Abstract

Kidney failure is a growing public health problem, including among adolescents, largely influenced by unhealthy lifestyles and poor dietary habits. Early prevention through health education is essential to reduce the risk of kidney disease in the future. This community service program aimed to improve adolescents’ knowledge and awareness regarding healthy lifestyles and balanced dietary patterns for the prevention of kidney failure. The program was implemented at SMA Muhammadiyah Al Kautsar PK Kartasura and targeted senior high school students using an Active Learning approach, including group discussions, simulations, role play, interactive quizzes, and case studies. The activities began with early health screening, such as blood pressure measurement, body mass index assessment, and random blood glucose testing, followed by interactive health education sessions. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test assessments to measure changes in students’ knowledge levels. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in knowledge, with the proportion of students categorized as having good knowledge increasing from 18.82% in the pre-test to 91.76% in the post-test. In addition, students showed high enthusiasm and active participation throughout the program.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the health problems that often occur in the elderly and is the main risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The management of hypertension is not only carried out with pharmacological therapy, but also through non-pharmacological interventions such as physical exercise. One of the exercises that is easy to do is the isometric handgrip exercise which can lower blood pressure through increased vascular tone and adaptation of the autonomic nervous system. This study is a case study on four hypertensive patients, namely Mrs. M (72 years old), Mrs. S (69 years old), Mr. J (50 years old), and Mr. S (54 years old). The intervention was carried out by measuring blood pressure before and after isometric handgrip exercises for 4 minutes with a 30-second break while taking deep breaths. The results showed a decrease in blood pressure in most patients, namely in Mrs. M from 217/57 to 214/74 mmHg, Mrs. S from 143/76 to 141/73 mmHg, and Mr. S from 173/108 to 166/131 mmHg, while Mr. J experienced an increase in blood pressure after exercise. Overall, this exercise has a positive effect on blood pressure stability. Isometric handgrip exercise can be used as a simple and effective non-pharmacological intervention in the management of hypertension.

Abstract

Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis often experience anxiety due to physical, psychological, and social changes. One non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety is the recitation therapy of the Holy Qur’an (murotal), particularly Surah Ar-Rahman, which provides a calming effect through spiritual stimulation and relaxation. This study aimed to determine the effect of murotal Surah Ar-Rahman therapy on anxiety levels among CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis in the Lavender Room of RSUD Ir. Soekarno, Sukoharjo Regency. The study employed a case study approach involving four patients, with anxiety levels measured using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-42) before and after the intervention. The murotal therapy was played for approximately 15 minutes prior to the hemodialysis procedure. The results showed a decrease in anxiety scores from the moderate to the mild category, with an average reduction from 11.5 to 7. Additionally, depression and stress scores also decreased, accompanied by more stable blood pressure following the intervention. In conclusion, the murotal therapy of Surah Ar-Rahman effectively reduced anxiety levels among CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis. This intervention can serve as a complementary spiritual nursing therapy to enhance patients’ comfort and well-being.
