Abstract

Abstract This article probes to understanding the dynamics of multinational companies (MNC) versus least developed countries (LDC). The multinational company that is the object of this study is H&M, which has a base in Sweden as a home country. Then, this study focuses on H&M with its phenomenon of fast fashion, penetrating into Bangladesh and making it a host country to run the clothing production process to meet global consumption. Bangladesh itself is a least developed country whose national economic growth, especially in the export sector, is highly dependent on the garment industry. Therefore, this study will try to answer the phenomenon of the role of H&M in Bangladesh with the research question what are the implications of the growing H&M industry for workers in Bangladesh in 2005-2011? This problem will be seen through the lens of international political economy (IPE) with a focus on the interaction of multinational companies and less developed countries. Keywords: MNCs, LDCs, H&M, Bangladesh, Fast Fashion

Abstract

This paper analyzes Indonesia's economic diplomacy efforts in overcoming trade barriers to Indonesian palm oil commodities carried out by the European Union. Until now, the Indonesian Crude Palm Oil (CPO) industry has experienced tremendous pressure from the European Union (EU) as one of the main export destinations for Indonesian CPO. In order to secure Indonesia's national interests, instead of taking a cooperative approach, the Indonesian government has responded to the EU's discriminatory attitude towards palm oil commodities with a series of assertive economic diplomacy approaches. This assertive economic diplomacy approach is understood by this paper as a form of the “Power-Play End” strategy articulated by Indonesia to secure its national interests in mainland Europe. The main question in this paper that will be answered is how can Indonesia use this strategy in overcoming trade barriers imposed by the EU on palm oil commodities? Using the concept of Economic Diplomacy which emphasizes three elements, namely the use of political influence and relations, the use of economic assets, the consolidation of the political climate and the international environment - this paper will examine Indonesia's economic diplomacy maneuver in related issues.

Abstract

The agenda of Jokowi’s administration demands a strong measure to protect maritime security and sovereignty of Indonesia; especially its national sovereignty and maritime security in the vast boundary of Indonesian territorial waters. However, the implementation faces challenges related to violations of sovereignty in the territorial waters. One of them was due to the rampant illegal fishing activities that threaten the sufficiency of the fish stock. Exposed to such threat, Indonesia’s commitment to secure its maritime sovereignty was strongly projected by the emergence of a ‘Sink the Vessels’ policy by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), chaired by Susi Pudjiastuti since 2014. In the context of the South China Sea polemics which shows the relationship with the territorial waters of Indonesia in Natuna, the policy has significant implication to the South China Sea maritime geopolitics. The question is what the implications of the ‘Sink the Vessels’ policy toward maritime geopolitics in the South China Sea. Using structuration and geopolitics approaches, this article argues that Indonesia’s IUU Fishing policy enhances the complexity of maritime security in the South China Sea which ultimately leads to the strengthening of political realism behaviour among countries whom potential to conflict with Indonesia in the context of IUU Fishing in Natuna waters.

Abstract

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama’s blasphemy case reaped various reactions and criticisms. In the “Action of Defending Islam 212”, where Muslims in Indonesia expressed their anger, the masses demanded that religious blasphemers be brought to justice. It caused a series of demonstrations in Indonesia and instability in their domestic security, especially Jakarta as the capital city. This movement was widely known as the wave of right-wing populism in Indonesia. To respond to an extreme right-wing political movement in Indonesian society, the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security made efforts to persuade the community after the movement. This effort was significant in managing the widening of the narrative and reminding those who used the approach anchor base or key people and communities to help spread the message.

