Abstract

This study was conducted to address the issues observed in SMPN 30 Sijunjung. The identified issues were students' tendency to complan. when the teacher did not provide further explanation in Bahasa during audio activities, difficulty in comprehending native speakers due to their fast pace, lack of focus during video or movie-based listening activities, and confusion regarding certain vocabulary. The aim of this research is to compare the effectiveness of using video and audio as media in students' listening comprehension.A quantitative research approach was utilized in this study. The design was comparative with VIII.1 and VIII.2 as the sample classes, each taught using either video or audio. The data was collected through a listening test.Based on the data gathered from the eighth grade students of SMPN 30 Sijunjung, it was concluded that there is no significant difference in the overall scores of students' listening comprehension when using video or audio. However, the findings showed variations in specific listening skills, with the video group performing better in distinguishing sounds and the audio group excelling in decoding verbal messages. Additionally, both groups had similar levels of ability in perceiving and retaining the entire message. These results suggest that both video and audio can equally facilitate students' listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research related to the factors that influence of students achievement in the course schedule (Morning and afternoon). According to some experts, studied in the morning was more effective than in the afternoon and made the students achievement in the morning better than studied in the afternoon. However, based on the fact found in SMP N 12 Solok Selatan in seventh grade, it showed that average score students' English achievements were almost same between students who studied English in the morning and afternoon. Therefore, the researcher wanted to find out the factors causing there was no difference in students' English achievement results between morning and afternoon classes. Qualitative descriptive was the design in this research. Researcher used observation and interviews as the instrumentation. Seventh grade at SMPN 12 Solok Selatan as informants. To analyze the data, the researcher used the theory of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. Based on research results, the factors that make students English achievement the same were external factors, namely teacher and lesson standard. The teachers treatment and the way she taught was the same to all students, but when the teacher taught in the afternoon the teacher carried out several activities that made students re-focused and enthusiastic in learning, such as ice breaking and made joked with students. In conclusion, how the teachers taught both in the way they present the material and their creativity in creating learning condition that still conducive at all times, and also how the teachers attitude to students.

Abstract

In general, undergraduate students perceived Research Methodology course as a complex subject. The present study aims to find out undergraduate English Teaching Department students’ opinion on the implementation of Research Methodology course, students’ difficulties in mastering the topics of Research Methodology course, and factors affecting their difficulties in comprehending Research Methodology course in three State Islamic higher education in West Sumatera, Indonesia. The study was survey research with cross-sectional design. One hundred twenty-five active students enrolled in Research Methodology subjects participated in this study. Questionnaires were used to collect the data. The findings revealed that 66.65% students perceived that the Research Methodology course implemented properly; 67.74% students perceived that they comprehended quantitative research topics and 65.56% qualitative research topics; 75.30% students perceived that Research Methodology was a complex course; and dominant factor causing students’ difficulties in comprehending learning materials/topics was teaching and learning process (40.00%). It implies that a new and innovative teaching model should be developed by the lecturers in order to gain the aims of Research Methodology course and to help the students to be better in the learning engagement, critical thinking and research skills.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada pengaruh yang signifikan dari penggunaan strategi JAM terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris, untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris antara siswa yang menggunakan strategi JAM dan siswa yang tidak menggunakannya, dan untuk mengetahui apakah siswa yang menggunakan strategi JAM memiliki kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris yang lebih baik daripada siswa yang tidak menggunakannya. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kuantitatif, khususnya metode penelitian eksperimental, untuk menyelidiki pengaruh penggunaan strategi JAM terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kontrol pre-test post-test, di mana dua kelas dipilih sebagai sampel: satu kelompok eksperimen yang diberi perlakuan dengan strategi JAM dan satu kelompok kontrol yang diajar dengan menggunakan metode konvensional. Populasi terdiri dari 392 siswa dari kelas satu SMA N 2 Lubuk Basung, dan sampel ditentukan dengan menggunakan purposive sampling. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner pre-test dan post-test, dan dianalisis menggunakan uji-t untuk membandingkan skor rata-rata kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan teknik JAM memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa. Temuan tersebut mendukung ketiga hipotesis, yaitu: (1) terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan dari JAM terhadap kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa, (2) terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan dalam kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa antara mereka yang diajar menggunakan JAM dan mereka yang tidak, dan (3) siswa yang diajar menggunakan JAM memiliki kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris yang lebih baik daripada mereka yang tidak.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh teks acak sebagai variasi pengajaran membaca dan juga melihat perbedaan antara siswa yang tidak diajar dengan menggunakan teks acak. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimen. Peneliti menggunakan purposive sampling dalam menentukan sampel di mana kelas-kelas yang diajar oleh guru yang sama sebagai pertimbangan. Dari sini, X1 digunakan sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan X2 digunakan sebagai kelompok kontrol. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah tes pemahaman bacaan yang terdiri dari 20 item. Tes awal diberikan kepada kedua kelompok sebelum perawatan dan tes akhir diberikan setelah perawatan. Namun, perawatan hanya diberikan kepada kelompok eksperimen sedangkan kelompok kontrol diperlakukan dengan menggunakan cara yang sama seperti yang diajarkan guru mereka. Proses analisis data dilakukan melalui SPSS untuk menghindari kesalahan manusia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teks acak berpengaruh terhadap pemahaman bacaan siswa. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan hasil uji-t dimana t-diperoleh lebih besar dari t-tabel (8,774>1,711) atau nilai sig. lebih kecil dari alpha (0,000 < 0,05). Kemudian, kelompok eksperimen, yang menerima perlakuan teks acak, memiliki pemahaman bacaan yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol juga dibuktikan dengan hasil uji-t (3,158>1,711) dan skor rata-rata juga lebih tinggi daripada kelas kontrol (61,8> 50,8). Temuan penelitian ini memberikan bukti bahwa teks acak dapat menjadi alat yang berharga untuk meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan. Hasil penelitian ini memiliki implikasi yang signifikan bagi para pendidik yang mencari cara inovatif untuk meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan.

