Abstract

Abstrak This paper studies the Qur'anic Interpretation (Quranic exegesis) of Nurul Huda by Mudhar Tamim (1916-2000). The focus that will be discussed in this paper is a brief history of the study of the Qur'an in Madura, methodological aspects of the interpretation, and critics presented by Mudhar Tamim against some of the socialreligious traditions of the Madurese community. It is by using a hermeneutic approach, the conclusionof this study shows that the Qur'anic Interpretation of Nurul Huda has given a new nuance in the history of the Qur'an studies in Madura. Historically, this interpretation (quranic exegesis) is the first Qur'anic study whose writing uses Latin script, both in the form of translation and interpretation. In terms of methodology, Mudhar Tamim adopted and applied the tahlīlī method. Through this lengthy analytical explanation, emerged the pattern of Islamic jurisprudence ( fiqh) and that of socio-community life. On some occasions, Mudhar Tamim presented constructive critics on the tradition of following something blindly and the practice of tariqah (religious brotherhood in sufism) which was developing at that time. As one of the Quranic interpretations work of a Muslim archipelago, that interpretation is important to be studied because it is able to contribute, at least to the enrichment of literature and discourse about the interpretation of the Qur'an in the archipelago.

Abstract

This article points to review one the Quranic interpretationwritten by Muhammad Irsyad. This interpretation which he called Tapsèr Sorat Yaa-siin (Bha>sa Madhura>) almost disappear in the middle of the Quranic interpretationdiscussions in Indonesia. Basically, there is no much different to other ordinary interpretation, both in terms of writing, presentation of the systematic or the method used. This interpretation was written in Madurese language in the Latin script and typed by the typewriter. As for verses, written by handwriting. The method used in this interpretation is the maud}u>‘i@ surah method, while Surah Yasin as the focus of interpretation. Tapsèr Sorat Yaa-siin (Bha>sa Madhura>) has two nuances (type), those are the scientific and social type. During the interpretation process, Muhammad Irshad utilized the scientific perspective to uncover the scientific Quran and at the same time to respond several mythologies that is still rooted in Madurese society. According to Irsyad’s view, the Quran not only acts as a guide, but also as a source of all knowledge. It is not only sacred, but also scientific. Humans should use their minds to uncover scientific messages contained in the Quran.

Abstract

This article studies local elements being exist in the Madurese translation of Qur’anic Exegesis of Jalālain by Abdul Majid Tamim. By using Gadamer’s hermeneutics, this article argues the local elements in terms of its writing and translation styles as well as its contents are being used in this work. To be seen from its writing style, this work uses Madurese pegon and gandul meaning which reflects the author personality that the author was the keeper of the pesantren tradition. The method of his translation is both literal and interpretative translation. Majid Tamim seemed to be responsive to the social problems that happened in his surrounding. Some of the examples he tauched are the carok local tradition, the use of rice for the fidyah payment, and the importance of keeping the pesantren tradition. These local elements were formed asthe result of Tamim’s dialogues with the cultural, religious and linguistic background as his reference in one hand and his dialogue with the heritage of language, that of religious system and that of social and cultural of the Madurase where he lived on the other. This Qur’anic translation also proves the existence of the ulama of the pesantren in Java and Madura networks which is linked to the Middle East. Abstract

