Abstract

This article explores two narratives of hijra celebrities regarding whether they completely abandon playing music or continue to play it under certain conditions after experiencing a spiritual transformation (hijra). The data of this article was collected through online sources such as news articles, social media posts, and videos that were relevant to the research question. The two celebrities, Mohammad Kautsar Hikmat (UKI) and Derry Sulaiman, were both previously involved in the Indonesian music industry and have now adopted differing attitudes towards music after their spiritual transformation. Uki chose to leave the music industry as he interpreted his spiritual transformation, or hijrah, as requiring him to withdraw from elements that he believed could hinder his spiritual growth such as music. He interacted with the Salafi community who promote a literal interpretation of Islam and believe music is a hindrance to spiritual growth. Derry, on the other hand, chose to continue his involvement in the music industry as he believed that music could be a tool for spreading positive messages and preaching the word of Islam without interfering with his religious duties. He interacted with a more diverse Muslim community inlcuding Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah that demonstrated how Islam can be practiced in various ways and adapt to cultural contexts. The article uses Bernard Weiner's interpersonal and intrapersonal theory to explain how the two celebrities interpreted the role of music in their religious lives. The findings show the importance of understanding both interpersonal and intrapersonal factors when exploring how celebrities interpret and apply religious principles to their lives. This article provides important insights into the complexities of the relationship between music and Islam, and how spiritual transformation can affect an individual’s view on music.

Abstract

This article seeks to answer why the Japanese chose KH. Hasyim Asy’ari as the chairman of Masyumi during their occupation in Indonesia (1942-1945). The data was collected from library research by scrutinizing paper and academic works that discuss Indonesia from the 1920s to its independence in 1945. This period is important to understand the historical and political conditions of the country at that time. This article also refers to two magazines of Suara MIAI that began publishing in December 1942 and Suara Masyumi Magazine issued from December 1943 onward. This article argues that the Japanese decision to choose Hadratussyaikh was based on political motivation, especially to get the support of the Muslim community for Japanese efforts to fight Allied forces in the Pacific war.

Abstract

The relationship between Bani Alawi (Ba 'Alawi) and the ulama of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has been documented in many historical records of Indonesia. However, how the relationship started and for what motive is not yet known. In this edition, the editorial team of the Tebuireng Journal of Islamic Studies (TJISS) publishes an edited transcript of a webinar on the history of the relationship between Habaib and NU which was held on December 20, 2020, by the Faculty of Islamic Studies (FAI), Universitas Hasyim Asy'ari (Unhasy). This transcript is the presentation of Ismail Fajrie Alatas, one of the editorial boards of TJISS, who currently works as Assistant Professor of Middle-Eastern & Islamic Studies at New York University, United States. Alatas has written many academic works in the form of books and journals with a focus on the theme of Islam in the Indian Ocean world particularly, the historical and contemporary connections between Southeast Asia and South Arabia. Alatas’ writings examine the intersections of religious authority, social formation, mobility, semiotics, and communicative practice with a focus on Islamic Law, Sufism, and the Hadrami diaspora in Indonesia (that is, those who trace their origins to the Hadramawt valley of Southern Yemen). In the discussion held in the webinar, Alatas explained that the initial relationship between Habaib and the ulama who later founded the organization of Nahdlatul Ulama was formed as a challenge to the Islamic court-style of “Javanese Islam” that dominated the archipelago in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the midnight sun presents unique challenges for people living in countries that experience prolonged daylight. One issue in these regions is the application of iḥtiyāṭ (precautionary measures) in religious practices, such as determining prayer times and fasting hours according to Islamic teachings. This article explores the socio-religious implications of time management in countries experiencing the midnight sun phenomenon, focusing on its impact on Muslim communities. Through qualitative analysis of literature, case studies, and religious texts, this research examines the challenges faced by Muslims in fulfilling religious obligations amidst extended daylight hours. The study also investigates the responses and adaptations made by religious authorities and community members to address the scheduling of prayer times in countries with midnight sun. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the intersection between natural phenomena, cultural traditions, and religious practices by highlighting this rarely discussed aspect of religious observance in regions with unique daylight patterns.
