Abstract

Breast cancer cases in Indonesia have risen in alarming rate. Herbal medicines have been developed to complement conventional cancer therapy and to lessen the negative effects of the therapies. Phycocyanin, blue-green photosynthetic pigment from Spirulina platensis, becomes a potential candidate of herbal medicine for cancer therapy due to its capability to eliminate various cancer cell line on in vitro level. This research aimed to analyse the effectivity of phycocyanin to induce cytotoxic and apoptotic activity of T47D cells (breast cancer cell line). MTT assay was perform to measure IC50 value. Double-staining assay and flow cytometry were applied to visualize the appearance of apoptotic cells and to measure the percentage of apoptotic and necrotic cells. Result showed that the IC50 value of phycocyanin towards T47D cells is 1650 ?g/mL. Phycocyanin was also proven to induce apoptosis at IC50 with the apoptosis percentage of 45.93%. This research presented different results from previous researches that used phycocyanin from saltwater Spirulina platensis. Based on the results of this study, phycocyanin has the potential to be developed as anticancer agent by inducing apoptosis.

Abstract

Phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis extract has anticancer activity against various types of cancer cell cultures. However study about its effect on colon cancer cell lines, especially the WiDr, has not been reported before. This study aimed to reveal the anticancer activity of phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis extract on WiDr cells. The research was an in vitro experimental study, with the investigation on cytotoxicity also antiproliferation as the anticancer parameters. Both cytotoxicity and antiproliferation test was conducted through MTT assay to observe the visualization and inhibition of proliferation of different concentrations of phycocyanin in several incubation times on the WiDr colon cancer cell line. The obtained data were then processed statistically with the Two Way ANOVA test at a significance value of p <0.05 and followed with the Post Hoc test since there were significant differences. Based on the results, it could be postulated that phycocyanin extracted from freshwater Spirulina platensis was classified as non-toxic (IC50 of 855 µg/ml). Consequently, it is less potential to be used as the treatment for colon cancer. However, phycocyanin could inhibit the proliferation of the WiDr cell for approximately 47.4%, specifically at the concentration of 1710 µg/ml for 72 hours. It could be concluded that freshwater phycocyanin is less effective as an anticancer substance. The benefit of this study is to provide the new scientific evidence of the contrary results of freshwater phycocyanin activity from Spirulina platensis as an anticancer agent of colon cancer.

Abstract

Food preservation with borax and formaldehyde is still widely practiced. The use of borax and formaldehyde as food preservatives has a negative impact on health. Knowledge and skills to identify borax and formaldehyde content using simple, cheap, and easy techniques need to be trained. A simple technique for testing borax uses the turmeric method, while formaldehyde uses young papaya sap. The public also needs to be given an alternative, safe way of preserving food with chitosan. Participatory methods were used in this activity. The activity stages begin with preparation and socialization, training, monitoring, and evaluation. The activity was attended by 23 people on the first day and 17 people on the second day, including cadres of the FKK, PKK, Karang Taruna, Elderly Forum, LPMK, and culinary UKM. There was a significant increase in the knowledge of training participants with an N gain of 0.58, including the moderate or quite effective category. Participants also responded positively. Participants have the skills to detect borax using the turmeric method and formaldehyde using papaya sap. Training participants are also skilled in using liquid chitosan as a natural food preservative. The conclusion of this activity is that the training participants increased their knowledge about dangerous food preservatives, had the skills to detect borax and formaldehyde in food ingredients with simple technology, and applied liquid chitosan as a natural preservative.

Abstract

Various factors cause stunting in children, one of which is the mother’s malnutrition during pregnancy. Mothers who have Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) and anemia have a high potential of giving birth to children prone to stunting. This community service aims to increase the knowledge of pregnant women and increase the role of the family in preventing CED and anemia in pregnant women in the Sekaran Puskesmas area by developing a class program for pregnant women, making pocketbooks, and supporting educational media. The applied methods were assistance and counseling for pregnant women and parents, education for pregnant women and companions, anthropometry training for cadres and TPK, preparation of e-booklet media for pregnant women, and cooking demos for healthy menus for pregnant women. The results of this activity showed an increase in knowledge based on the pre-test results of pregnant women <80 by 27.3% and scores >80 by 72.7%. After carrying out the posttest, 100% of participants obtained >80 scores. This shows an increase in the incidence of CED and anemia in pregnant women. In the pre-test results for pregnant women’s companions, 10% of the results were obtained with a score of <80 and a score of >80 of 90%. After carrying out the post-test, all participants had >80 scores. Accordingly, Family Empowerment activities for pregnant women with CED and anemia can increase the knowledge of pregnant women and their companions regarding the handling and prevention of CED and anemia. Abstract