This paper analyzes the interpretation of theological verses in tafsir Firdaws al-Na'im by Thaifur Ali Wafa al-Maduri. The author is a representation of Madurese religious authority because of his capacity as a pesantren cleric, mursyid tarekat, and structural NU figure in Sumenep. The research methods used in writing this article are library research and content analysis. By using critical discourse analysis, the results of this study show that the ideological tendency in Firdaws al-Na'im's interpretation can be seen from his interpretation of sensitive issues such as the theology of ru'yatullah, intercession, absolute will and justice of God. This tendency is due to the author's background as a local activist in Islamic boarding schools and traditional religious education that carries the ideology of Ahlussunnah wa al-Jama'ah. Thaifur Ali Wafa's scientific network that is connected to Middle Eastern scholars also strengthens this reason. This research is significant to portray how the intellectual relationship between Madurese Muslims and Middle Eastern Ulama has played an important role in bringing religious views and interpretations from the Middle East to the archipelago, including Madura.Keywords: Tafsir, Ideology, Thaifur Ali Wafa, Firdaws al-Na'imAbstrak: Tulisan ini menganalisis penafsiran ayat-ayat teologi dalam Firdaws al-Na‘im bi Tawdih Ma‘ani Ayat al-Qur’an al-Karim karya Thaifur Ali Wafa al-Maduri. Penulisnya adalah representasi dari otoritas keulamaan Madura karena kapasitasnya sebagai kiai pesantren, mursyid tarekat, dan tokoh NU Struktural di Sumenep. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penulisan artikel ini adalah library research dan content analysis. Dengan menggunakan analisis wacana kritis, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kecenderungan ideologis dalam tafsir Firdaws al-Na’i>m dapat dilihat dari penafsirannya tentang isu-isu sensitif seperti teologi ru’yatullah, syafaat, kehendak mutlak dan keadilan Tuhan. Kecenderungannya terhadap Teologi Sunni ini disebabkan oleh latar kehidupan penulisnya sebagai aktifis lokal Islam pesantren dan pendidikan agama tradisional yang mengusung ideologi Ahlussunnah wa al-Jama’ah. Jaringan keilmuan Thaifur Ali Wafa yang terhubung dengan Ulama Timur Tengah juga memperkuat alasan tersebut. Penelitian ini signifikan untuk memotret bagaimana hubungan intelektual antara Muslim Madura dan Ulama Timur Tengah telah memainkan peran penting dalam membawa pandangan dan interpretasi keagamaan dari Timur Tengah ke wilayah Nusantara, termasuk Madura.Kata Kunci: Tafsir, Teologi, Thaifur ‘Ali Wafa, Firdaws al-Na‘im

Abstract

This study examines the eschatological interpretations in Tafsir Fayḍ al-Raḥmān by Sholeh Darat, a prominent Javanese mufasir of the 19th century. It delves into the nuances of Sholeh Darat's interpretation of Surah al-Baqarah verses 24-25, exploring its method, sources, and style, particularly in the context of the Javanese cultural milieu. The research employs library research and content analysis methods, incorporating a historical approach to understand Sholeh Darat's interpretations within the socio-political and cultural dynamics of his era. The study reveals that Sholeh Darat's interpretations are a blend of traditional Sunni views and Sufistic insights, which he adapts to the Javanese context, thus making Islamic eschatology more accessible to the local populace. His critiques of Mu’tazilah views and the rationalist movement of his time reflect his role in safeguarding Islamic orthodoxy in Java. The study concludes that Sholeh Darat's eschatological interpretations in Tafsir Fayḍ al-Raḥmān significantly impact both the religious understanding and social practices of Javanese Muslims, strengthening their faith and providing a more relatable and comprehensible view of Islamic eschatology.

Abstract

This paper analyzes KH. Ahmad Bahauddin Nursalim's (Gus Baha') interpretation of Surah an-Naml verses 39-40 about the transfer of the throne of Queen Bilqis to the presence of Prophet Solomon a.s. This research is worth reviewing because there is a rejection of the interpretation by Gus Baha' in the Tafsir Jalālayn by Jalāluddīn al-Mahalli and Jalāluddīn al-Suyuṭi. This analytical descriptive study is derived from online media, namely the interpretation study by Gus Baha' published on the Santri Gayeng YouTube platform, making it a virtual ethnography.\. The author uses Labov and Waletzky's narrative structure analysis approach to explore Gus Baha's five interpretive structures, namely 1) Orientation, 2) Climax, 3) Evaluation, 4) Resolution, and 5) Coda. This study's results show that Gus Baha' rejects Jalaludin al-Suyuṭi's interpretation, which explains that Bilqis' throne emerged from under the chair. According to him, this does not make sense, which is isrāīliyyāt. Despite rejecting this interpretation, Gus Baha' gives his audience freedom regarding their belief in isrāīliyyāt. Gus Baha's rejection of isrāīliyyāt is based on his figure, who is a rationalist. This research also proves that the tradition of the cult of a tafsir essay that is quite phenomenal among pesantren is no longer done. Gus Baha' has succeeded in breaking the habit of pesantren in sacralizing a work of interpretation with his efforts to review the tradition of reading the book. The review was carried out by criticizing, reflecting, and understanding more deeply