Abstract

China is experiencing a fast and dynamic phase of economic development driven by its fast pace of industrialisation. The vast energy demand has pushed China to import energy from other countries with plentiful natural resources. To this aim, China conducts economic diplomacy worldwide, including Angola, a country with plentiful natural resources in Africa. The main concern of this research is China's economic diplomacy which is considered as a form of neocolonialism in this globalisation era. Therefore, the research question of this research is why China's economic diplomacy towards Angola constitutes neocolonialisation. To this aim, this study utilises the Neocolonialism theory in dissecting China's Economic Diplomacy against Angola. This study uses qualitative method with a case study approach using secondary data. Thus, the basis for this research is the author's interpretation. This research concludes that China's economic diplomacy towards Angola constitutes neocolonialisation since the economic means that China exerts on Angola enables China to indirectly control Angola's politics, economy and natural resources, which in turn leads to Angola's dependence on China.

Abstract

This paper  seeks  to  analyze  Indonesia’s  multilateral  diplomacy  under  President  Joko  Widodo (Jokowi)during his first term of presidency(2014-2019). Specifically, this research will be focusing on threemultilateral forums; G20, APEC, and East Asia Summit. Thispaper departs from the puzzle of why Jokowi’s foreign policy seems to be paradoxical; on one hand, the bilateral approach looks very prominent but on the other, Jokowi does not seem to be very keen in engaging in multilateral forums. Using  bilateral-multilateral  nexus,  this  paper  argues  that  Indonesia’s  participation  in  multilateral forums  is  only  intended  as  a  means  of  pursuing  short-term  interests  rather  than  to  contributing  to global  norms.  Jokowi  uses  multilateralism  just  as  a  venue  to  arrange  further bilateral  cooperation with potential partners.

Abstract

Assessing the effectiveness of international regimes has become a central topic for scholars and policymakers. Realist argues that national interests determine whether or not states comply with international regimes. This article offers an alternative account by analyzing the anatomy of the agreement. Using the case study of the “ASEAN Five-Point Consensus” on Myanmar, this article employs the concept of legalization derived from institutionalist theory which is used to assess the degree of institutionalization of the international agreements characterized by three dimensions; obligation, precision, and delegation. The central thesis of this article is that the “ASEAN Five-Point Consensus” on Myanmar is a sort of soft law due to its strong weakness in three dimensions. It implies that the agreement will not be properly implemented by ASEAN member countries, especially by Myanmar’s military junta. This article concludes that the effectiveness of the “ASEAN Five-Point Consensus” on Myanmar depends not only on the states’ national interests but also on the degree of institutionalization of this agreement. The soft law character of this agreement is strongly influenced by the culture of ASEAN’s decision-making mechanism which puts a strong emphasis on the consensus in crafting non-obligatory agreements.

Abstract

Indonesia’s strategic agenda to become the Global Maritime Fulcrum creates the discourse related to its existence in the context of maritime security in Southeast Asia. The emergence of Indonesia’s political realism to maintain the sovereignty of its waters has fueled various maritime insecurity problems that have occurred in Indonesian waters so far. Drawing from abovementioned context, this paper provides an analysis related to the various dynamics, challenges and issues of maritime security in Southeast Asia that surrounds Indonesia’s Global Maritime Fulcrum. Using traditional and non-traditional security study approaches in understanding maritime security, this paper examines various maritime insecurity issues faced by Indonesia, especially in the context of the Global Maritime Fulcrum agenda.

Abstract

This study aims to determine Indonesia's strategy in implementing cultural diplomacy and soft power diplomacy through the cultural event ‘The Symphony of Friendship’ by the Indonesian Embassy in New Zealand. Using a descriptive qualitative research method with data collection techniques through semi-structured in-depth interviews, which are then analyzed in depth supported by trust checking techniques through triangulation of data sources. The findings in this study are cultural diplomacy aimed at building Indonesia's image in the South Pacific region in dealing with separatist issues in Papua, which have been raised internationally by several countries, namely Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea. The TSF was conducted to build a perception of Indonesia in the Pacific community as a colonialist against Papua, presenting a positive perception so that Indonesia is not seen as carrying out repression in Papua through a cultural approach and embracing the community to work together and encourage togetherness through a musical approach.
