Abstract

This study addresses EFL students' challenges at a state university in Mataram, Indonesia, in constructing passive voices in the present and past tense. This study was focused on verb tense changes, subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, and appropriate use of "by" in passive voice constructions. It also aims to explore the causes of these issues and offers insights into potential solutions. With a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were collected using a set of written grammatical tests of passive voices and open interviews. The adopted validated test was completed by thirty students as the participants of this study. The data were analyzed descriptively using an in-depth reading analysis method on the test results and participant responses. The results reveal a need for fundamental grammatical knowledge, limited exposure to passive voice, inadequate practice opportunities, and unclear explanations as contributing factors to the challenges. Language transfer from native languages and a lack of feedback compound the problem. To address these issues, the study recommends basic tense understanding, increased practice, targeted feedback, and exposure to authentic materials to enhance students' proficiency in constructing accurate passive voice sentences.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the SQ3R technique in improving the reading ability of tenth-grade students at MA Thohir Yasin, with a focus on measuring reading skills before and after the implementation of the technique. A pre-experimental design using one group pre-test and post-tests was used in this study. The sample of this study was the X2 class which consisted of 20 students. The Data were collected from students’ pre-tests and post-tests using a questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using SPSS version 22 for Windows. After submitting the data to a paired sample t-test, it was found that there was a significant difference in the mean score between the pre-test and the post-test, t(df=19) = -11,258 at p=0.000 which meant that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. Thus, technique SQ3R significantly improved the reading ability of tenth-grade students of MA Thohir Yasin. Based on the research findings, the SQ3R technique has been shown to considerably increase students' reading skills, therefore English teachers should incorporate this technique into their reading education.

Abstract

Standardized evaluations are a widely used tool in education and assessment. These evaluations are carefully designed to present uniform questions and instructions to all participants, ensuring consistent measurement of a student’s knowledge or skills in a specific area. They play a crucial role in assessing and enhancing students’ proficiency in the English language. Hence The purpose of this study is to examine the washback effect of standardized testing in the English language subject. The researcher employed a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing a sample of 10 eighth-semester students majoring in English and 3 lecturers at Hamzanwadi University. The sampling technique used was random sampling, while data collection methods included observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings of this study reveal that standardized tests have a significant impact on the teaching and learning process. These tests often create pressure for both students and teachers, which can lead to stress and anxiety during examinations. Additionally, they can inhibit creativity in teaching methods and result in students struggling to understand the material. Consequently, students may become focused solely on passing exams rather than genuinely comprehending the subject matter. Further elaboration on these points is discussed in detail in the following discussion section

Abstract

Teaching English to young learners (TEYL) has been attracting the attention of governments (as policymakers), TEYL practitioners, and students' parents alike. For some, among various issues surrounding TEYL, issues regarding the role of students' first language (L1), language skills to focus on, and when to start to teach English are among the critical issues in TEYL. This qualitative study assesses how academics have measured and conceived teaching English to young learners across 17 empirical studies from global and Indonesian contexts. Its specific goal is to determine what can be drawn from these investigations and what critical issues remain. Results indicate that English to young learners from the global context is divided into two opposing parties (i.e., proponents and opponents of early start). Meanwhile, Indonesian EYL practitioners (i.e., researchers, teachers, schools) and stakeholders (i.e., parents) mostly favor the early start. Yet, current research findings serve to deepen and broaden theoretical understandings of The TEYL and their impact in the particular situation of teaching English to young learners. Future research and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract

This research aims to know the effect of the Clustering Technique on students’ achievement in writing recount texts at the ninth grade of SMPN 5 Masbagik in the school year 2025–2026. The study applied a true experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group. The sample consisted of 60 students selected through simple random sampling, with 30 students in the experimental group and 30 in the control group. The instrument used was a writing test assessed on content, organization, vocabulary, and language use, with proven validity and high reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.936). The experimental group was taught recount text writing using the clustering technique, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, and an independent sample t-test. The results revealed that the experimental group's mean score improved from 56.33 (SD = 6.52) in the pre-test to 71.40 (SD = 7.38) in the post-test, while the control group's mean score increased from 49.87 (SD = 5.20) to 53.40 (SD = 5.78). The independent sample t-test indicated a significant difference between the post-test scores of the two groups (t = 10.513, p < 0.05), confirming that the clustering technique significantly enhanced students' writing achievement. Based on the data analysis, the researcher concluded that clustering is an effective pre-writing strategy to improve the ability to generate and organize ideas, leading to better recount text writing performance.

Abstract

This study explores the perceptions of tutors from the English Student Association (ESA) at Hamzanwadi University regarding their participation in a community service program held from 2022 to 2024. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with purposively selected participants. The study findings indicate that the community service program has had a significant impact on the academic, social, and personal development of prospective tutors. Most tutors considered this activity a valuable experiential learning platform that improved their communication, teaching skills, self-confidence, and leadership. This analysis is supported by experiential learning theory (Kolb, 1984), the concept of service-based learning (Dewey & Freire), and the principles of assistive therapy (Riessman, 1965), which collectively demonstrate that community service not only benefits the community but also fosters meaningful personal growth among participating students. This study recommends continued support and institutionalization of community service programs as part of professional and character development in higher education.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of AI ChatGPT in enhancing writing skills among Indonesian EFL learners at MA NWDI Tembeng Putik. A qualitative case study was conducted with 30 senior high school students using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that students benefited from ChatGPT in three main areas: improving grammar accuracy, strengthening coherence in essay organization, and supporting autonomous revision. Many students also reported that ChatGPT provided useful prompts when they faced difficulties generating ideas, although its impact on writing confidence was more limited. These results suggest that ChatGPT can serve as a valuable supplementary tool for EFL writing instruction, particularly in resource-limited classrooms. However, the study emphasizes the need for teacher guidance to ensure that AI use fosters critical thinking and responsible learning practices.