Abstract

This article discusses Thaifur Ali Wafa's response to the polemics of Islamic theology in Madura through his monumental work Tafsir Firdaws al-Naʿīm. As a pesantren cleric and structural NU figure, Thaifur represents Madurese clerical authority. In his career, he provides critical responses to Muktazilah thoughts, including such issues as the inability to see God in heaven, God's obligation to do good, and God's promises and threats. This library research uses the content analysis method. Using the sociology of knowledge approach, this study finds that Thaifur Ali Wafa's response to Muktazilah thought reflects the strong influence of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah ideology. This ideology was formed due to Madurese cultural factors and Thaifur Ali Wafa's scientific genealogy. This article is significant in illustrating the network and intellectual relationship between Nusantara Muslims and Middle Eastern scholars, which is crucial in the writing of Islamic scholarly works in the archipelago, including in Madura. It reflects the complexity and diversity of Islamic thought in the region, which is influenced by intercultural interactions and intellectual exchanges that have taken place over centuries.

Abstract

Tafsir Al-Qur’an selalu mencerminkan realitas yang dihadapi oleh penafsirnya. Tulisan ini akan menagaanalisis respon Kiai Maimun Zubair terhadap isu-isu sosial, politik, dan keagamaan di Indonesia melalui Safīnatu Kallā Saya'lamūn. Tafsir ini berasal dari kajian Tafsir al-Jalālayn yang disajikan oleh Kiai Maimun Zubair dalam Bahasa Jawa, kemudian diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Arab oleh muridnya, Lora Ismail Al-Ascholy. KiaiMaimun Zubair tidak hanya dikenal sebagai figur aktif di lingkungan pesantren, tetapi juga memiliki pengalaman luas di ranah politik Indonesia. Oleh karena itu, eksplorasi mendalam terhadap penafsirannya menjadi penting. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif, historis, dan eksplanatoris, dengan penerapan analisis wacana kritis milik Teun A. Van Dijk. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Kiai Maimun Zubair tidak hanya menjadikan tafsir sebagai sarana untuk memahami firman Tuhan dalam Al-Qur’an, tetapi juga sebagai wadah untuk mengekspresikan pandangan dan responsnya terhadap fenomena sosial, politik dan keagamaan di Indonesia. Isu seperti pertanian, demokrasi, kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia, penyebaran dakwah di tanah Jawa, hingga keamanan Negara Indonesia mendapat sorotan darinya. Safīnatu Kallā Saya'lamūntidak hanya menggambarkan situasi sosial, politik dan keagamaan di Indonesia kontemporer, tetapi juga memberikan kontribusi signifikan dalam mendiskusikan persoalan-persoalan tersebut. Sikapnya mencerminkan paradigma pemikiran ulama pesantren yang tegas dalam bersikap dan mengungkapkan keyakinan, sehingga menjadikan pesantren turut berperan aktif dalam proses pembangunan Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper discusses the Qur'anic view on the issue of marriage is scary with the perspective of Ustaz Rifky Ja'far on the Dakwah Sunnah TV YouTube channel. This study, which is processed as a podcast, raises an issue that is being discussed by a number of young people in generation Z, which has the effect of making young people afraid to step into marriage. The purpose of writing this article is to analyse the view of the Qur'an in addressing the issue and examine how the da'wah approach delivered is able to offer relevant solutions to the fears and concerns of today's young generation in marriage. The method used uses digital ethnography and the theory of countering radicalism narratives initiated by Jeffery R. Halverson. Ustaz Rifky Ja'far explained his argument in refuting the issue with two verses in the Qur'an, namely in surah an-Nūr [24]:32 about its virtue, namely that it can bring sustenance to someone who performs marriage, even though they are still not classified as capable, and surah ar-Rūm [30]:21 about its virtue, namely giving peace to those who perform marriage. In this study, three forms of counter-narrative were found in the video delivered by Ustaz Rifky Ja'far, namely figural narrative; analogy narrative; and ideological narrative with two counter-narrative strategies of Ustaz Rifky Ja'far's extremism on the issue of marriage is scary, namely prioritising the qisas verse over the marriage verse and applying it to the realities of marriage.

