Abstract

This study addresses EFL students' challenges at a state university in Mataram, Indonesia, in constructing passive voices in the present and past tense. This study was focused on verb tense changes, subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, and appropriate use of "by" in passive voice constructions. It also aims to explore the causes of these issues and offers insights into potential solutions. With a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were collected using a set of written grammatical tests of passive voices and open interviews. The adopted validated test was completed by thirty students as the participants of this study. The data were analyzed descriptively using an in-depth reading analysis method on the test results and participant responses. The results reveal a need for fundamental grammatical knowledge, limited exposure to passive voice, inadequate practice opportunities, and unclear explanations as contributing factors to the challenges. Language transfer from native languages and a lack of feedback compound the problem. To address these issues, the study recommends basic tense understanding, increased practice, targeted feedback, and exposure to authentic materials to enhance students' proficiency in constructing accurate passive voice sentences.

Abstract

Transitivity is one of the syntactical studies that is affected by morphology. This article describes how transitivity is expressed and how transitive are the verbs in the constructions of clauses in the Bima Language. Transitivity in the Bima Language is mostly expressed using basic verbs which can be syntactically used as verbs in clauses. Apart from this, prefix ka- with its variant ca- is used to derive transitive from intransitive verbs and nonverbal categories. Meanwhile, particle kai and wea are used to derive ditransitive from transitive verbs. The transitivity of verbs in the Bima Language varies from one to another. Whether the verbs are said to have high or low transitive, it depends on how they fulfill the transitive parameter (Hooper and Thompson, 1989). Form 10 parameters of transitivity, there are four parameters which fit the Bima Language transitivity, such as participant (agents and patients), affectedness of patient, potency of agent, and volitionality. The constructions which are considered as high transitive is that if the constructions use action verbs rather than state verbs and mental verbs. It is found out that action verbs can cause the agents of the clause to take control on the activities, can affect the patients, and intensively can cause the agent to do the activities expressed by the verbs deliberately and intensively.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose of Study: Exploring the students’ motivations for studying in the English departments, comparing career choices and interests based on gender, and determining the ‘time’ and reasons for shifting careers. Methodology: This study employed mixed methods. The sample was drawn through proportional random sampling and involved 1100 students from the English departments in Lombok, Indonesia. 380 male and 820 female students, more than 25 percent of the total, filled out the Google Forms questionnaire. The data were collected through questionnaires and academic documents. Quantitative data analysis employed descriptive statistics, while qualitative analysis used ‘Iterative Analysis.’ Main Findings: 1) Being a teacher is the primary motivation for studying in the English departments; 2) Females far dominate men in the choice of the teaching profession, while males in the tourism and hospitality sector; 3) But, career choice shift occurs at the end of the study motivated by socio-economic orientation. So, curriculum developers should consider biological and socio-cultural aspects of English education gender. Further studies should be conducted on the interrelation of gender and socio-cultural and religious perspectives. Novelty/Originality of this Study: The choice of work of the students of the English departments in Indonesia is still determined by its suitability with gender. Some studies on career shifts in universities have been carried out, but a specific study that explored the career choice shift of English department students based on gender has never been carried out. This is the ‘novelty.’ Nevertheless, this study did not include the students’ religion-based educational background.
