Abstract

This paper examines the religious dynamics image in contemporary Indonesia was presented by the printed mass media. Using van Dijk's critical discourse analysis method, and the hierarchy of influence media content of Pamela Shoemaker and Stephen Reese, this paper examines the content of popular articles in the Kompas and Republika for the period 2013-2017. These two print media were chosen because they are two different ideological poles. Kompas was born from Catholic activists and supported by several military officers. Meanwhile, Republika was founded by Islamic activists with government support. The themes of popular articles in both media revolve around issues of the state and democracy, political dynamics and Islamic parties, and spirituality. The religious discourse contest at Kompas and Republika was filled with Muslim scholars and leaders of Islamic mass organizations. Kompas does not provide enough space for new writers so that its popular articles are filled by monotonous scholars. On the other hand, Republika has promoted many new writers. However, Republika also features internal writers. Popular articles from Kompas and Republika put forward a moderate religious face. However, Republika seems to emphasize the Islamic side more, while Kompas appears to be more inclusive.

Abstract

The advent of science and technology, which has resulted in the digitalization of the Indonesian Muslim community during the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and the advent of Society 5.0, has prompted a shift in the religious literature of Indonesian Muslims. This research aims to examine the impact of digitalization in the post-truth era on the behavior of Muslims who tend to seek solutions to their religious problems outside the traditional religious authority. The data sources for this study were collected through observation, interviews, and a review of relevant literature in the form of documents or online data. In terms of socio-religious factors, this research identified three key elements that have contributed to the shift in the religious literature of Indonesian Muslims from the ulama to social media. Firstly, the internet and social media provide Muslims with convenient access to information and resources that can address their daily religious concerns promptly and effectively. Secondly, the rise in community religious activity has not been accompanied by a corresponding increase in digital literacy, particularly in the use of social media. Thirdly, the solutions to religious problems obtained by Muslims through social media are immediate, leading to a less comprehensive and more partial understanding of Islam. Digitalization has led Indonesian Muslims to be more pragmatic in search of religious meaning.

Abstract

This article examines the political discourse of the Minang ethnic group in the Presidential Elections (Pilpres) of 2014 and 2019. In both elections, the Minang candidates did not win nationally but achieved a landslide victory in the West Sumatra province. This has created a stigma for the Minang ethnic group as one with a strong political identity and a province with a hardline stance. This study aims to understand the political discourse of the Minang ethnic group in choosing national leaders. The study employs Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach, which identifies four interconnected dimensions: linguistic, discursive, social, and ideological. This research is a qualitative study using critical analysis methods. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with Minang figures (traditional leaders, religious figures, politicians, academics, and cultural figures). The findings indicate that the political communication of the Minang ethnic group did not undergo a shift in perspective when it comes to viewing leadership issues. For the Minang ethnic group, a leader is highly regarded and given priority. Leaders must possess the qualities of "takah" (personal capacity and capability) and "tageh" (strength and firmness in attitude and action). Additionally, they must be recognized and accepted by the public as prominent figures. The most important factors for the Minang ethnic group in choosing a leader are shared religious beliefs, an egalitarian attitude, and adherence to customary values. The Minang ethnic group is willing to accept political defeat to maintain their belief-based selection of leaders.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of Islamic preaching from traditional spaces to digital platforms, focusing on the experiences of state religious counselors in West Sumatra. The unit of analysis is the group of penyuluh agama (religious counselors) under Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs who are adapting their da'wah practices to the algorithmic dynamics of social media. The study aims to explore their level of digital literacy, the challenges they encounter in online preaching, and how these affect their religious authority in a digitally mediated society. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving 19 counselors across several districts, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings reveal that most counselors possess low digital literacy and rely on informal learning, resulting in limited online engagement and visibility. Challenges include a lack of technical training, inadequate institutional support, and fear of online misinterpretation. However, participants recognize the potential of digital media to expand da'wah outreach if supported by structured literacy programs and creative content strategies. This study contributes to understanding how state religious authority is being reconfigured in the digital age and provides policy insights for strengthening digital competence within Islamic counseling institutions.

Abstract

This study addresses a pressing contemporary issue in Muslim communities: the ethical and jurisprudential dilemma surrounding the boycott of products linked to Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. While such boycotts—endorsed by fatwas like MUI No. 83/2023—are framed as acts of economic solidarity, a critical concern arises when Muslims produce alternative goods that resemble boycotted items: does this constitute tasabbuh (imitation of non-Muslims), which is prohibited in several hadiths? The research aims to reinterpret the classical concept of tasabbuh within the framework of a “living hadith” approach, examining whether functional imitation—without intent to emulate beliefs or identity—violates Islamic norms. Using a qualitative methodology, the study combines textual analysis of primary hadith sources (including Sunan Abi Dawud, Sahih al-Bukhari, and Musnad Ahmad) with empirical observation of Muslim consumer behavior and fatwa discourse in Indonesia. Findings reveal that tasabbuh is primarily defined by intention (niyyah) and context, not mere formal similarity. When imitation serves a legitimate purpose—such as resisting injustice, ensuring economic self-reliance, or fulfilling communal welfare—it falls outside the scope of prohibited tasabbuh. This reinterpretation aligns with higher objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah) and classical legal maxims (qawāʿid fiqhiyyah), particularly the principle that “matters are judged by their intentions.” The study’s novelty lies in bridging textual hermeneutics with real-world activism, offering a nuanced ethical framework for Muslim economic resistance. It is recommended that Islamic institutions and scholars issue clearer guidelines distinguishing between prohibited cultural imitation and permissible functional replication, especially in contexts of political and economic justice. Such clarity can empower Muslim communities to engage in ethical consumerism without compromising religious identity.

Abstract

Purpose – This study formulates a strategic framework for religious counselors in producing creative and effective da’wah content on social media. It responds to the urgent need for transitioning from conventional sermon-based communication to multiplatform strategies that align with digital audience behavior and algorithmic engagement. Method – An exploratory, qualitative design was employed, utilizing van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The dataset comprises 50 short videos purposively collected from TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels (January–June 2025), selected based on their thematic relevance and audience engagement (more than 10,000 views or 100 likes). Each video was examined at macro (theme), mezzo (narrative), and micro (language) levels to identify meaning construction and ideological framing. Result – The findings reveal that audience engagement in digital da'wah is primarily driven by brevity, emotional proximity, and contextual themes rather than clerical authority. Religious messages that employ informal storytelling, humor, and local language tend to achieve a stronger connection with the audience. These dynamics reflect a transformation of religious authority from institutional to participatory and algorithmic forms. Implication – The study provides a practical model for religious counselors to enhance digital literacy, narrative creativity, and ethical awareness in content production. It encourages the institutionalization of digital training within religious outreach programs under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Originality/Value – This research fills a conceptual gap in the existing literature by integrating critical discourse analysis with creative media production. It contributes to the emerging scholarship on digital religion through a model that bridges theological communication, media literacy, and participatory culture.
