Abstract

This study explores the strategies used by English teachers to reduce students’ anxiety when speaking English in the classroom. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with teachers and students at a junior high school. The findings reveal that students' speaking anxiety often stems from limited vocabulary, fear of making mistakes, and low self-confidence. To address these challenges, teachers implemented various strategies, including role-play activities, the use of dictionaries and digital pronunciation tools, interactive games, and emotional support through motivational feedback. These approaches helped create a supportive and engaging learning environment, encouraging students to participate more actively and confidently in speaking tasks. By tailoring instructional strategies to students’ needs and classroom conditions, teachers were able to foster a more positive attitude toward learning English. This study highlights the crucial role of effective teaching practices in mitigating language learning anxiety and offers practical insights for improving English-speaking skills among junior high school learners.

Abstract

It is crucial to start teaching English to children at a young age because of how important it is to learn it. In practice, English is not an easy language to teach to elementary school students. There are several main reasons why English is difficult to teach, the first is that English words and sentences are difficult to pronounce because they are written and pronounced differently. In addition, the lack of teacher skills in terms of mastering teaching techniques and methods makes students less interested in learning English. Abstract

One of the important factors that influences the success of learning is the teacher's understanding of students' learning styles. This community service activity aimed to enhance teachers’ understanding and skills in identifying students’ learning styles through the use of the digital application “VAK-ZA Learning Style Identification”. The program was conducted on August 7–8, 2025, at SMP Negeri 28 Satap Salenrang, Maros Regency, involving 18 training participants consisting of teachers and staff, as well as 179 students who installed the “VAK-ZA Learning Style Identification” application. The application was developed in two formats, namely web and APK versions, which can be used both online and offline, making it flexible for various school infrastructure conditions. The implementation of the program included the socialization of Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic (VAK) learning style concepts, training in using the application, mentoring for student identification practices, and follow-up discussions on integrating the results into differentiated instruction. The results showed an improvement in teachers’ knowledge of learning style concepts as well as their skills in operating the application. Based on questionnaires, 100% of participants considered the application easy to use, useful, and relevant to learning needs. The application has proven effective in accelerating the identification process of learning styles and providing applicable teaching strategy recommendations. These findings affirm that collaboration between universities and schools can produce technology-based learning innovations that have the potential to be replicated in other schools.