Abstract

This research was done because the researcher found several problems in students’ ability in learning English at SMAN 1 Padang Gelugur. The phenomenon was the teacher had used Quizizz application in learning English but the students’ ability in learning English was still variaties: the ability in Learning English of some of students was high and of some others was not, although the theories stated that using Quizizz application can help students to solve their problems in learning English. Hence, this research was done to know whether the Quizizz application is effective or not in teaching learning English for eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Padang Gelugur. The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative. The data was gotten through documentation of scores from students after using Quiziz application in learning English. The total of sample was 32 students of XI.1 – XI.4 classes. The researcher used simple random sampling in the determining the sample because the population was more than 100. To analyze the data collected, the researcher used rating scale table to see the level of effectiveness. The result is that Quizizz application is not effective in learning English. The result showed that the mean score of the students’ writing ability gotten was 53 %. This score lies in range 36% - 53%. It means, the Quizizz application is not effective in learning English in the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Padang gelugur.

Abstract

The vocabulary mastery of English students at the 2nd grade of SMP N 1 Harau was often constrained by the problem of the lack of students’ ability to remember vocabulary. Students had little vocabulary and they thought English was difficult to learn. The researcher tries to offer a strategy for teaching vocabulary by using "observe and remember" games.This research was conducted to know whether there was an effect of using the observe and remember game as a strategy in teaching vocabulary to improve students' vocabulary mastery. The research used a quantitative approach with a research design used a quasi-experimental. In this study, the researcher used 2 classes as the sample class, which consisted of the experimental class and the control class. The results showed that there was a significant effect of using the observe and remember game in mastering vocabulary. The researcher found the mean score of the post-test was 68,00. It was higher than the pre-test was 34,06 and obtained that the t-calculatedwas 14,46 bigger than the t-table was 2.042. It means that the Ha was accepted. In addition, there was a significant difference between the students who were taught by using the observe and remember game (68,00) and the students who were taught without using the observe and remember game (51,58). The observe and remember game was effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery in the 2nd grade students of SMP N 1 Harau.

Abstract

This research was motivated by several problems of class VII students of SMPN 2 Dua Koto, Pasaman Regency related to learning English such as vocabulary and speaking. One of them is that some students have low scores in the vocabulary test and speaking test, the students' low ability to speak English, they do not have enough vocabulary. Therefore, this study was conducted so that the researchers found out whether there was a relationship between the students' vocabulary and the speaking achievement of the fifth grade students of SMPN 2 Dua Koto. This study uses a quantitative approach to the type of correlation design. The population in this study were all class VII at SMPN 2 Dua Koto consisting of 3 classes with a sample consisting of 72 students taken through total sampling technique. Data was collected through a vocabulary test and speaking test. The results showed that there was a relationship between vocabulary and speaking ability of seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Dua Koto for the academic year 2020/2021. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that vocabulary has a positive important role for speaking ability. That is, if students have a large vocabulary, then they will have good speaking skills. on the other hand, if students have low vocabulary, they have low speaking ability. So, this study was conducted to find the relationship between vocabulary and speaking ability of students in the seventh grade of SMPN 2 Dua Koto, Pasaman Regency. Abstrak Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh beberapa masalah siswa kelas VII SMPN 2 Dua Koto Kabupaten Pasaman terkait dengan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris seperti vocabulary dan speaking. Diantaranya siswa memiliki nilai yang rendah dalam tes kosa kata dan tes berbicara, rendahnya kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris, mereka tidak memiliki kosakata yang cukup. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dilakukan agar peneliti mengetahui apakah ada hubungan antara kosa kata siswa dengan pencapaian berbicara siswa kelas Vll SMPN 2 Dua Koto. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan jenis design korelasi. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh kelas Vll di SMPN 2 Dua Koto terdiri 3 kelas dengan sampel yang terdiri 72 siswa yang diambil melalui teknik total sampling. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui test kosa kata dan test berbicara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan antara kosakata dan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas VII SMPN 2 Dua Koto tahun ajaran 2020/2021. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kosakata memiliki peran penting yang positif bagi kemampuan berbicara. Artinya, jika siswa memiliki kosakata yang banyak, maka mereka akan memiliki kemampuan berbicara yang baik. sebaliknya, jika siswa memiliki kosa kata yang rendah, mereka memiliki kemampuan berbicara yang rendah. Jadi, penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menemukan hubungan antara kosakata dan kemampuan berbicara siswa di kelas tujuh SMPN 2 Dua Koto, Kabupaten Pasaman.
