay two stray sebagai pemahaman membaca dapat membantu siswa meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam pemahaman membaca.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui strategi apa saja yang digunakan guru dalam mengajar menulis di kelas X MAN 3 Agam Kubang Putih. Berdasarkan observasi, peneliti menemukan bahwa guru mengajar teks recount. Pertama, guru mengajarkan pengertian teks recount. Kedua, guru mengajarkan apa itu generic structure dan apa itu tenses. Ketiga, guru menjelaskan apa itu simple present. Keempat, setelah guru menjelaskan topic tersebut, guru memberikan contoh teks recount dengan menuliskan contoh teks di papan tulis. Kelima, guru meminta siswa menuliskan pengalamannya dalam sebuah paragraph sederhana. Peneliti melihat bahwa siswa memahami apa yang sudah diajarkan oleh guru. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Sedangkan proses pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan melakukan observasi menggunakan obersvasi ceklis dan melakukan wawancara dengan guru dan siswa kelas X Man 3 Agam Kubang Putiah. Data yang didapatkan akan di analisa menggunakan analisis data kualitatif. Peneliti menemukan bahwa terdapat tiga strategi yang digunakan oleh guru dalam mengajar menulis di kelas X MAN 3 Agam Kubang Putiah.Yaitu: Guided writing,TTW dan PLEASE strategi. Namun, selain ketiga strategi tersebut, Guided Writing hanya diterapkan pada observasi pertama sedangkan TTW diterapkan pada setiap pertemuan. Sedangkan strategi PLEASE hanya diterapkan dalam pertemuan ke empat. Selainitu, meskipun guru menerapkan ketiga strategi tersebut, langkah-langkahnya masih belum lengkap. Dengan kata lain, ada langkah-langkah yang hilang dalam pelaksanaan strategi ini.

Abstract

Ada banyak orang di dunia ini yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris dan itu menjadikan bahasa Inggris sebagai hal yang paling penting untuk dipelajari. Bahasa Inggris telah menjadi bahasa internasional. Menurut Syafitri dan Artika, bahasa Inggris merupakan bahasa pengantar internasional yang berpengaruh, empat puluh dua negara di dunia menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar resmi (Widya Syafitri, 2019). Selain itu, bahasa Inggris telah menjadi bahasa terpopuler di dunia. Artinya bahasa Inggris penting untuk dipelajari, khususnya bagi pelajar. Berbicara sebagai media komunikasi memungkinkan kita bertukar informasi, pikiran, perasaan dengan orang lain. Sebaliknya, kemampuan berbicara siswa relatif rendah. Hal ini memunculkan ide untuk melakukan pembelajaran berbicara dengan menerapkan pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis tugas untuk membantu siswa meningkatkan keterampilan berbicaranya. Desain penelitian ini adalah metode kuantitatif dengan desain quasi eksperimen dengan membandingkan dua kelas. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pre-test dan post-test. Kelas kontrol berjumlah 31 siswa dan kelas eksperimen berjumlah 31 siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penerapan pembelajaran berbasis tugas terhadap keterampilan berbicara siswa. Hal ini menunjukkan t hitung (3,852) lebih tinggi dibandingkan t tabel (2,004). Berikutnya, terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan pada keterampilan berbicara siswa yang diajar dengan pembelajaran berbasis tugas dan yang diajar tanpa pembelajaran berbasis tugas. Hal ini terbukti dengan nilai t hitung lebih besar dari t tabel (2,807 > 2,004). Terakhir, keterampilan berbicara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis tugas lebih baik dibandingkan siswa yang diajar tanpa menggunakan pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis tugas. Hal ini terbukti dengan peningkatan nilai rata-rata kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan nilai rata-rata kelas kontrol (9,08 > 3,72).

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of errors and the causes of students’ error in writing recount texts. The researchers found some student errors in the recount text at 9th grade SMP N 5 Kec.Kapur IX related to errors’ made by students. The first is that some students find it difficult to deliver idea in writing recount text. The second some students lack vocabulary so that students have difficulty in writing recount text. The last some students grammar have difficulties writing recount text. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The instruments of this research are documentation and interview. The informant of this research is all students of class IX SMP N 5 Kec.Kapur IX which consists of 2 classes. The sample from this study was 31 students who were taken through purposive sampling. This research was conducted in February 2022. To find the type of error in writing the recount text, the researcher checked the students’ recount text answer sheets, while the researcher interviewed the students and recorded it through the researchers phone. The results of this study indicate that there is one error in writing recount text that is the use of the simple past tense. While the cause of student error based on the results of interview are carelessness, first language interference and translation. In conclusion, this study was conducted to find out the types of errors and the causes of students’ errors in writing recount texts at 9th grade SMP N 5 Kec.Kapur IX.

