Abstract

Abstract

Restrictions of the visitor on the tourism places is one of the mechanism of health protocol that carried out during the new normal era. This restriction become a dilemma since the manager of the tourism places want to maximize their profit by allowing all visitor, while the government still limiting the number of visitor to avoid crowding. Otherwise, real-time monitoring of the number of visitor somewhat difficult since they can come in and leave the tourism places at any time. In this study we implement the queuing theory to solve this problem. The visitor of the tourism places is modelled as the customer, while the time spent by them in the tourism places is modelled as the serving duration. By estimating the average of time spent by the visitor and determine the average number of arrivals during the specified time, the number of visitor in the tourism place can be estimated as the number of people in the queuing system. As a preliminary study, this paper only focused on two queuing model, namely the M/M/1 and M/G/1. Further study is needed to develop the model and calibrate it using the data from a specified tourism place.

Abstract

The optimal portfolio is a portfolio that can provide maximum returns at the same level of risk. In investing, the term "high return, high risk" is known, meaning that the higher the return, the higher the risk. Therefore, investors need to develop an optimal portfolio to obtain the maximum return on investment at the same level of risk. This study aims to determine the optimal formation of a stock portfolio by calculating transaction costs using the genetic algorithm method on stocks that are members of the Jakarta Islamic Index. This research uses data of daily return on stocks included in Jakarta Islamic Index from 1 August 2020-1 August 2022. The dataset consists of two variables: the date of observation and daily stock returns. The method used in this study is the minimum variance method and the genetic algorithm. Data analysis was divided into two stages: model formulation and model testing through case studies. The analysis of optimal portfolio formation using genetic algorithms shows that in terms of performance, the minimum variance portfolio is superior to the genetic algorithm portfolio, as indicated by the Sharpe ratio value. Meanwhile, the genetic algorithm portfolio is superior to the minimum variance portfolio regarding transaction costs. The genetic algorithm portfolio can provide a fairly high total return, small transaction costs, and good performance compared to the minimum portfolio. Hence, the genetic algorithm portfolio is worthy of recommendation to investors.

Abstract

How Economics-Socio-Cultural Status affect Indonesian Students’ Performance in Mathematics? an Insight from PISA 2012-2022. To date, the average mathematics performance of Indonesian students in PISA tends to be unchanged, and lower than that of OECD countries. However, PISA participants in Indonesia consist of students from five to six different grades. Objectives: This research aims to determine how Economic-Socio-Cultural Status (ESCS) and student grades influence Indonesian students' mathematics performance. Methods: We apply a quantitative approach using multiple linear regression analysis methods using the PISA 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2022 datasets. In this analysis, we also use the weight of each sample and the overall plausible value for mathematics performance. Findings: we found a significant relation between education level and ESCS regarding students' overall mathematics performance in PISA from 2012 to 2022. The interaction coefficient increases as the level increases from grade 8 of junior secondary school to grade 11. Conclusion: ESCS has a contribution to the diversity of students' mathematics performance at the same grade. From 2012 to 2022, the relative position of Indonesian students' ESCS compared to all participant has declined, although its influence on student mathematics performance tends to decline. Keywords: PISA, mathematics, Indonesia.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i3.2024122

Abstract

Many research about portfolio optimization in Indonesia still uses the ‘original’ mean-variance model as proposed by Markowitz more than 60 years ago. This article reviews the development and modification of the Markowitz’s mean-variance model, especially that dealing with real stock-market features, which could help the investor to create their own portfolio. There were several real-stock market features that implemented in the modification of mean-variance portfolios optimization models, such as the minimum transaction lots, the transaction cost, the cardinality constraint, the weight constraint, and the sectoral constraint. To implement these features, several heuristic methods were used to obtain the optimal portfolio weight, such as genetic algorithm, Tabu search, bee colony algorithm, particle swarm algorithm, and simulated annealing. These methods become alternative to the mathematical programming method.

Abstract

The low science achievement of Indonesian students in PISA 2018 is still a challenge for Indonesian education stakeholders. For a long time, socio-economic conditions, low interest in reading, and low motivation have often been the causes of these achievements. This study aims to examine the effects of socio-economic status, reading habits, and gender on Indonesian students' science achievements in PISA 2018. To represent the motivation variable, teacher support, parental support, and self-efficacy are placed as mediating variables toward science achievements. Using the path analysis mediation model implemented in R statistical software, we find that economic-social and cultural status, reading habits, and gender have a direct impact on students' science achievement. In addition, socio-economic and cultural status indirectly affects students' science achievement, mediated by teacher support, parental support, and self-efficacy. Reading habits indirectly affect students' science achievement, mediated by teacher support, parental support, and self-efficacy. Last, gender indirectly affects students' science achievement, mediated by parental support and self-efficacy, but does not affect students' scientific literacy scores when mediated by teacher support. Overall, gender has an indirect effect on students' science achievement.

Abstract

Students' science achievement is one indicator of a country's progress in science and technology. Until 2022, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey showed that Indonesian 15-year-old students' science achievement was still lower than that of OECD countries. This study aims to explore factors related to students' science achievement at the student and school levels in Indonesia. Although it dates to 10 years, we use the PISA 2015 datasets since it is focused on science and includes several variables that are not available in either PISA 2018 or 2022. We use multilevel modeling implemented in R statistical software. We find that 50.9% of the total variance in students' science achievement is attributable to differences among students (level 1), while the remaining variance is associated with school differences (level 2). In addition, the random-slope model outperformed the random-intercept and null models. Student-level variables significantly influencing students' science achievement are gender, the socioeconomic and cultural status index, science enjoyment, self-efficacy, and epistemological beliefs about science. Meanwhile, school-level variables significant for students' science ability include school type and the disciplinary climate in science classes. Further improvements and studies are needed to increase Indonesian students' science achievement in PISA 2025.
