Abstract

Sustainable forest management is expected to significantly contribute to preventing climate change and supporting the achievement of the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030. This study aims to determine the potential for biomass storage and carbon and economic valuation in the Arboretum of Forest Area with Special Purpose (KHDTK) Aek Nauli, North Sumatra, Indonesia. This study used systematic sampling with random start as an inventory method. The estimation of above-ground carbon uptake used general allometric equations and benefit transfer methods for the economic value of carbon. This study found 62 species of woody plants with 5 species classified as endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, namely Agathis dammara, Dryobalanops aromatica, Tectona grandis, Pinus merkusii and Saurauia bracteosa. There are 734 individuals of woody plants, including 84% in the tree phase and 16% in the pole phase, with dominant species in both phases, namely Pinus merkusii and Schima wallichii. Potential biomass and carbon stocks in the pole phase were 4.76 tons/ha and 2.24 tons/ha, respectively, while in the tree phase were 338.69 tons/ha and 159.19 tons/ha. The total estimated carbon sequestration reached 592.42 tons.CO2e/ha. Carbon stocks’ total potential economic value is IDR 2,578,832,243 (USD 164,100). Therefore, the Arboretum of KHDTK Aek Nauli is considered to have the potential to support the achievement of the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target. It is expected that the potential economic value of carbon can be converted into real value and optimized through a carbon trading scheme to offset greenhouse gas emissions and support the sustainable management of KHDTK Aek Nauli. Keywords: benefit transfer, biomass, carbon trade, climate change mitigation, economic potential

Abstract

The Gunung Muria forest is one of the important ecosystem value areas in Central Java. This area is relatively well-maintained and in good condition. One strategy for enhancing the protection and preservation of the area is to elevate the status of the forest area's function from that of a protected forest and production forest to that of a nature conservation area within the context of a great forest park. This research is descriptive and exploratory with a qualitative approach. Primary data was obtained from interviews with key people and observations in the field. Secondary data was obtained from literature studies and document studies from related agencies. Data analysis was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method supported by systematic data presentation. The important values of the change in the status of the Mount Muria forest area are 1) protection function, 2)biodiversity, 3) important bird area, and 4) cultural identity. The results show that the Mount Muria forest ecosystem serves as a vital component in the maintenance of the life-support system, acting as a natural barrier for 11 upstream watersheds. The area has high biodiversity and habitat for protected and endangered wildlife. The conversion of the Gunung Muria forest region into a forest park is planned to protect endemic wildlife, specifically the Javan leopard, and their ecology. This change's effectiveness depends on careful planning, community participation, and support from many stakeholders.

Abstract

Sentul Eco Edu Tourism Forest is one of the tourist attractions in Bogor Regency, which was initially jointly managed by the Korea-Indonesia Forest Center and Perum Perhutani. However, the collaboration ended in 2021, so the management was transferred to KPH Bogor. The transfer of authority significantly led to adjustments by the administration since this area was previously affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The adjustment needs to consider how visitors perceive the tourism components in the Sentul Eco Edu Tourism Forest area. Thus, this study analyzes visitor perceptions of the SEETF Area tourist attraction. The method used in determining the sample is the accidental sampling method. It collects data using interviews, questionnaires, field observations, and literature studies. Visitors perceptions of the four components of tourism tend to be quite good. The attraction component gets an index of 82.6%, so it is classified as very good. The amenities and accessibility components belong to the excellent category, with an index of 71.1% and 75.3%, respectively. Then the ancillary services component only got an index of 48.7%, so it was categorized as sufficient. Based on the visitor's perception of the SEETF area, it can be used as a manager for consideration and determining the priority scale in the development of the area that can trigger an increase in visitor satisfaction.

Abstract

Forest Farmer Group (KTH) is a platform which facilitates the establishment of enterprises by communities residing near forests. The KTH Harapan Makmur, situated in Gempolan Village, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, has the capacity to harness both human resources and natural resources. Nevertheless, when it comes to organizational development, it lies short of being ideal. Therefore, it is imperative to offer support linked to enhancing institutional capacity. The objective of this action is to enhance community awareness of growing organizations. A community service event took place in July 2023, attended by representatives from the Gempolan Village Government, forestry extension workers, a community service team from Universitas Sebelas Maret, and members of the KTH Harapan Makmur. The activity was implemented through the organization of a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) primarily aimed at facilitating the compilation of the AD/ART. Attending participants were requested to complete a questionnaire. The activity findings indicate that roughly 40.9% of KTH Harapan Makmur members are employed as farmers, earning a monthly income ranging from less than 1 million rupiah to 3 million rupiah. Following the session, participants' understanding of KTH exhibited a percentage gain in comparison to their level of knowledge before the activity. Thus far, the primary obstacle has been the procurement of capital sources, which remain restricted. Engagement in diverse activities is expected to create possibilities for collaboration and capital acquisition to ensure the long-term viability of KTH's business.
