Abstract

Problem-solving is an activity that can support knowledge construction. Polya, Mason, and Schoenfeld see the problem-solving process as an activity carried out in an individual context. A person's activities cannot be separated from individual interactions. Collaborative Problem-Solving (CPS) is a situation where students must use problem-solving and communication skills in group work to solve a problem. This research examines the stages of collaborative problem-solving in case studies of geometric problem-solving. This research is a case study type with a qualitative approach. The research subjects were class X high school students. The research instruments used were collaborative plane geometry problem-solving questions and interview guidelines. The data collection method was carried out by providing collaborative problem-solving tasks and interviews. The recording was carried out during the assignment using an audio recorder to see the collaborative mathematical problem-solving phase. The research results show that problem-solving starts with discussing, conjecturing, building solutions, communicating reasoning, and extending. The problem-solving phase is cyclical at certain stages, namely discuss – conjecture – build solution – discuss. Meanwhile, critique merges the discussion, conjecture, solution-building, and communication reasoning stages. The finding of the CPS phase in this research is that it has cyclical stages. It combines the critique stages in each CPS phase and can be considered if different CPS phases are documented. Apart from that, it can be a consideration for students that the problem-solving stages in collaboration are more flexible.

Abstract

Math problem-solving skills among students are still lacking. This is demonstrated by kids' inability to comprehend inquiries, offer proper responses, or convey ideas. Low communication ability can also result from instruction that downplays the importance of students' ability to solve problems. This study aimed to determine whether the increase in the mathematical communication skills of students who received problem-based learning models was better than that of conventional learning. Moreover, to find out how students' attitudes toward problem-based learning models. This research method is quasi-experimental, and the research design is a Nonequivalent control group design. The experimental class gets learning with the problem-based learning model, and the control class with conventional learning. The population of this study was all students of class VII SMPN 2 Kota Mojokerto. The samples used were two classes of five selected by purposive sampling technique. To obtain research data, pretest, posttest, and mathematical communication skills were used using the independent sample t-test. Based on the results of data analysis, 1) improving students' mathematical communication ability using problem-based learning models is better than students using conventional learning; 2) students' attitude towards learning mathematics using the problem-based learning model is positive.

Abstract

Representation can be interpreted as a model or alternative form of a problem situation that is used to find a solution. Mathematical representation indicators describe three main aspects of mathematical representation: visual, symbolic, and verbal. Therefore. With the representation process, students have a good opportunity to solve problems so they can solve the problem correctly. This research describes the process of selecting and changing students' mathematical representations in solving HOTS problems. The research approach used is qualitative research. The subjects of this research were six junior high school students who had high (2), medium (2), and low (2) levels of mathematics ability. The data collection techniques chosen by the researchers were tests and interviews. The research results showed that six students used visual representations to solve HOTS questions. Meanwhile, one student with moderate mathematical ability chose to use symbolic representation. This research concludes that low-level students do not change the representations made into other forms of representation. Meanwhile, students in the medium and high ability level categories changed the representation they created into another representation. Students with high-level math skills can create visual representations in several forms.