Abstract

The discourse of eschatology is still an interesting topic among scholars. In Indonesia, the issue of eschatology and the works that discuss it experienced significant development from the 1990s to the early 2000s, especially during the transition from the New Order government era to reformation. One of the important figures in the delivery of a distinctive and unique eschatology is Maimun Zubair through Safinah Kalla Saya'lamun fi Tafsir Shaykhina Maymun. This work originated from the study of Tafsir Al-Jalalayn every Sunday at Pesantren Al-Anwar Sarang which was collected by Ismail al-Ascholy. Its contextual approach and relevance to the contemporary context has made the concept of eschatology easier to understand by the community. This article aims to review the contextualization of the interpretation of eschatological verses in Safinah Kalla Saya'lamun fi Tafsir Shaykhina Maymun. The research method used is library research and content analysis. Using a sociology of knowledge approach, the results of this study show that Maimun Zubair firmly states that eschatology is not only a prediction of the future to come, but has occurred in the midst of the contemporary era. This is an interesting view and different from other interpretations, both from classical, modern, and Nusantara interpretations that still maintain a more literal interpretation. This work is significant for portraying the role of pesantren clerics such as Maimun Zubair in trying to bridge religious understanding with real life, thus providing valuable guidance for Muslim communities in facing changing times. Maimun Zubair also succeeded in bringing together diverse sources of thought, combining intellectuals from the Middle East and Indonesia with harmonious synergy Diskursus eskatologi masih menjadi topik menarik di kalangan para sarjana. Di Indonesia, isu eskatologi dan karya-karya yang membahasnya mengalami perkembangan siginifikan sejak dekade 1990-an hingga awal 2000-an, terutama selama masa transisi dari era pemerintahan Orde Baru menuju reformasi. Salah satu tokoh penting dalam penyampaian eskatologi yang khas dan unik adalah Maimun Zubair melalui tafsir Safinah Kalla Saya‘Lamun fi Tafsir Shaykhina Maymun. Karya ini berawal dari kajian Tafsir Al-Jalalayn setiap hari ahad di Pesantren Al-Anwar Sarang yang dikumpulkan oleh Ismail al-Ascholy. Pendekatannya yang kontekstual dan relevan dengan konteks kontemporer telah membuat konsep eskatologi menjadi lebih mudah dipahami oleh masyarakat. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengulas kontekstualisasi penafsiran ayat-ayat eskatologi dalam tafsir Safinah Kalla Saya‘lamun fi Tafsir Shaykhina Maymun. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah library research dan content analysis. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi pengetahuan, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Maimun Zubair dengan tegas menyatakan bahwa eskatologi tidak hanya merupakan ramalan masa depan yang akan datang, tetapi telah terjadi di tengah-tengah era kontemporer. Ini adalah pandangan yang menarik dan berbeda dengan tafsir lain, baik dari tafsir klasik, modern, maupun Nusantara yang masih menjaga interpretasi yang lebih literal. Karya ini signifikan untuk memotret peran kiai pesantren seperti Maimun Zubair berusaha menjembatani pemahaman agama dengan kehidupan nyata, sehingga memberikan panduan yang berharga bagi masyarakat Muslim dalam menghadapi perubahan zaman. Maimun Zubair juga berhasil menyatukan beragam sumber pemikiran, menggabungkan intelektualitas dari Timur Tengah dan Indonesia dengan sinergi yang harmonis.
