Abstract

As an international lingua franca, English plays an important role for students of health for both academic and career success; however, it is often neglected in its planning and implementation. The present study aims at redesigning the teaching of English for midwifery students using an ESP approach by analyzing present situations (PSA), target situations (TSA), and learning situations (LSA) as the basis for designing English programs. The research was conducted at Midwifery Department, Polytechnic of Health (Politeknik Kesehatan henceforth POLTEKES) Mataram, Indonesia involving students, English lecturers, subject specialists, and management. Data were collected using triangulation techniques -- ECSCS Test, questionnaires, interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and documentation – and were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively based on the characteristics of data. The research found that (i) the students’ level of English was still low (84.6% in Basic); (ii) the target needs (necessities) are to be able to communicate both spoken and written in carrying out the duties in workplaces and professional development; (iii) from those results mentioned above, there were conflicts among aspects of needs in designing courses, that is, the high target does not correspond to entry behavior, the number of credits allocated, and facilities. Considering the results of NA, it is suggested that the English programs can be designed using Necessities (TSA)-based Approach, PSA-based Approach, or Mixed Approach with its own advantages and disadvantages

Abstract

This paper discusses about speech levels in Sasak, the language of the indigenious people of the island of Lombok, examining the style, meaning and some historical background of the speech levels. Based on the data, it shows that Sasak, like Javanese and Balinese, also contains low, mid, high and few honorific vocabularies which are assumed to have been borrowed from Javanese (Steven, 1975; Nothofer, 1975). However, the use of the high and honorific variations are scarecly heard in the everyday common Sasaks conversation. In most occurrences, the high speech level is pronounced only among the so called menak Sasaks and its surrounding. Therefore, it rejects the idea that Sasak speech levels is as elaborate and complex as Javanese due to the fact that Sasak has only a few high and honorific vocabularies known by the Sasak aristocracy.

Abstract

As an international language, English has become highly important in supporting Mataram Children Forum (MCF) members' participation in raising children's voices at the national and international levels. However, there is no program that can help to develop their understanding of English skills. This research aims to find out the English levels and English needs of MCF members, the population of which were all members of the MCF while the samples are all the 15 active members with 3 additional samples from facilitators selected through a purposive sampling technique. All data were collected using triangulation techniques, including tests with the CEFR guideline, interviews, and questionnaires. They are then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively based on the data specifications. The research reveals that (i) the members’ level of English was still low (7% at the pre-beginner level, 47% at the beginner level, 33% at the elementary level, and 13% at the intermediate level); (ii) their basic need is to be able to communicate orally in order to participate in the fulfillment of children's rights; (iii) their desire is to be able to communicate and understand English not just for organizational purposes, but also to help them in achieving their future goals; (iv) they tend to have issues in English comprehension, particularly at speaking and listening skills, which limits their level of participation. Therefore, it is recommended that the MCF members make an English learning program that could help meets their needs and function in raising children voice.

Abstract

This study addresses EFL students' challenges at a state university in Mataram, Indonesia, in constructing passive voices in the present and past tense. This study was focused on verb tense changes, subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, and appropriate use of "by" in passive voice constructions. It also aims to explore the causes of these issues and offers insights into potential solutions. With a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were collected using a set of written grammatical tests of passive voices and open interviews. The adopted validated test was completed by thirty students as the participants of this study. The data were analyzed descriptively using an in-depth reading analysis method on the test results and participant responses. The results reveal a need for fundamental grammatical knowledge, limited exposure to passive voice, inadequate practice opportunities, and unclear explanations as contributing factors to the challenges. Language transfer from native languages and a lack of feedback compound the problem. To address these issues, the study recommends basic tense understanding, increased practice, targeted feedback, and exposure to authentic materials to enhance students' proficiency in constructing accurate passive voice sentences.

Abstract

This research examines the effects of group discussions as a teaching method on improving students' basic oral communication skills, focusing on their perceptions, challenges, and outcomes. Conducted with 36 eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Gerung, this study utilized a mixed methods research design. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire, which included both closed-ended and open-ended questions to provide comprehensive insights. The findings reveal that group discussions have a significant positive effect on students’ speaking skills, particularly in vocabulary acquisition, fluency, pronunciation, and comprehension. In addition, group discussions encouraged active participation and engagement. However, challenges such as limited discussion time, nervousness, and unequal participation among students were also identified. Based on these findings, it is recommended that group discussions be integrated more frequently into speaking lessons. Deeper insights may be obtained for future studies by increasing the sample size and incorporating different teaching strategies, like project-based learning or digital tools. In general, this study highlights how group discussions enhance students' oral communication abilities in English classes.