Abstract

The design of this research was correlational research. This research aimed to find out the correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking skills at the twelfth grade of SMA N 2 Bukittinggi. The background of this research was there were several problems related to students’ self-confidence, and those problems were contrary to the theory. The population of this research was all of the twelfth-grade students of SMA N 2 Bukittinggi in the academic years of 2020/2021, which consists of 8 classes. The sample was 28 students taken by simple random sampling technique. The research results showed that there is a correlation between students’ self-confidence and their speaking skill. The researcher found that the coefficient of correlation between students’ self-confidence and their speaking skill was 0,286. There was a positive correlation and significance. It means that Ho is accepted. Thus, there is a positive correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking skills at the twelfth grade of SMA N 2 Bukittinggi.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of using dialogue technique in teaching speaking. The researcher has done at MTsN 7 Pasaman Barat. This research was carried out because the students had some problems in speaking English. It was caused by several factors there were the students had difficulties to say something or express their idea. Then, the students had limited vocabulary, so the students did not speak English well. Besides that the students lack of confidence in speaking and have low pronunciation ability. In addition the teacher used monotonous ways in students speaking practice. In this research a quasi-experimental design was used by the researcher. The researcher used pre-test and post-test to experimental class and control class. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of MTsN 7 Pasaman Barat. The sample was 8B as experimental class taught by using dialogue technique and 8A as control class and taught without using dialogue technique. To determine the sample, the experimental and control class, the researcher utilized SPSS 20 to examine the data and check for normality and homogeneity. The researcher utilized the t-test formula to test the hypothesis and consulted the results in a t-table with level of significance of 0.05. From the calculation of the research the pre-test and post-test score in experiment class, it was found that there was a significant effect of using dialogue technique in teaching speaking. It was proven by the value t-calculated of experimental class in pre-test and post-test was higher than t-table (6.042 > 2.021). Then there was a significant difference between students who were taught using dialogue technique and those who were taught without them. The value of t-calculated in post-test from the experimental and control classes was greater than t-table (5.883 > 2.021). The last hypothesis was that teaching with dialogue technique was higher than teaching without dialogue technique in terms of improving students speaking skill. In the post-test, the mean score of the experimental class was greater than the control class (14.174 > 0.174).

Abstract

This research was due to the problems that were found in SMPN 1 Ampek Angkek. The problems that were found were that students had difficulty in understanding the text, lack of vocabulary, and students were slow reader. Furthermore, the researcher also found that students who read slow scored higher than the students who read fast in reading comprehension. This research was quantitative research. The design of this research was correlational research. The researcher used two variables which they were variables X and variable Y. Variable X was students’ reading speed and variable Y was students’ reading comprehension. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique in this study. This means that the sample was taken randomly based on the class, and class IX 2 and IX 5 were chosen as the sample. There were 51 sample. For the method, the researcher asked the students to read the text. While the students were reading the text, the researcher counted the time by using a stopwatch. After collecting data, then the researcher analyzed students reading speed and the number of correct on the reading comprehension test. Furthermore, the correlation test was done by using SPSS. It was done to see whether there was a correlation between students’ reading speed and their comprehension. Based on the findings and discussions in this research, there were 3 finding of this research. First, there was no significant correlation between reading speed and reading comprehension. Second, there was positive correlation between two variables. Third, the correlation magnitude between two variables was low.  It can be concluded that this study against the theory that said close relationship between reading speed and reading comprehension. The data revealed that students with a high level of reading comprehension do not always have a high reading speed, and vice versa.

Abstract

This research was done to improve students’ reading comprehension through LRD (Listen-Read-Discussion) strategy. The background of this research was the eighth grade students of MTS At-Taqwa Jambi had the problem in reading comprehension including students reading comprehension was low, students were difficult to find the elements of reading and it was difficult for students to determine the main idea of the text. Furthermore, this research aimed to find out whether there was an improvement in students’ reading comprehension through LRD (Listen-Read-Discussion) strategy at among the eighth - grade students of MTS At-Taqwa Jambi. This research was a classroom action research (CAR). This classroom action research divided into two cycles that referred to the classroom action research procedures were planning, implementing of action, observing, and reflecting. The research data were collected through observation checklist and tests. The test was given to the students in form of a reading comprehension post-test at the end of learning at each cycle. The subject of this research was the eighth grade students of MTS At-Taqwa Jambi. The total number of students in the class was 22 students. The result of the analysis showed that the LRD (Listen-Read-Discussion) strategy could improve students reading comprehension. The result of students reading comprehension test was showed in two cycles. The result showed that there were improvements in students’ reading comprehension scores and reading activity through LRD (Listen-Read-Discussion) strategy. The result obtained by students in the cycle I the average score of the class was 58,52. In the cycle II results obtained by students the average score of the class was 75,57, also students were not difficult in finding the elements of reading in the text and more focused in reading the material in “Read” section. Based on the students’ results in cycle I and cycle II could be concluded that the minimum criteria for score was reached. The minimum criteria for the score (KKM) was 75. Furthermore, it could be conclude that the use of LRD (Listen-Read-Discussion) strategy  could improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study was motivated by several problems, such as the mismatch between the test questions and the material learned, unclear question instructions, and the lack of statistical analysis by English teachers. The main objective of this study was to identify the quality of English midterm test items for grade 7th students at SMPN 7 Bukittinggi, focusing on Validity, Reliability, difficulty level, Discrimination Power, and Distractor Effectiveness. The research method used was Quantitative Descriptive, with data collection through student answer sheets and analysis using various statistical formulas, including Point Biserial Correlation for validity, Spearman-Brown for reliability, and Narsya's formula for difficulty level and differentiating power, as well as Djumingin's formula for effectiveness. The results showed that most of the items were valid, and reliable, had a moderate difficulty level, and had good discriminating power, with only a few items showing minor problems. Overall, the English midterm exam items were considered good quality.
