Abstract

Analisis kemampuan representasi matematis peserta didik masih perlu dilakukan untuk merencanakan perbaikan permbelajaran mengingat masih rendahnya kemampuan representasi matematis peserta didik.

Abstract

Mathematical representation is needed in solving realistic problems, namely as a mediator in solving realistic problems. Abstract

Almost all students understand the limit of a function only up to an intuitive definition and have difficulty understanding the concept of a limit function formally. This study aims to describe the growth of student understanding of functions limit concept in solving controversial problems based on Pirie Kieren's theory. There were twelve Calculus class students in the short semester as participants.   The students selected were those who had taken calculus courses. Students are given the task of solving controversial problems to understand the concept of limit functions. There was only one student who showed a growing understanding of the concept of the limit of a function and was interviewed for further exploration. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. Therefore, the researchers analyzed the results of students' work through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The result shows that through controversial problems, students' understanding grows to an inventising level. However, students did ‘fold back’ at the observing level. At this level, students look at or re-read their notebooks to recall previously owned concepts.   For further research it is suggested that researchers can design a learning process that can help grow student understanding through controversial problems.

Abstract

Social factors, including the persistence of traditional gender roles in the educational environment, often influence the low active participation of students in mathematics group discussions. Differences in communication and collaboration styles between male and female students usually result in unequal contributions in group-based learning. This study aims to examine the communication patterns and mathematical collaboration of students, based on gender, in the context of small-group work in mathematics learning. A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design was used on 17 grade XI students at MA Muhammadiyah Bima City, who were selected purposively. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation, which were then analyzed thematically. The results showed that female students were more active in asking questions, giving suggestions, and building structured cooperation. In contrast, male students were more dominant in explaining concepts and making decisions with a pattern of collaboration that tended to be spontaneous. These findings suggest that social norms, gender, and local culture influence the dynamics of communication and cooperation in the study group. This research underscores the pivotal role of teachers in fostering inclusive and gender-equitable learning environments, as well as in developing collaborative learning strategies that are responsive to diverse roles in group interactions.

Abstract

Students' problem-solving skills remains a challenge because mathematics instruction often emphasizes procedures over creativity and rarely incorporates students' cultural contexts. This study explores the impact of Project-Based Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) on students' creative thinking and problem- solving skill, as well as teacher's perceptions of cultural integration in mathematics instruction. This explanatory sequential design study involved a class of 15 eighth- grade students and a mathematics teacher. Data were collected through observations, project assignments, tests, and questionnaires. The results showed that students' creative thinking indicatorsfluency, flexibility, and originalitywere in the excellent category, while elaboration increased from 79.17 (good) to 87.5 (excellent). Furthermore, there was a significant improvement in students' problem- solving skills, with an average pre-test score of 49.33 increasing to 64.33 (p < 0.05). The teacher responded that project-based CRT helped students develop more effective problem-solving strategies. These findings suggest that project-based CRT can foster students' creative thinking and problem-solving skill in mathematics. Teachers are encouraged to design problem-solving activities that connect mathematical concepts to students' cultural experiences to foster deeper understanding and more equitable learning opportunities
